WORRIED?

Page 2: Emmanuel Centreemmanuelcentre.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/pp …  · Web viewThe world of today is very demanding. Life seems to be so fast and sometimes things seem to spin

Last year, you may remember, Emmanuel Centre took on the motto of LSD. Not the tablet kind. It means LESS STRESS DAY 2016. It actually worked. This year it will be LLSD 2017– LESS LESS STRESS DAY 2017. How does it work? The world of today is very demanding. Life seems to be so fast and sometimes things seem to spin out of control. How we handle what is happening in the world according to what media is reporting can be overwhelming sometimes or most of the time. It is a natural thing to find oneself stressed and worried about self and others. Daily stress can mess with your mind and body in serious ways.

THE DOWNSIDE OF WORRY.Many times stress can encourage a person to do something about the source of the stress. That is good. Many times stress can discourage a person from doing the daily jobs that need doing. That is not so good. Worrying can be helpful when it spurs you to take action and solve a problem. However, if you are preoccupied with “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios, worry becomes a problem. Unrelenting doubts and fears can be paralyzing. They can sap your emotional energy, upset your digestion, shrink your ability to remember things, slow your metabolism, which means your body burns less fat and so it stays on, send your anxiety levels soaring, and interferes with your daily life (to mention a few). However, chronic worrying is a mental habit that can be broken. You can train your brain to stay calm and look at life from a more positive perspective.

If you are alive, you will experience stress. We will all have throughout the day situations, which can lead us to worry. If we take on LLSD those situations do not have to cause us to be constantly worried. Some years ago, I came across the idea of a “Worry Box”. How does it work?

1. Create a "worry period.” Choose a set time and place for worrying. It should be the same every day (e.g. in the living room from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m.) and early enough that it will not make you anxious right before bedtime. During your worry period, you are allowed to worry about whatever worry you put in the box. The rest of the day, however, is a worry-free zone.

2. Postpone your worry. If an anxious thought or worry comes into your head during the day, make a brief note of it put it in your “Worry Box” and then continue about your day. Remind yourself that you will have time to think about it later, so there is no need to worry about it right now.

3. Go over your "worry list" during the worry period. If the thoughts you wrote down are still bothering you, allow yourself to worry about them, but only for the amount of time you’ve specified for your worry period. If they do not seem important any more, cut your worry period short and enjoy the rest of your day.

The “Worry Box”. Find a small container perhaps one of those plastic take away containers with a lid. On top of the lid write “My WORRY TIME – 5.00 PM –5.30 PM. Throughout the day when those situations arise that can lead you to worry, write it down on a slip of paper and put it into your “Worry Box”. Leave it in there and move on to whatever it is that you are doing. At 5.00 pm go to your “Worry Box” and remove your slips of paper of your worries. This is the time to worry. Deal with as many of the worries as you can and discard them. Add other worries for the next day.

Surprisingly one often finds that what you thought to be a worry previously no longer seems to be a worry.

We have some “Worry Boxes” to which you are welcome. Please let us know and we can post one out to you or you can come and collect it, or, if people are going your way we can ask them to deliver it to you.Whatever you do, have a LLSD 2017. Many of us have also found the book “Jesus Calling” by Sarah Young helpful giving a thought for each day of the year. If you would like a free copy just ring and ask, and we will send one out to you for free.

THE ARCHDIOCESE OF PERTH INVITES YOU TO “DISCOVER RESTORATIVE

JUSTICE TOGETHER”

Page 3: Emmanuel Centreemmanuelcentre.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/pp …  · Web viewThe world of today is very demanding. Life seems to be so fast and sometimes things seem to spin

In the Year of Mercy last year, the Archdiocese of Perth offered many initiatives throughout the Diocese. Because Justice and Mercy are so interconnected, one initiative offered by the Archdiocese was a course in Discovering Restorative Justice Together. This was so popular that we added a second stream. We will again offer you an opportunity to join with us in Discovering Restorative Justice Together.

