V e r t i c a l M e t r o p o l i s Facing an exponential decrease in the world’s resources, coupled with an exponen-

tial increase in population, we must look for a new strategy to increase the sus-

tainability of our communities. Cities are being forced to expand, whether through

horizontal sprawl or increased verticality but either option will continue to result in

more air pollution and intake of consumables.

Vertical Metropolis is able to create and sustain its own energy through an algae

facade. The algae membrane of tubing enclosing the building eliminates pollution

by feeding on CO2 and NO2 emissions from the congested highways and streets of

Los Angeles, while providing a renewable source of energy and a new construction

material. Volvox, a type of green algae was used as formal inspiration as well as for

systematic growth and replication.

E c h o P a r k H i g h S c h o o lThe design for Echo Park High School was driven by the need to produce a healthy

and enjoyable learning environment for both students and faculty. Interior illumina-

tion is primarily naturally light, with variations created by the patterning of opaque

and translucent panels in the exterior diagrid. Tracking the sun position as it re-

volves around the school shows the different qualities of light achieved in larger

spaces such as the atrium and auditorium. Spatially the high school is organized by

a folded plate, which intersects the building, keeping non-educational programs on

the ground floor, educational programs on the top, and the mixed use areas forming

a buffer zone in the middle.

Construction

L o d g e H o t e lThis proposed Lodge Hotel for Joshua Tree National Park was built based upon five

principles.

- Sun Shading

- Open Public Spaces

- Cross Ventilation Dimensions

- Linked Public Program

- Site Integration

The extreme weather conditions of the desert were a major influence on decision

making during the design process. The 10’ deep, habitable brise soleil on the North

and South facades blocks the summer sun, while allowing the winter sun to pene-

trate the rooms and passively warm them. Open public spaces allow for more social

interactions to occur. Program dimensions were dictated by the maximum size that

would allow use of passive cross ventilation tactics. In the final design, two bars of

hotel rooms are connected by public program bridges, providing views of the desert

at heights that vary from fifteen to sixty feet. Site integration was favorable because

it prevented the building from becoming too obtrusive within the natural landscape.
