10 Years

Earned Not Given.

Endeavor celebrates a decade in business and business is good. We’ve been challenged, tested, and have fought for everything we have.

We’ve done things differently, always looking forward.

Now we have built the Archetype Snowboard Lab to transform ideas and innovation into reality, this is the foundation for our future.

10 years have past and 2013 is just the beginning.

Always Endeavor.

Paavo Tikkanen Joins Endeavor

Paavo Tikkanen with a monster backside 180 tail grab at Timberline, Mt. Hood, Oregon, summer of 2003.

When we launched Endeavor, Paavo was still riding pro for another brand. I spent four months in Europe traveling with him, coming up with ideas for graphics, drafting up plans for world domination, but it wasn’t until his team manager saw his name in the Upstarts article as an owner of Endeavor that he finally severed the ties with the other brand.

It was a busy year. We moved out of Chris Martin’s den and into an office across from the Wildcats in Gastown, where we would reside for nine years. Paavo moved to Whistler from Helsinki and began shooting with Scott and filming for the Wildcats movies.

Graphics were flowing in - Randy Ross was inspired by the homeless around our office and designed a graphic to pay homage to them, with the phrase “Artists will Save the World”, which became somewhat of our theme for the year and set the tone for our focus on artists.

In late 2002, our factory called to say we needed to come down and clear all of our raw materials out before the receivers locked it up. We shot down, cleared out everything and routed all of our graphics being printed to a new factory in Quebec. By early 2003, we were in sales mode and pushing through again, hungrier than ever.

Supermodel Snowboard article published in Fashion Magazine featuring the PT/Noot Sear snowboard. Noot is a Vancouver born model, snowboarder, and at the time of this shoot was the face of Chanel. She is now an actress starring in the Twilight saga.

Office photoshoot for our very first publication in the newspaper the Vancouver Sun. The article was about art “going down the hill”.

“It’s about the dream everyone has to start something that is their own - something that you can put your blood, sweat, and tears into.”

The first year was a shit show. I had been testing snowboards for a year, including some blank boards pressed by Jason Broz at Logic Snowboards (you’ll see the relevance of that later) while filming my video part for the Wildcats. Nothing appealed to me, product and brand wise. I heard through some industry contacts about an opportunity to make some snowboards in Oregon. I thought it was cool, so I jumped on it.

Three months later, Rob Dow and I were testing samples on the glacier in Whistler. November 2001, Randy Ross and I were sitting at the print shop watching our first top-sheets and bases come out of the sublimation machine. February 2002, we were posted up in Steve Clare’s hotel room in Las Vegas, meeting accounts and distributors.

Getting orders was exciting, but producing them was a whole different game. The world was changing and snowboard manufacturing was moving overseas. Our core supplier called us and advised if we didn’t come down to make the cores ourselves, we wouldn’t have any for production. Three late nights later with Randy and Scott Serfas, our cores were finished and by early September, our first snowboards were shipping to stores in North America and Japan.

Moving Forward

In 2004 Endeavor started to feel like it was a company. Maybe it was the catalogue shoot that was staged at 2am in the forest with movie lights and generators or the fact there were four people working out of the office now. Whatever it was, we felt like Endeavor was making moves forward.

The faceless corporation Live board by Sean Coggins was a timely hit that translated into a hugely successful campaign. At that time, privately owned snowboard companies were being purchased by large publicly traded corporations and the snowboards lacked excitement. Feedback from shops gave us faith that we were doing something right and we were selling snowboards fast.

Production was on time and the factory was making good boards, but we began looking for better production facilities. Jason Broz from Logic helped us design and manufacture samples of Paavo’s new pro model board with graphics done by Demo Design. The Paavo board won Transworld Snowboarding Magazine’s coveted Top Ten Good Wood award. By production time however, the numbers were too large for Broz to manufacture at Logic, so we contacted Option Snowboards, a brand from Vancouver that both Rob Dow and myself had been sponsored by for many years. They were keen and it marked the fourth factory in three years that we would produce at.

2005

Don’t Worry, Help is on the Way!

2005 felt like we could own the world.

Our factory in Quebec closed down, so we moved our total production to Option Snowboards. This enabled us to access better shapes and materials, not to mention, we could walk over to the factory to check on production. We manufactured the majority of the boards in Vancouver for a while until we moved two series to Elan in Austria, the fifth factory that we worked with.

Paavo was killing it, filming for Whiteout Film’s movie Positron, which Rob Dow was the principle director and editor of. Unfortunately, each season would end early for Paavo with varying injuries.

The Pinnacle

There is no doubt that 2006 was one of our best years. Board sales were pumping, we were traveling on promotional tours and the brand was getting a ridiculous amount of coverage; highlights were Donn Hore was on the cover of Transworld Snowboarding Magazine and the Diamond won Top 10 Good Wood.