Restorative Justice is a way of building relationships in any setting - families, parishes, organisations, communities, workplaces, etc. When we are harmed or we do harm, relationships are damaged. Restoring “right relationships” when relationships have been broken includes relationships with others and with God. Learning how this harm can be addressed in such a way that we don’t need to carry that hurt for the rest of our lives can be a long process. This course will help us to get started on that journey.

Restorative Justice is also proactive, which means it can help prevent harm happening. We can learn a new way of relating to people, where everyone communicates honestly with each other; really listens; and feels comfortable in letting others know our affective side.

The principles of Restorative Justice can also form a basis for developing policies, running, organisations, parishes, and families in many settings.

This course is free of charge and open to anyone, including but not limited to priests, agencies, chaplains, lay people, parish councillors organisations etc. While the Church is holy the Church is human, too. The sessions will be held at the Catholic Pastoral Centre (40a Mary Street, Highgate) over four Wednesdays, once a month on Wednesday March 1, Wednesday April 5, Wednesday May 3, Wednesday June 7. Sessions will be held from 9-12.30 pm and include morning tea and lunch.

Because each session is connected, it is important for participants to commit to all four sessions. Numbers are limited to 20 to allow participants the space to interact. For that reason and also to allow time for preparation (including pre-reading), please register your interest with Claire Chew as soon as possible so we can send you material before the course starts. Workshops encourage justice and empathy08 Dec 2016 by Caroline Smith (Adapted)

Approaching relationships from a fresh and empathetic perspective was the goal for staff from several West Australian dioceses – including the Archdiocese of Perth – who recently took part in a program of monthly workshops entitled ‘Discovering Restorative Justice Together’.The program involved 38 participants split into two groups: one group met over four months from July to October, while the second met from August to November, at the Catholic Pastoral Centre in Highgate.Emmanuel Centre Co-ordinator and workshop organiser, Barbara Harris, said she had studied and used restorative justice principles in the past.“I was talking about it to other people, and they showed an interest in learning about it, so the Archdiocese said let’s run a program and we did,” she said.“This had never happened in the Archdiocese before, and it was very humbling. I was overwhelmed by the trust that people put into it.“We had people who were prison chaplains, people from parish councils, people from schools and agencies, someone from The Safeguarding Project. There was one lady who came from Carnarvon and a representative from the Bunbury Diocese.” We also had four people from the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry team who came to the workshops.”Mrs Harris said the circle model was inspired by the way many Aboriginal communities in Australia and around the world approach decision-making, something that she had encountered in her childhood in the northern suburbs of Perth living close to an indigenous community.“The idea of the circle comes from the way Indigenous people looked at the way to build and sustain community.

Catholic Outreach Director Peter McMinn, who also took part in the workshops, said he was impressed by the unique approach they offered to resolving conflict, quite different from the punitive approach often found in wider society. “In our existing justice system, when someone is hurt, you do the crime you do the time, and at the end of that, are people healed?” he asked. “In this model, we realise that there are more people involved in a situation than just the person who’s at fault and the person who’s been directly injured – there are the family of both of those, and the friends of both of those. “ So any act that breaks the relationship has wider ramifications. The restorative justice’s focus on relationships gives us tools and a way of thinking to heal those issues together. ”The restorative justice approach fitted in quite well with the teachings and behaviour of Jesus,” Mr McMinn added.During the circle activity, participants used a ‘talking stick’ to indicate when they wanted to address the group, and this encouraged others to listen to the speaker’s story at greater depth, really listening: not trying to solve the person’s problems,

“We hope that this breaks open, for the Archdiocese, a different way of dealing with relationships, so that we grow together,” Barbara said.

Or email: [email protected] you look at the calendar on Page 1 of our news-letter you will see that from 9.30am to 2pm each week different courses are offered. All

these programs have a common theme of learning for participants. For example, the Challenge Program offered on Mondays before Morning Tea is offered to extend the learning experiences of People with disability who may have missed out on many things that are taken for granted including opportunities for learning flower arranging, simple cooking, drama or learning how to make paper. Other activities include throughout Monday and Tuesday include, preparing lunch for 15 people, painting, mosaics, scrapbooking etc. Cost for the day’s activities is $2.00 which includes morning and afternoon tea and lunch. The program works best if people attend regularly at a specific time. This means that there are enough people to support those that need some help. If you would like to be involved as a volunteer support person in any of our programs you would be most welcome.

