Who is the third who walks always beside you?

When I count, there are only you and I together

But when I look ahead up the white road

There is always another one walking beside you.

TS Eliot, The Wasteland

Our name comes from one of the most beautiful stories in the bible:

‘Two of them were going to a village called Emmaus… Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognising him.’

Jesus disguises himself in normality, joining us on our journey through life and gently revealing his love.

Those two commuters finally realised that Jesus was with them when he broke bread in their home. It’s often as we show hospitality, share time together, and especially as we take communion on the last Sunday of each month, that we recognise Jesus Christ, alive and active in our midst.

‘He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognised him.’

Luke 24:13-16

HAPP Y NEW YEAR

Pete and Sammy Greig

Welcome to Emmaus at the start of this exciting New Year.

This term we’re launching a new service to accommodate all our recent growth, so you can now join us in worship at the Electric Theatre at either 9.30am or 11.30am every Sunday. It’ll be strange go from being packed to the rafters, to being half full again, but it won’t last for long. It wasn’t long ago that we were meeting in a local pub!

This term we’ll be praying 24-7, running Alpha and throwing our popular, annual Burns Night Party. We’re launching a new teaching series called Love:15 – a reference to the year 2015 but also to the 15th chapter of John which we’ll be studying together. God’s heart is to give us ‘success’, ‘breakthrough’, ‘joy’, ‘friendships’ and ‘purpose’ in 2015.

We’ll also journey through Lent towards Easter using the gospel narrative (of course) and also a movie called “The Way” starring Martin Sheen.

We’re thrilled that you’re here. If it’s your first time do fill in the “Get Connected” card at the back of this guide and come and say ‘Hi’.

Make yourselves at home

Emmaus Rd began with a heart for prayer and worship and as we continue to grow and experience more of God, we are committed to a regular heartbeat of interaction and adoration.

To find out more about the 24-7 Prayer movement, get your free copy of Red Moon Rising from the information table. You’ll find plenty of stories about Guildford and people you will meet at Emmaus and it will help you understand our vision as well as getting you excited about the power of prayer.

Emmaus Rd is part of the Boiler Room Network – a global family of churches and communities associated with the 24-7 Prayer movement and committed to a lifestyle of Prayer, Mission & Justice. www.24-7prayer.com

Pete Greig leads the ER team, writes the occasional book and serves as Director of Prayer for Alpha. Married to Sammy

he is also a bewildered founder of 24-7 Prayer which was launched here in Guildford and has spread into more than half the nations on earth.

Roger Ellis is an author, church planter and fish farmer. He, along with his wife Maggie, founded Revelation Church in

Chichester, which hosted the very first 24-7 Prayer Room as well as pioneering the student movement Fusion. Roger now heads up the 24-7 Academy, training young leaders around the world.

Naomi Trenier’s story is about grace and freedom from an oppressive cult. Naomi is married to Steve – an outdoor

pursuits instructor – and they have a passion for adoption. She works for Alpha International and regularly speaks on the Alpha course at HTB.

Adam Heather does very clever media things for the global 24-7 movement, like helping make award-

winning videos and writing articles. He also helps lead the Bushy Hill collective for ER. He is a graduate of both Southampton University and Bethel church in Redding, California.

Mick Brooks and his wife Lynn are members of ER. A former psychiatric nurse, he studied theology in USA, was

Dean of students at a College in the West Indies and is the CEO of CWR which trains hundreds of Christian counsellors at nearby Waverley Abbey.

Hannah McVeigh heads up The Vision Course for 24-7 Prayer based here at ER. Originally from Northern Ireland, she

studied Theology at St Andrews in Scotland under the famous scholar and former Bishop NT Wright and others. She is a brilliant bible teacher.

Jon Peterson grew up in Japan, raised his three children in Amsterdam, and now lives high in the Rocky Mountains,

USA with his wife Mindy. After 30 years of helping to plant simple churches on three continents, he now traverses many nations encouraging 24-7 communities and mobilizing cities in united prayer, unity and strategy.