We began working with some major artists: Marok from Lodown Magazine fame, local tattoo artist Steve Moore and Nathan Mathews, one of the best designers and all round dudes we’ve met.

It was too good to be true.

Boards started coming back with peeled top-sheets. Our first production was rushed and the ink didn’t cure properly before pressing, creating a weak bond. Option was struggling and this put pressure on the production of our boards. Shortcuts were being taken and we were paying a premium for boards that were falling apart.

It was time for a change.

The Live Series by Marok technical specifications.

To say 2007 was a challenging year was an understatement. Board returns were a logistic nightmare, but most of all it was damaging to our brand. To make matters worse, Option’s prices increased, they employed a new CEO who was trying to salvage the operation and they were taking no responsibility for faulty product. We scheduled a quick trip to GST in Austria and began sampling at our sixth factory in six years. We hit the road in January to sell the shit out of the new line.

Come order time, shit hit the fan. I was traveling in Asia, visiting potential production partners when Option emailed asking for 100% pre-payment. We were exposed, did the math and made a calculated risk that would later prove to save the brand. We moved all models that Option was making to our production partner in Asia, our seventh factory. We still kept some of the boards being made at GST.

The changes had been costly and we had reached a point where we couldn’t continue on. It had been six amazing years but the brand couldn’t continue as it was. Chris went to work for his family business, Paavo moved to California, Rob started a media production company, and Randy began his journey of making a feature film. Scott and I re-grouped and brought on my father in law Bruce Wells to help us set a new plan and get the business operating successfully again.

Laying a New Foundation

2009 really felt like a new beginning. We had been with the same factory for three years, which was unbelievable and we had consistency. We were focused on producing the right product at the right time for the right price.

Working with Rob Dow helped solidify our new foundation. Not only had Rob, Scott and I been long time snowboarding friends but we all managed to be in sync with what we needed to do.

The 2009 collection and catalogue is a reflection of this. What is amazing though is our customers - consumers, retailers, and distributors, believed in what we were doing and had enough faith in the brand to stand by us while we worked through the kinks. Our ambassadors and team stood by us too: Daryl Trinidad, Dez Price - all the homies pushed us forward.

We re-focussed our concentration on bringing Scott and I into the spotlight more, doing press about the company and our journey. The Boyfriend Series won a Good Wood award and our artist roster was stacked again: Derek Hess, Jeff Hamada, Marok, Rory Doyle and Derek Stenning.

Things felt as they should.

The Transition

2008 was pretty much Max Jenke against the world. The crew couldn’t be replaced so I took on everyone’s responsibilities. I was basically sitting in the office on my own for the year. Paul Colby, an Aussie who had worked for Burton Australia, was over on a working holiday visa and he came on as a painter at first, but then helped me on all tasks, ranging from marketing to sales.

It was daunting to say the least but we managed to get through the year, develop a solid plan, and look to the future for the next stage of business.

Our focus was on the product - focusing on snowboards. Nothing else. We placed all production in Asia, which has proven to be invaluable. We began working with Jason Broz again developing new shapes and technologies.

I took on the whole creative design process and worked extensively with artists to develop the entire range.

At the end of 2008, Paul Colby moved back to Australia and I asked Rob Dow to come back and help me work on design and media production.

Allow Us to Re-Introduce Ourselves

31

2

2010 was a year to remember. Not only were we seeing good product sell through at retail, the new line was the best we had ever done. We considered this to be the re-introduction to the brand.

We focused on the product and worked with Mr. Jago from the UK, Hydro 74, and newcomer Vince Chan as well as quietly launching a binding program in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

The 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games were held in February and launched on a high for us. We watched our team rider Johnny Lyall jump through the Olympic Rings at the opening ceremony and welcome the world to Vancouver.

With consistency came new opportunities, we launched in Europe and began engaging distributors in areas that we didn’t have representation.

Johnny Lyall was the most viewed snowboarder in the world when he opened the 2010 Vancouver Olympic games with an indy through the rings.

Let’s Go!

Nine years living the dream; 2011 has been the most exciting.

The year started out with an expanded binding range, the new B.O.D. shape with Dow Tech, and a doubled distributor network. Jason Broz joined our crew to lead research and development and manage our production.

And then the dream got turbo charged. Sales, our team and aspirations were all growing at pace and we had to move out of our office, of nine years, in Gastown into a bigger, creative, 6000sq ft space in Railtown, Vancouver’s design district.

The most exciting though, was the building of the Archetype by Endeavor Snowboards lab, a huge undertaking that will fuse our ideas with wood, glass, graphics, steel and composites and take our brand to the heights that crew dreamed about 10 years ago.

Throughout the hectic pains of growing, falling, rebuilding, moving and evolving the brand one thing has remained the same. Our passion is for snowboarding and making the best snowboards in the world.

I said this quote 10 years ago and it remains the same:

“It’s about the dream everyone has to start something that is their own - something that you can put your blood, sweat, and tears into.”

-Max Jenke, founder and CEO.

