HOME EXTERIOR HOUSE WRAP

Many companies manufacturer types of materials that can be used to wrap a house.

Once the house is framed and the brick/stone drain guard has been installed the house can be wrapped with the thin, water-resistant wrapping material.

FOAM BOARD In addition to and prior to

applying house wrap a rigid foam insulating board may be nailed in place over the exterior of all walls. The house wrap is then installed over the foam board.

ROOF INSULATIONINSULATING THE ROOF

ONCE THE RAFTERS ARE IN PLACE A THIN LAYER OF HOUSE WRAP OR ROOF WRAP MAY BE INSTALLED OVER THE RAFTERS AS A BARRIER TO MOISTURE AND ENERGY LOSS

THE WRAPPING MAY BE INSTALLED DIRECTLY TO THE RAFTERS

TO ADD TO THE STRUCTURE INTEGRITY AND DEPENDING ON THE FINISHED ROOF TYPE YOU MAY CHOOSE TO INSTALL A ROOF DECKING OF PARTICLE BOARD OR PLYWOOD.

ROOF INSULATIONINSULATING THE ROOF

ONCE THE DECKING IS INSTALLED YOU MAY THEN INSTALL THE ROOF WRAPPING OVER THE DECKING.

AS ADDITIONAL PROTECTION YOU MAY OPT TO INSTALL RIGID BOARD FOAM INSULATION ON TOP OF THE ROOF WRAPPING; DEPENDING ON YOUR PARTICULAR APPLICATION

INSULATING THE WALL INTERIOR

ONCE THE HOUSE IS “DRIED IN” AND ALL OF THE WIRING AND HVAC IS COMPLETED IT IS TIME TO ADD THE WALL INSULATION.

WALL INSULATION COMES IN VARIOUS FORMS FROM STANDARD BATT INSULATION TO SPRAY FOAM INSULATION. EACH HAVE THEIR OWN ATTRIBUTES

WHEN WORKING WITH ANY TYPE OF INSULATION YOU SHOULD ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING, EYE GUARD, AND A DUST MASK OF SOME TYPE; ESPECIALLY WITH FIBERGLASS INSULATION

INSULATING THE WALL INTERIOR

BATT INSULATION COMES IN PRESIZED MATERIAL TO FIT THE STUD CENTERS OF YOUR HOME AS WELL AS THE PROPER THICKNESS OF THE WALL ITSELF.

SOME INSULATION COMES WITH A PAPER BACKING WHICH HAS TABS THAT OVERLAP EACH STUD PROVIDING FURTHER SEALING OF THE WALL WHEN FINISHED

INTERIOR WALL WRAP

FINISHING OUT THE INTERIOR INSULATION

ONCE ALL OF THE INSULATION IS INSTALLED ON THE INSIDE OF THE EXTERIOR WALLS (INCLUDING THE GARAGE WALLS) YOU MAY OPT TO ADD FURTHER BARRIER PROTECTION BY INSTALLING 4 OR 6 MM PLASTIC SHEATHING ON THE INSIDE OF THE EXTERIOR WALLS (COVERS THE BATT INSULATION)

INTERIOR WALL WRAPTHIS PROCESS ADDS PROTECTION AGAINST AIR LEAKS THAT COULD NOT BE PROTECTED BY THE EXTERIOR HOUSE WRAP.

CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WHEN THIS MATERIAL IS APPLIED. DEPENDING ON THE AREA IN WHICH YOU LIVE THE EXTRA INTERIOR PLASTIC WRAP USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE EXTERIOR HOUSE WRAP MAY CREATE A MOISTURE CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT IN BETWEEN THE TWO WRAPS. THIS COULD CAUSE THE STUDS TO ROT OVER A PERIOD OF TIME.

CEILING INSULATIONONCE THE INTERIOR SHEATHING

(SHEETROCK, WOOD OR OTHER SHEATHING) HAS BEEN INSTALLED IT IS TIME TO INSULATE THE CEILING.

ONE TYPICAL TYPE OF INSULATION IS BLOWN INSULATION. NORMALLY YOU CAN RENT A MACHINE TO BLOW THE INSULATION THROUGH A LARGE FLEXIBLE HOSE INTO THE ATTIC. IN SOME CASES THE SUPPLIER WILL PROVIDE THE MACHINE WHEN YOU PURCHASE THE INSULATION

CEILING INSULATION

THE OTHER FORM OF INSULATION IS TYPICALLY ROLL/BATT INSULATION. YOU INSTALL IT BY SIMPLY UNROLLING IT BETWEEN THE CEILING JOISTS

ONCE AGAIN MAKE SURE YOU WEAR PROTECTIVE GEAR AND CLOTHING WHEN WORKING WITH ANY INSULATION

CHECKLIST FOR TROUBLE SPOTS

ENERGY HOT SPOTS SHOULD BE CHECKED TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE COMPLETELY SEALED OFF IN POTENTIAL PROBLEM AREA

THIS SKETCH SHOWS VARIOUS AREAS THAT CAN PROVE TO BE TROUBLESOME EVEN IN NEW HOME CONSTRUCTION

THE AREAS SHOULD BE CHECKED IN AN EXISTING HOME TO MAKE SURE UNDESIRED HEAT OR COLD IS NOT COMING THROUGH TO THE HOME INTERIOR.
