Who is the third who walks always beside you?

When I count, there are only you and I together

But when I look ahead up the white road

There is always another one walking beside you.

TS Eliot, The Wasteland

Our name comes from one of the most beautiful stories in the bible:

‘Two of them were going to a village called Emmaus… Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognising him.’

Jesus disguises himself in normality, joining us on our journey through life, entering conversations, sharing our meals and gently revealing his love.

Those two commuters finally realised that Jesus was with them when he broke bread in their home. It’s often as we show hospitality, share time together, and especially as we take communion on the last Sunday of each month, that we recognise Jesus Christ, alive and active in our midst.

‘He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognised him.’

If you’re new and would like one of Pete’s books, Red Moon Rising or God on Mute, we’d love to give you a free copy. Just ask at reception.

WELCOME

Pete and Sammy Greig

We’re glad that you’re here with us at Emmaus today.

A century ago these electricity works began supplying power to most of Guildford and today we gather here to plug into God’s life-changing power so that we can take His light and life to our city.

Our teaching series this term explores the theme of God’s Alternative Power, preparing us for Easter, the happiest date of the year. We’re also running the Alpha course this term for those wondering about Christianity, a Burn’s Night party for everyone and a Welcome Party for those who are new to Emmaus.

Make yourselves at home.

Pete Greig leads Emmaus, and serves as Director of Prayer

for Alpha Int. He’s also a bewildered founder of 24-7 Prayer - launched here in Guildford. It has reached more than 2 million people in more than 10,000 prayer rooms and more than 100 nations.

Darrell Tunningley is a former drug dealer and armed robber.

While serving five and a half years in prison Darrell attended an Alpha Course which changed his life. His amazing story has been featured on TV, in the Daily Mail and in his best-selling autobiography Unreachable.

Lisa Repko Borden has lived amongst the Maasai in

Kenya’s wilderness, amongst hippies and surfers in Portugal and in Tanzania where she now runs an NGO called WEMA with her husband Byron. She is the mother of four grown children and the author of Approaching God.

Hannah McVeigh works for 24-7 Prayer running The

Vision Course (UK) which is based here at Emmaus. Originally from Northern Ireland, she studied Theology at St Andrews in Scotland under the famous scholar and former bishop NT Wright and others.

Mike Andrea became a Christian after fleeing

to Cyprus to escape from a death threat. Today he leads Global Generation in Ramsgate, one of the most innovative churches in the area. He helps to lead Spring Harvest, The Big Church Day Out and 24-7 Prayer.

Jens Mankel is a skilled furniture maker, worship

leader and pastor who ran one of the largest churches in Frankfurt, Germany. Last year he and his wife Coralie toured Europe in a van with their six children, arriving in Guildford to be part of Emmaus and the 24-7 Prayer movement.

Julia Thomas is a former doctor who serves on the Board of Justice and Care, an anti-

trafficking organisation, and is a trustee for Emmaus Rd. She and James often host Emmaus events at their home just outside Guildford.

Jon Petersen grew up in Japan, went to university in California, raised his family

in the Red Light District of Amsterdam, and today lives in the Rocky Mountains. Jon is a much-loved godfather to the 24-7 movement.

Dave Slinn is one of the leaders of Emmaus Rd and Director of Matrix Trust,

the local youth charity which won the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. Dave is a petrol-head with a particular love for land-rovers.

Bill Cahusac is a former school teacher and self-confessed film geek, who serves

as a curate at HTB in London running the 24-7 Prayer Room which has been going non-stop in term times, for more than a year.

Jonny Hughes heads up the student work at HTB in London with his wife Amy.

He is a gifted speaker and thinker who formerly served as a teaching pastor and prayer leader at RockHarbour church in Orange County, California.

SundaysAs well as worshipping together with the whole church community, we run a range of streams for kids and young people. We even run a Creche for all ages up to 5yrs so that you can sit back, relax and enjoy the meeting.

Older Youth - Tuesdays 7.30-9pm 60 Sydenham Rd, Guildford, GU1 3RX (School Years 10+)We spend a couple of hours at Matt's house with our older youth hanging out, eating loads of cake and studying the bible together!

Cooking Chaos - Thursdays, 4.30-6pm @ Emmaus Rd Centre (School Years 4-6)A fun (but hectic) couple of hours at the Emmaus Rd Centre preparing and eating food together, playing games and having a look at the bible.

