The mission of Endicott College is to instill in students an understanding of and an appreciation for professional and liberal studies. Deeply woven within this philosophy is the concept of applied learning, which has been the hallmark of Endicott. Linking classroom and off-campus work experi-ence through required internships remains the most distinguishing feature of the College.

Endicott has a vision for the total development of the individual within a community that fosters an appreciation of diversity, international awareness, community service, and moral and ethical values. Endicott is an innovative and vibrant, student-centered institution that supports undergraduate and graduate students in their pursuit of knowledge.

Common threads run through the fabric of the Endicott experience: increased self-confidence, stronger professional skills and technological competencies, and perhaps the most valued of all, lives open to change.

I chose Endicott because it is a comfortable place that al-lowed me to take advantage of everything I was looking for. When I was touring the campus it gave a homey feeling that was easy to transition to. Endicott is also in a great loca-tion, on the beach, and right outside Boston. There are many things around this location that meet everyone’s needs. I chose Endicott because it allows me to balance school, football, and my social life; also the class sizes are smaller which gives you more time to interact with the professors. I chose DIII because I knew I would be able to come in and compete right away for playing time. I also chose DIII be-cause there are no scholarships and everyone that is playing plays for the love of the game and not for the money. DIII allows me to keep playing the game and balance everything else I have going on. – Craig Lussier

Endicott is an amazing place that instantly grew on me. Being that I was a transfer student three years removed from playing my last football game, I was looking for a school that not only had great academics but also had a football team that I could immediately make an impact on. Endicott fit that mold to perfection and added much more. With a beautiful ocean front campus, a proven internship program and a campus over flowing with faculty, coaches, and fellow students who were willing to lend a helping hand, Endicott was a no-brainer for me. From my experience from the past two years I have attended Endicott, I have learned that DIII student-athletes are as passionate for the sports they are playing than any other athlete in the world. We play the sport for all the right reasons. The most rewarding experience about playing with a DIII athlete is, when you step out on the field you know you are surrounded by teammates who are out there with you because they truly love the game. – Oscar Moore

Choosing Endicott was a decision that I made due to the support that I felt I would receive from the school. I knew that when choosing schools I had to do what was best for my academics and secondly for my athletics. Endicott not only showed me that I can receive peer tutoring and that professors are always available to help, but the football program also takes its academics seriously. Along with practice every day we have two study halls a week in order to help student-athletes get their work situated and receive help while doing so. I realize the benefits to DIII football and the benefits of a smaller school. We aren’t being paid, we aren’t on scholarship, we are here playing our respective sports out of pure love for the game. If we didn’t want to be here we wouldn’t. There is nothing stopping us from leaving the team to be full-time students. DIII sports are all about passion, love, and drive. We play the game because we enjoy it and because we want to, not because we have to. – Marcell Cooper

The Endicott College football team won’t be able to rely on experi-ence at the skill positions in the early portion of the season, which

begins tomorrow against Framingham State.

The Gulls don’t have a single returning starter at running back, wide receiver or quarterback.

They do, however, have plenty of guys who are hungry to step up and make an impact.

Senior Ryan McLaughlin and junior Drew Frenette are in the midst of a battle for the starting quarterback job. While McLaughlin has been named tomorrow’s starter against the visiting Rams (1 p.m. in Beverly), head coach J.B. Wells hasn’t decided on who his No. 1 guy is. Frenette was the starter in 2012, but the coach wants to see McLaughlin in a game atmosphere.

“They’re both cut out of same cloth (and) very athletic,” said Wells. “Drew is a little more game savvy because he’s had more opportunities to play. Ryan is more of a physical presence at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, and runs maybe a little better than Drew. They have complementary skill sets, but they also possess some of the same qualities we need in our quarterback. They’re 1 and 1A.”

Endicott also graduated most of its receiving corps, but Wells believes his squad has six talented receivers on the roster. It will be Matt Smith, Nate Lewis and Alec Matys starting when the Gulls go with a three-wide set tomorrow; Smith was the fourth receiver on last year’s depth chart.

The Gulls are looking for a new duo to take handoffs. Tomorrow, look for Spencer Walsh and Andrew Cummings getting the majority of the carries.

“A big part of our offense is that we want to play fast, deep and fresh. So what’s great about this year’s receiving corps is we probably have six guys — and it might even be more than that,” said Wells. “We’ve got question marks (at running back) but we’ll see who can get the hot hand and tilt the rock. We’ve been a two-back system, so we need a couple guys who can go in there and get the job done.”

The Gulls do have one big strength skill-wise back in the fold: senior captain and tight end Greg Dellorco returns after an all-Northeastern Football Conference campaign as a junior. The other Gulls tight end is UMaine transfer Dimitri Skinsacos.

