Design and create your own vision of a town, neighborhood, village, cityscape or skyline: detect common visual elements, highlight details, create building blocks and put them all together using improvisational piecing techniques. Add character to your town by experimenting with different surface design techniques (add texture, discharge color, incorporate 3D elements). Consider creating an irregularly shaped piece and finish off your work with an elegant facing technique.

Susan Brubaker KnappWholecloth Painting and Thread Sketching

Start with white fabric and paint, and work from your original photographs. You’ll learn how to trace elements from your photo and transfer your lines to fabric, then how to mix acrylic textile paint colors and create shades and tints for highlights and shadows. After painting your design on fabric, you’ll learn how to add details, texture and more color to enhance your piece with thread sketching (thread work done on the surface, before quilting). These techniques will open your eyes to a whole new world of possibilities for your art quilting. kit fee: $45.00

Julia Scheffelin GravesAmazing Abstracts

Create an abstract quilt that has amazing movement and drama, using the techniques pioneered by Ursula Kern. Go from inspiration to a simple sketch, then have fun “coloring” your sketch with bits of fabric to create a mock-up of your design – see before you sew! The design is gridded and blocks are foundation pieced using an easy sew and flip method with room for creativity and improvisation. Lots of discussion of design principles and how to use color and value to create the drama and desired effects.

Velda NewmanLayers: Color, Shape, Texture & Form

Throw all the rules of stringent design out the window. First we will explore machine stitching techniques for texture and shape. Next will be the basic lessons for how to use acrylic paints on fabric to get “color, shading and form” into a piece. We will be using other mediums such as resist, pencils and Copic inks for detail work. Bring magazine photos of simple, defined shapes, such as flowers, fish, fruit, veggies, birds; these ideas work best for the class. Stuck for ideas? I will bring some design sheets you may purchase for $8.00 each. lab fee: $35.00

Pearl P. Pereira One if by land, Two if by sea!

“If the British march by land or sea from the town tonight, Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch of the North Church tower as a signal light,- One if by land, and two if by sea.” These famous words (penned by Henry Wadsworth after Paul Revere’s renowned ride) became the inspiration for this original patriotic block. Learn Pearl’s “Off-The-Block” applique techniques for prepared edge applique. Learn how to make “Perfect Bias Stems”, reverse appliqué, sharp points, and perfect circles, smooth concave and convex shapes. lab fee: $15.00

Maxine RosenthalOne Block Wonders with a Panel

A panel is a picture on fabric. It provides an easy way to make a quilt, add a border or a little interest on the sides and you are done. But. . . what would happen if you had 6 extra repeats of the panel and cut those into kaleidoscopes and surrounded the panel with all the colors from within the panel? The panel then morphs from a picture to an abstract kaleidoscopic arrangement of color and design. The panel is then surrounded by itself in a multitude of different designs. It is suddenly more than just a picture.

Jane SassamanDomestic Bliss:

Abstract Appliqué Still Life

We will begin this workshop by looking at examples of abstract still lives by several 20th century artists. Then we will simplify our subjects by cutting paper shapes to play with perspective, light and shadow and composition. Then we will transform our paper pictures into fabric appliqué. There is lots of room for fun and exaggerated interpretations of what we see. Sewing machine needed (at least a few decorative stitches)

Louisa L. SmithCreating with Curves and Circles

This is a design class for the beginner and/or the advanced quilter. You will have the chance to design a Double Vision quilt by simply layering shapes and color for richly complex designs. Or, if you prefer, create two simple quilts and fracture them to become a one-of-a-kind piece. Louisa calls this procedure “Fractured Quilts;” it is easy and fun, resulting in curvy and colorful pieces of art. At the start of the class there will be a discussion on the construction of both procedures.
