Trusting in a Better Plan

As we begin our 50th year of helping people experience their worth in Christ, let’s celebrate God’s transformational work in the life of one young boy over the course of one year and 22 days at CCHO.

Caden came to CCHO from a foster home when his increasingly defiant and aggressive behaviors were making it evident that he needed more help for challenges that stemmed from physical, emotional and sexual abuse as well as neglect. Additionally, Caden witnessed violence between his mother and her partner. He also saw his mother buy and use drugs.

When Caden first arrived on campus a little over a year ago, just before Christmas, he was defiant, struggled to trust adults and was unable to develop friendships. He had frequent nightmares and flashbacks. And yet, because he immediately felt safe and loved, Caden adjusted to life here pretty quickly, even with the timing of the holidays.

Over the next eight months, he worked hard to complete his individualized treatment plan and achieve his goals. He effectively engaged in both individual and group therapies. He enjoyed recreational activities and also responded well to art and equine therapy. Caden demonstrated a significant decrease in physical and verbal aggression, opposition toward adults and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. His ability to concentrate and focus substantially increased. He was ready for the next step of his journey but there would be obstacles in his path.

For the majority of Caden’s time with us, the plan was for him to be reunited with his biological mother who drove every other week from out-of-state to visit him. We were making steps for his discharge to take place when his county discontinued the reunification plan. Caden was devastated. The growing season

We are excited to give you a glimpse of what God has been doing through CCHO and our family of ministries, and to invite you to join us in this awesome journey. It’s incredible that we will be commemorating our 50th anniversary this year. Please plan to join us June 8-9 when we will celebrate all that God has done, is doing, and will do at CCHO. See back page for details.

While last year was a season of preparation for us, this year is a season of growth. The soil has been prepared, the seed planted, and now the growing season has begun. According to the Collins English Dictionary, the definition of growing season is the period in each year when the weather and temperature is right for plants and crops to grow.

Our growing season consists of: 1) meeting the acute trauma-based needs of the youth in our CCHO residential program, 2) training and licensing more Encourage foster families, and 3) developing clinicians to meet the needs of our burgeoning Encompass Christian Counseling program.

In the children’s residential center at CCHO, the needs of the youth we serve continue to intensify. We need your help to provide a safe environment where children find healing, discover hope and experience unconditional love. We have opportunities for you to join us as an employee or volunteer.

Encourage Foster Care is intentional with providing encouragement so that every foster parent and youth is successful in the purpose to which God is calling them. While we’re currently training and licensing nearly 20 new foster families, we need more families willing to open their hearts and homes. Maybe you can’t foster but would like to help: we need volunteers and mentors as well.

Encompass Christian Counseling, which includes Thrive Trauma Recovery and One Heart Stables Equine Therapy, offers comprehensive services designed to wrap individuals and families with hope and support. We need even more licensed Christian counselors and social workers to meet needs.

The discussion of our growing season is incomplete without mentioning the impact our donors make. Because of your support, we have recently surpassed 1,000 active clients! Your support has been instrumental in the preparation for this growing season, and it is critical during this growing period. Plan to join us in this season of growth.

We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing. (2 Thessalonians 1:3, NIV)

Many thanks to our corporate donorsfor their generosity to the Promise Project

We are grateful for your support of our building and improvement plan. Thank you to the many individuals, churches, foundations and businesses who have already made a gift or pledge toward The Promise Project. You are bringing hope, healing and unconditional love to the next generation.

The Children’s Leadership & Recreation Center is closer to becoming a reality. The kids recently started enjoying home-cooked meals prepared in the Leadership Center’s new commercial kitchen and are attending classes in the updated classrooms. The Recreation Center–which will house a middle school-sized gym, two additional group rooms, and boys and girls restrooms–is well underway.

With your help, we can finish strong. You’ll be hearing from us soon as we seek to finalize funding for this amazing facility. View pictures and make a gift at mypromiseproject.org

36-hour training helps prepare you to best care for children and youth in foster care

family, but the placement fell through just three days before his scheduled departure.

This was another loss for Caden, and he was faced with feelings of rejection and abandonment all over again. After a couple weeks of processing this loss, Caden came to the staff and said that he was going to be okay because he realized God must have a better family in store for him.

During this time of waiting, Caden’s biological mother gave birth to his baby sister. He was really upset about not being able to meet her. As Halloween and Thanksgiving came and went, he began feeling more and more hopeless. He was devastated at the thought of spending a second Christmas here. He desired to have a home and be part of a family.

Toward the beginning of December, his county identified another foster home for him. After the second visit with this family, Caden came back thrilled that his potential foster father told him he would officially be his foster dad. To top it all off, the foster family has an infant, which helped fill the void Caden was experiencing from not being with his baby sister.

We invite you to pray for Caden and his new foster family as they adjust to becoming a family of four. Please pray that he feels safe and secure in his new home and has peace with being separated from his biological mom and baby sister. If he isn’t able to return to his mother, we hope that he is adopted, finding his forever family. We also hope that Caden uses the skills he learned at CCHO in his new placement and continues to grow closer to God.

Faith played a big role in Caden’s healing story. He enjoyed reading his Action Bible and listening to Christian music on his mp3 player, using the music as a coping skill. He was always excited when it was his prayer day, and he often included all of his peers and staff in his prayers. Because of your generosity, CCHO was a safe place for Caden to receive treatment and learn about his worth in Christ. Your giving allowed Caden to experience love and support in healthy ways. Thank you for making his transformation possible.

Encourage Foster Care & Adoption

A S e a s o n o f G r o w t h

I am truly honored to serve as president

of the CCHO board. It is incredibly

rewarding to meet with fellow board

members to set the direction of an

organization that does so much to help

kids who have been hurt in the very

environment where they should have

felt the safest: their own homes.

