CONNECTING YOUR RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECT TO THE GB GRID - A DEVELOPER’S GUIDE

TRAINING FROM THE EXPERTSDNV GL’s Energy Academy provides a wide range of courses for the electricity supply chains, developed in-house and drawing on our extensive expertise - helping you turn our knowledge into your power.

This course is intended to give a core understanding of the process of gaining a connection to the distribution network or onshore transmission network, how the developer can act for optimum outcome and the responsibilities placed upon them during the development of the grid connection. The project lifecycle shall be discussed in terms of technical requirements, project risk, commercial requirements and financial considerations, specific to grid connections for renewable power developments.

Both onshore wind and solar developers will find this course applicable. Two hypothetical projects will be developed from the initial site scoping phase through to commissioning of the grid connection. These examples shall demonstrate the differences between Distribution network connections and Transmission network connections across England, Scotland and Wales.

Course backgroundDNV GL’s electrical group has over 45 combined years of experience of supporting renewable power networks and a further 20 years of combined experience of working within UK electricity Transmission and Distribution Utilities. These electrical services include a wide range of expertise from operating as Banks and Owners Engineer, advising and assisting with grid connection applications, electricity power system engineering analysis, Electricity Supply Quality and Continuity Regulation (ESQCR) site audits, to the regulatory level (grid codes and standards).

Electricity regulatory requirements driven by commercial and technical codes do have a big impact on the connection of renewable energy projects, but are not well understood by many in the industry. This course aims to distil the knowledge gained from years of consulting experience, from a utility companies, developers, lenders or owners point of view, to present the important issues and aspects associated with development of new grid connections. Delegates will leave the course with an enhanced understanding of their responsibilities and industry processes and a reference pack to aid in their future grid connections activity.

Who should attend? This course is primarily focused at developers of Photovoltaic Solar and Onshore Wind projects; however other professionals who wish to benefit from DNV GL’s technical and commercial knowledge of UK grid connections should also attend. DNV GL has assumed that attendees will have a technical background and be familiar with project development, but no specific electrical engineering knowledge is required.