The Gulls’ offensive line should be rock solid as well. Endicott returns three starters including what Wells views as the strength of the line in tackles Alec Gatzogiannis and Mike Marini. Ryan Mrozek and Casey McDonnell provide some strength up the middle.

“If there’s two better tackles in the conference, I don’t know who they are,” Wells said of Gatzogiannis and Marini.

Defensively, there are definitely fewer question marks. The secondary is loaded with returning talent, led by senior captain and safety Jason Silva (2 INTs and fifth on the team in tackles last year with 56). The Gulls also return their top two leading tacklers from last year in senior captain and defensive lineman Marcell Cooper (80 tackles) and defensive end

Andrew Holfinger (76 tackles).

The place where Endicott could be vulnerable is middle linebacker after graduating both of its starters, including Beverly native Peter Kallas. But there’s another Garden City gridder ready to take his place, as senior Nick Kozlowski was the first ILB off the bench a year ago and, after learning from Kallas, Wells expects his new ‘backer to have a strong fall. Mike Maldonado will play next to Kozlowski.

“From what I’ve seen in camp, (Kozlowski’s) poised to have an incred-ible senior year,” said Wells. “I think we’ve got guys who are really capable and learned from the guys who were there before them.”

The Gulls’ biggest strength is its special teams play with returning kicker/punter extraordinaire Dylan Rushe. Wells has long said he believes his kicker is the best in all of Division 3 football and is glad to have him for another season.

“A kid like Dylan gives you the ability to put points on the board ef-fectively,” noted Wells. “He’s strong, accurate and can do all the tricky things with the ball that a special teams coordinator drools over. He’s an excellent punter and I would put him in the top five toughest play-ers on our team.”

“When it comes to first games, you’re going to see a variety of highs and lows. It’s so emotional for everyone,” said Wells. “Anxiety, emotion and excitement all go up, so the team that can play the most consis-tent over four quarters has the best chance to win. I’m not saying don’t get too excited; you just have to level it back out.”

JB Wells

The Endicott football team has only known one head coach since

its varsity season back in 2003. The program, under 11th year head coach JB Wells, has certainly flourished on the field in a limited amount of time thanks to a NEFC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010, back-to-back ECAC North Bowl victories in 2011 and 2012, and an overall record of 62-40 (.608) over ten seasons. Wells, seemingly, takes the most pride in incorporat-ing football into the broader goal of creating a memorable college experience.

“Our job as coaches is to be edu-cators,” says Wells, who enters his

23rd year of coaching collegiate football. “We want to be the best football program, but we also want to make sure that we are develop-ing good students, good athletes, and good people. I want to con-tribute to a player’s education in all areas, not just on the field.”

The results of Wells’ philosophy on football have been astound-ing. Endicott football players have produced 171 NEFC Aca-demic All-Conference winners, four Capital One Academic All-America and All-District honor-

ees, a Hal Chalmers Award Winner (NEFC Scholar-Athlete of the Year), produced countless team community service hours, and served as admissions tour guides amongst other things.

On the field, Wells has helped develop six All-Americans, seven D3Football.com All-Region winners, two ECAC North Players of the Year and eight ECAC North All-Stars, two NEFC Defensive Players of the Year, a NEFC Offensive Player of the Year, three NEFC Rookies of the Year, 78 NEFC All-Divi-sion winners and two standouts that earned undrafted rookie contracts from the NFL.

Endicott’s success can be attributed to a variety of factors including organized and purposeful practice methods, the dedication of Wells’ coordinators and assistant coaches, and a challenging offseason training pro-gram that prepares players for the rigors of a long gridiron season.

“We don’t waste a second of time at prac-tice. Every drill that we do is directly cor-related to something that we have seen on film to prepare us for the next Saturday. Our players are consistently engaged at practice because we don’t spend more than 10 min-utes on a single drill. It keeps things fresh, it keeps the players moving and thinking, and helps our coaches too.”

“The offseason is most important for our on

the field success because if you think about it, there are two weeks of preseason, a 10-week playing season, then 40 weeks of offseason. We are a year-round football program and we expect our players to buy into that. It’s not just strength and conditioning, but our players focus on academics, team building, leadership development, community service, and other things.”

At the end of the day, Wells promotes ac-countability as a core value that all his play-ers should possess in order to create a cohe-sive unit on the field. The results tie into the program’s emphasis on team and leadership development.

“Players in our program understand that their actions affect somebody else. They will naturally be accountable to the coach hold-ing the whistle at practice. We tell our guys that good teams are accountable to their coach, but great teams are accountable to their teammates. The coaches know that if the players embrace this philosophy, then there are going to be some exceptional lead-ers on the team.”

The Gulls are coming off a 9-2 season in 2012 with an ECAC North Bowl Champion-ship over Norwich and have their sights set on a return to the NCAA Tournament with a championship in the newly-restructured NEFC.