The past fiscal year has been one of change and

growth, in large part through our ongoing Promise

Project campaign. In addition to renovating the five

CCHO cottages, we acquired buildings that will allow

for continued growth of our Encompass Christian

Counseling services. Of course, the Children’s

Leadership & Recreation Center (CLRC) on the CCHO

campus is the most notable change. Containing several

new offices and classrooms, a full foodservice kitchen

and a gym, these facilities will help the children we serve

feel safe and loved by the people around them while

also giving them space to overcome the trauma they’ve

endured. We hope you’ll come see the CLRC for yourself

as we celebrate our 50th anniversary on June 9 at the

Great Grill Off (more details on the back cover)!

Sadly, we have said farewell to board member Lyle

Beveridge. During his 28 years of service, Lyle has greatly

impacted his fellow board members and staff. Thank you,

Lyle, for the foundation you laid and your commitment to

CCHO. I hope we can carry the torch as well as you have.

Staff made changes to several areas of our clinical programming last year to

more clearly define roles in cottages, reduce stress for residents and staff, and

more fully engage kids upon intake while ensuring our treatment model will

benefit each incoming resident. These changes have allowed us to better support

residents while creating new connection and engagement opportunities.

We continue to see growth of all kinds throughout Encompass. In addition to

our new office at One Center for Leadership in Canton, we expanded services

to include school-based partnerships with the Tuslaw and Triway districts. Last

summer, we completed 1,000 counseling sessions in one month for the first

time, and we continue seeing intensive trauma clients in Thrive Trauma Recovery.

We were thrilled to add 10 new families to our foster care network last year, with even more in process, growth that has allowed us to add to

our staff as well. We’ve continued expanding into neighboring communities and churches, and we are seeing wonderful development and rich

connections with our new mentor program, A Friend in Fostering. While not everyone can take in a foster youth, everyone can help or volunteer.

Incredible Support

Incredible Volunteers

Our new trauma-focused therapy model, Natural Lifemanship,

opens doors to emotional healing for our clients. Within two years,

all One Heart Stables therapists will obtain the Natural Lifemanship

certification. We’ve also been blessed by volunteers who painted,

did extensive concrete work and added fencing to our grounds.

It has been a year of growth for Peru-based Esperanza de Ana, a

CCHO affiliate organization since 2013. The addition of key staff

members has increased our ability to proclaim God’s faithfulness

and access important national resources. We’ve also improved

training and support for our resident caregivers and teaching staff.

More than 1,100 donations were made last year in support of

CCHO’s family of ministries, including pledges and contributions to

the Promise Project. This unbelievable generosity makes it possible

for us to continue helping people experience their worth in Christ!

Totals do not include $254,333 of donations to Esperanza de Ana, nor $210,913 of in-kind donations

Promise Project totals reflect new gifts & pledges received from 7/1/17 – 6/30/18

Hundreds of people give their time and share their talents with

CCHO each year. From event assistance and construction projects

to Christmas gift wrapping, your volunteer help is vital and so

greatly appreciated. To those who volunteer: THANK YOU!

Our youth group calls it “Holiday Smiles”—a tradition that starts every June at VBS. It teaches our children to help others and give what they can and when they can. As a bonus, many of our congregation enjoy reading the thank you cards we receive and display. It adds a personal connection with the children.

-Beth Magill, Bridge Street Church of Christ, Wish List donors for 19 years

I was initially introduced to CCHO through a friend who had fostered boys from the home and I wanted to help in some small way. Participating in the program blesses the donors just as much as the children on Christmas morning. It brings Christmas into perspective.

You learned about Mia in our Christmas appeal letter. She regulary bounced between homes because of abuse and neglect. The good news is that she is now here on our campus receiving care. And even though Mia’s young life has had much trauma, she is still a bright and bubbly little girl.

She does well in school (all As and Bs on her recent report card), enjoys playing Skip Bo and loves horses. Her two favorite colors are pink and blue although she loves them all. She is motivated to display good behavior, and she is trying to keep her status level at a “3” so she can earn the special queen bedroom suite in her cottage.

Mia is a very precious child bravely working through her up-and-down emotions and experiences. She is participating in one-on-one and group therapy including art therapy and equine therapy. She is learning to trust the staff and navigating friendships with peers. Mia is also realizing that she has coping skills at her disposal and is learning the value of utilizing them.

Would you pray with us that Mia would discover her worth in Christ during her time at CCHO? Please pray that our staff would have wisdom to help instill in her that she is valuable and loved as well as guidance for her future placement. Her heart’s desire is to go home. Your prayers mean so much to each child’s healing journey.

With the generosity of donors in our Christmas Wish List program, we distributed 1,100 gifts to 131 children in our residential center and counseling program. Through this gift ministry, you are helping young lives experience their worth in Christ. Thank you!

wishes accomplished

I’ve been blessed by the giving spirit within our church (James 1:24). It’s exciting to cross off wish list items when I’m shopping and then be able to do more because of their generosity. One person gave money this year because CCHO applies biblical truths in connecting with kids.

-Carol Wilson, First Christian Church of Sandusky, Wish List donors for 10 years

It’s a very tangible way for our children to understand how and why we take care of others. We are all children of God and though we may never meet those we sponsor, we provide for them as we do our own family.

-The Raines Family, Wish List donors for three years

Dear Wish List Donor,Thank you for all of the gifts that I received on Christmas. You may not know it but I’ve never had a Christmas before. This was the best one by far.-CCHO Resident, Christmas 2018