Younger Youth Group - Fridays, 7-9pm @ Emmaus Rd Centre (School Years 7-9) Our popular youth club includes loads of fun games and a chat about being a Christian. We also have Xbox, table football and a tuck shop!

MentoringJourneys are easier (and more fun) with someone else. A young person's journey of faith is really important and we want to support them as much as possible in it, so we've started to pair our older youth up with a mentor - someone who is a little bit further on in their journey of life and faith. The idea is simply to have someone to chat to, hang out with and support them. If you'd like to get involved in mentoring or would like a mentor, we'd love to hear from you!

YOUTH

The safety of children is paramount. All Emmaus Youth Workers are fully DBS checked and subscribe to a thorough Safeguarding Policy.

For more info on any of these things or our less regular one off events, contact Matt Davis ([email protected] or 07846 666459) or check out:

COLLECTIVESAs well as gathering on Sundays, we meet in smaller groups at other times in order to build friendships, grow in our faith and reach out to friends who don’t yet know Jesus. To find the right collective for you, talk to someone at the reception desk or email: [email protected]

Collective: (adj). A grouping of individuals working together co-operatively towards a common goal.

Having worked as a social worker in Surrey for the last 7 years, I’ve seen a different side of Guildford. Families struggling to make ends meet feel isolated, under a tremendous amount of stress, and unfortunately end up breaking down on a regular basis. We have one of the highest divorce rates in the country.

Family Outreach is a resource that aims to support vulnerable families through friendship, practical support and activities.

We dig gardens, run lots of events and provide school holiday hampers loaded with food, goodies and vouchers to help keep children fed and entertained through the school holidays.

By linking with other organisations we can offer a further menu of support including Christians Against Poverty (CAP), Guildford Pregnancy Choices and Ready for Action. We also provide a number of courses ourselves including the Marriage Course, Marriage Preparation, Parenting and Money Management.

If you would like to get involved or would like to know more about Family Outreach please let me know.

Liz Slinn.

GLOBAL OUTREACHEmmaus Rd is part of the Boiler Room Network, a global family of communities linked to the 24-7 Prayer movement all committed to prayer, mission and justice. As a training hub for 24-7 Prayer, we host The Vision Course and send short and long-term mission teams all over the world.

We also support global mission partners around the world such as Phil and Anna Evans in Macedonia, Beth A in North Africa and David and Joy James working in Tower Hamlets, London.

Through James and Julia Thomas we also offer prayer support to Justice and Care, an NGO which rescues and rehabilitates victims of trafficking.

We also support 24-7’s ground-breaking work in Ibiza.

So, get on board and we will help you find your place in God’s big plan for the world, both here, in Guildford and beyond!

24-7 PRAYER ASIA

Page 14: Emmaus spring 2014 dl [web]

From September and again from February for 5 months each year, in conjunction with 24-7prayer.com, we run a life-changing experience of radical discipleship, personal growth and 24-7 prayer.

‘The Vision Course’ will help you lay foundations of biblical knowledge, cross-cultural mission, character development and, of course, prayer for the rest of your life.

During these months you will LIVE with us or with our sister boiler room in Kansas City in the USA, LEARN about who God is and who you are in His eyes (journeying through the entire bible), and LOVE the world in practical ways including on a 6 week mission adventure. Its spiritual formation, biblical education and social transformation all rolled into one amazing course.

Its called The Vision Course after Pete Greig’s Vision poem, a radical call to discipleship written on the wall of the first 24-7 prayer room, which went on to galvanize millions of disciples around the world. If your vision is to change the world, The Vision Course will change your life.

TWENTIES + Being a twenty-something is an exciting and wild journey of transition and dicovery. It's a decade that throws up questions about identity, strengths, calling, service, sacrifice, relationships, work/life balance and finance. At Emmaus, we want to help you find answers to some of those questions as you participate and serve in the life of the church, continue to grow and mature in your faith and seek to change the world!

Keep an eye out for notices about 20's lunches after church and targeted seminars. Find us on Facebook by searching for 'EmmRd 20s/30s' from the emmaus rd facebook page

We not only believe that prayer works, but that it’s a living conversation with a loving God.

Emmaus Rd began with a heart for prayer and worship. As we continue to grow and experience more of God, we are committed to keeping prayer as a central focus.

To find out more about the 24-7 Prayer movement, get your free copy of Red Moon Rising from the reception desk. You’ll find plenty of stories about Guildford and people you will meet at Emmaus and it will help you understand our vision as well as getting you excited about the power of prayer.