Julia Thomas is a former doctor and a co-founder of Justice and Care, an anti-trafficking organisation. She is

also a Trustee for Emmaus Rd. Julia and her husband, James regularly host Emmaus events at their home just outside Guildford. Julia loves riding, sailing and triathlon and has three children, Imi, George and Josh.

S PEAKER B IOS

Bill Cahusac is a former school teacher and self-confessed film geek. Married to Nici and father to three boys

he is a curate and prayer chaplain at HTB where he oversees the Furnace Community and a 24-7 prayer room which runs non-stop in term time.

Mike Andrea became a Christian after fleeing to Cyprus to escape from a death threat. Today he leads Global

Generation in Ramsgate, one of the most innovative churches in the area. He helps to lead Spring Harvest, The Big Church Day Out and 24-7 Prayer.

We want to help students find friendship and family, so that they can take a stand and change the world. They aren’t on the fringe of Emmaus – they are right at the

heart and we love the fact that they have been sent here by God to make a difference in such a massive, exciting, mission field.

All in all we promise that life won’t be boring or lonely!

There can be a misconception that Guildford is just a wealthy, successful city with few problems, especially related to poverty. However having worked as a Social Worker for the past 8 years I've seen a different side. Families struggling to make ends meet, feeling isolated, under huge amounts of pressure, and tragically breaking down as a result.

Emmaus Rd have been working to reach out and support families before they reach crisis point.

Family Outreach is a resource to the families of Guildford through friendship, practical support and activities. We provide holiday hampers for a number of families throughout Guildford. As well as food and toys these include vouchers for the cinema and leisure centre, and activities and treats to keep the children entertained and support parents throughout the school holidays.

The majority of our referrals come from home school link workers at local primary schools and nurseries, but if you know anyone who you feel would benefit from our support please let us know.

From home visits to practical help to hampers our aim is to make a difference, therefore we are always thrilled to hear if our support has made a difference:-

Following a family tragedy, we paid for a family to go to London Zoo for the day.

"I can't even start to tell you how much we appreciate it.... It means the world to be able to take my son out with all the family'. We've gone through so much and your help and kindness means the world to us we honestly can't thank you enough".

We were able to help a teenage girl buy a laptop. She had been through a very difficult year, including her family being burgled.

''despite all my daughter has gone through this year she managed to get brilliant results in her GCSEs, thanks for all your support"

After delivering a hamper to one of our families.

"Thank you for our hamper, it was so kind of you and I felt really peaceful after you prayed for me".

FA M I LY OUTREACH

Liz Slinn

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?We need more volunteers who we can call on to do odd jobs, befriend families, visit prisoners, deliver hampers or help on courses.

If that's you then please speak to me, Mike, Katie or Beth.

The Marriage CourseA 7 session course held at Allen House. Each week you will be served with a meal at a table for two while listening to practical, informative and fun talks and working through exercises together with enough space for privacy!

There is never any group work and you will never be asked to share anything about your relationship with anyone other than your partner.

This course is not necessarily aimed at couples going through difficulties, but at anyone at any time who wants to strengthen their marriage.

Emmaus Rd runs other courses and also links with outside organisations in order to give a wide range of support to people. These courses and organisations include, Christians Against Poverty (CAP), Ready for Action, the Marriage Preparation Course and the Marriage Course

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a national charity, working across the UK to lift people out

of debt and poverty. Mike Stanbrook and Dave Markley run our CAP course at Emmaus Rd. This is a revolutionary money management course that teaches people budgeting skills and a simple, cash-based system that really works. This course can help anyone to get more in control of their finances in order to budget, save and prevent debt.

For more information visit www.capuk.org or if you are interested in getting involved with CAP contact Mike - [email protected]

C O U RSES AND FURTHER SUPPORT

Ready 4 Action is a community action project run by the Matrix Trust,

started in 2000 to encourage young people to help out in their communities by doing practical jobs like gardening, decorating, removing rubbish, demolishing sheds (only unwanted ones though!) and ultimately demonstrating God's love in real, practical ways.

For more information visit www.matrixtrust.com or contact Dave Slinn - [email protected]

Marriage PreparationThis is a 6 session course. It is generally run in people's homes, ideally on consecutive weeks however, we can be flexible.