VOLUNTEERS WHO UNDERSTAND SPINNING AND WEAVING.

EMMANUEL’S ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTSFor nearly 20 years Emmanuel has been involved in RECYCLE NEWSPAPERS,

CARDBOARD, BOOKS, PAMPHLETS AND OFFICE PAPER. Recycling one ton of paper can save 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space and 4,000 kilowatts of energy-enough to power the average Australian home for six months-and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one metric ton of carbon equivalent (MTCE). Last year Emmanuel’s efforts saved nearly 600 trees. “I will leave you to do the maths to demonstrate what other effects this had”. We want to thank all those people who dropped off newspapers etc at

Emmanuel Centre and we thank the parishes that provide bins for collecting and then bringing the papers to Emmanuel.

WHAT IS ON AT EMMANUEL CENTRE DURING LENT

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT SACRIFICE?

The Catholic catechism reminds us “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.” St Jerome, who translated the Bible into Latin, said that in the 4th century AD. It is not a new thought. So what happens when we do look at the Scriptures and their relationship To the Mass today? The Catholic Catechism

(CCC, no. 1096) says to understand “Christian Liturgy” we must first understand “Jewish Liturgy. Jesus and his apostles were coming from a Jewish background. It would be natural for them to bring with them practices with which they were familiar. Many of you will remember when we referred to the Mass as “the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.” We need to understand sacrifice. For the Israelites, sacrifices could only be carried out in the temple.

EMMANUEL CENTRE HAS CHRISTMAS CHEER IN SPADES08 Dec 2016 by Rachel Curry

The Emmanuel Centre has this week celebrated the gift of a new workshop shed at their annual Christmas Party, with Emeritus Archbishop Barry Hickey blessing the structure in front of a large group of people with disabilities, staff members, volunteers, family and friends.Speaking at the event on Monday, 5 December, Emeritus Archbishop Hickey prayed that the new shed would bring “friendship, skill-building and a strong sense of purpose within this community of Emmanuel”.An Archdiocesan agency which functions as a self-help

centre for people with disabilities, the Emmanuel Centre also encompasses the Catholic Ministry for People who are Deaf or Hearing Impaired, Catholic Association for Special Education Support and mental health groups.Their annual Christmas Party, which featured Christmas carols in St Francis Xavier Church and a shared meal in the Emmanuel Centre courtyard, was the perfect occasion to celebrate

their many achievements from 2016.Alongside the construction of their new workshop shed, the agency’s roof and kitchen were renovated and they built a wicking garden to grow vegetables. They continued their challenger program and regular activities in the hall and held special events for the Jubilee Year of Mercy, including a Family Day for Deaf People during Lent.Other highlights include initiating new Mental Health First Aid scholarships for people volunteering to work in

parishes and running a restorative justice program for the Archdiocese of Perth.

IN PREPARATION FOR EASTER WE WILL HOLD A SEDAR MEAL WITH PARISHIONERS FROM ST FRANCIS XAVIER CHURCH

Summing up the year’s successes, Emmanuel Centre Co-ordinator Barbara Harris said the agency had assisted 3500 people through 35,005 volunteer hours in 2016.“The volunteers are vital to the mission of the Emmanuel Centre. We are supported and encouraged by the volunteers we have,” she said.

Mrs Harris also spoke about the fortuitous timing of the Christmas Party, which highlighted several causes close to the heart of the Emmanuel Centre.“It’s really a special day today, other than the fact it was the Feast of Saint Barbara yesterday,” she joked.Photos from Lance Farmer

“This is our annual Christmas Party, last Saturday was the International Day of People with a Disability and today is the United Nations International Volunteer Day.”
