Endemic species An ‘Endemic Species’ is one that is only found in that region and nowhere else in the world. As such they are of conservation concern because they are not widespread and may be confined to only one or two protected areas.

Endemic species are geographically constrained to one particular place on the planet. They often live on islands, though humanity has pushed more than a handful of continent-based animals to an endemic state through hunting and habitat loss. Endemic species are more likely to form in biologically isolated areas such as islands and large bodies of water. Endemic species run a higher risk of extinction because of their geographic isolation

The great spotted kiwi is the national symbol of New Zealand and the largest of the kiwi species.The great spotted kiwi is an unusual flightless bird with tough, leathery skin and feathers like hair.The kiwi is the only bird in the world with external nostrils on the tip of its beak, enabling a highly developed sense of smell.Unlike other kiwi species, the great spotted kiwi has dens instead of burrows within their territory, which are several metres long and have more than one exit