Multi Camber

Zero Camber

Reverse Camber

This geometry has a traditional camber between the bindings for Pop and a 3mm rise of reverse camber out to the contact points for a fun, float in soft snow and a hook-free ride.

Endeavor’s Reverse Camber is a subtle concave or arching profile that curves upward. The idea is to reduce the pressure on the contact point of the board and make it feel both looser and more fun to ride.

The best of both worlds. With no pressure on the contact points due to the raised wings, this board feels loose and catch-free like a reverse camber board; however it remains more stable and predictable like a regular camber board.

Super Camber

With 15mm of rise off the snow at the center of the board, this camber profile is a catapult of stored energy just waiting to be unleashed. Found exclusively on the High 5 Series, this camber is recommended for intermediate to advanced level riders who want performance and stability at speed.

Designed to do everything and do everything well; all mountain boards are slightly stiffer for stability at speed and for superior Pop off of jumps.

All Mountain

A symmetrical shape that will help you balance when riding regular or switch. Whether you ride all mountain or park, a twin board will always perform well in all conditions.

Twin ShapeStrategically placed in areas that will both eliminated unwanted high-frequency vibrations that cause your board to chatter on hard snow and also works to increase the bond between the various laminates in a board.

Multi Vibration DampeningLightweight but very durable and torsionally forgiving, ideal for jibbers and park riders wanting a mellow flex.

Biax Glass

This base material is easy to repair and comes with a fast factory wax. Great for printing and requires very little maintenance.

Extruded

With a slightly longer nose than the tail, directional boards are designed for all mountain riding and float in soft snow.

Directional Shape

Designed to sink the tail and raise the nose for effortless float in deep snow conditions, but also to make exiting turns much easier on groomed runs.

Taper Shape

Designed for superior float in soft, deep snow; powder boards feature higher nose and tail kicks and a tapered tail shape.

Powder

Designed for riding in trees, dropping cliffs and hitting booters; backcountry boards are aggressive and stable.

BackCountry

Designed to be stiff enough to be stable, but soft enough to jib; park boards are forgiving and maneuverable, yet they can be aggressive and stable when you need them to be.

Park

Designed for maximum Pop and stability at speed, pipe boards are the perfect blend of an all mountain and a park board.

Pipe

Street

More generous in the waist than a regular board but not as hefty as a wide board, the mid wide eliminates toe and heel drag for those rocking size US 10 to 11 boots.

Mid Wide

Designed for the big boys blessed with big feet. The generous waist width accommodates big boots while providing more stability and fun for the rider.

An eco-alternative, Basalt is a premium aerospace material made from molten basalt and declassified by the military in 1995. An unparalleled strength-to-weight ratio gives our premium freestyle boardsadded performance, elasticity, anddurability.

Completely redesigned for 2013, the Guerilla is the perfect board for the rider who wants the ultimate freestyle board at a price that will leave them with enough cash to buy lift tickets. Take the Guerilla in the park, take it on the groomers, take it in the trees or take it in the pow. The forgiving flex, smooth blend zones and moustache style camber profile makes it one of the most versatile boards in the Endeavor line.

Multi-Cambered TwinThis geometry has a traditional camber between the bindings for Pop and a 3mm rise of reverse camber out to the contact points for a fun, float in soft snow and a hook-free ride. Combined with a symmetrical shape that will help you balance when riding regular or switch, this board will always perform well in all conditions.

If park laps and rails are the rider’s forte, the Color is their board. New stance widths for 2013 allow bigger stances on the shorter boards in the line. The rubber sidewall inlays will protect the board from impact while giving the smoothest ride. This true twin, reverse camber board has become the Endeavor team’s board choice for jibbing.

Engineered Fun.Sizes 145, 148, 151, 154 cm

The first child of the Archetype R&D Lab, the goal was simple: to create a completely new style of board that is stable yet loose, aggressive yet fun and soft yet poppy. Wider than the average deck, this board is designed to be ridden 3-4cm shorter than the typical board and the brand new DT2 technology will make sure that it will never hook an edge.

Technology

Zero Camber w/ DT2 & Flat Kicked Nose and TailDT2 takes the success of DowTech to a new level by adding extra rise and by extending the zones for an even more loose and fun riding zero camber board that is still able to maintain superior edge hold. Because of the quick radius to flat on the nose and tail, the effective edge runs further than a traditional snowboard. This means the rider can drop 2cm in length and still have the same control.

Perfected in the Whistler backcountry and at some of the best heli operations in the world, the Next Series is a freerider’s dream. Taper in the tail allows it to sink slightly, which in turn lifts the nose, making pow riding a breeze. Incredible to look at, the satin finished wood veneer topsheet serves a functional purpose by stiffening the board without adding any additional glass or carbon. Finished off with a sublimated sintered 7500 base for speed and a Phantom wood core for flex memory and Pop and we have the perfect all mountain weapon.
