This updated edition of the Ella Sharp Museum's quarterly newsletter covers March through May 2015.

Spring is peeking just around the corner and we are gearing up for our traditional farm activities: the annual Sugaring & Shearing festival sponsored by American 1 Credit Union, our long-serving curriculum program for second graders, the return of Patio Parties in April, and of course plans are well underway for the 11th annual Art, Beer & Wine festival presented by County National Bank to be held June 6.

The winter class schedule has been full of Thursday night fun at Studio 21. This popular painting and wine class had quite a following and was full with a waiting list almost every week. We are glad this class was so popular and it will return again in the fall.

In April we will begin our spring Patio Parties sponsored again by our friends at Rehmann. 2014 saw us averaging 100 attendees per week for music, light snacks and a cash bar on the Granary Patio.

Please plan again to join us for many lovely evenings together Thursday nights from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

You will also notice that there is an events calendar to pull out of this issue and hang in a convenient spot—on your fridge, by your computer—to reference the busy schedule of events. We are always searching for ways to better inform our members. The calendar will be a monthly mailing to our members and they will also be available to visitors at the museum. Please let us know how you like it!

See you soon at the museum!

From the Director

Amy Reimann

For the past 40 years, the museum has offered a curriculum-based program for second graders that has been called Pioneer Living. Students arrive to spend the day in the mid-1800s in the log cabin, schoolhouse, wood shop and general store complex. Nearly all second graders in Jackson County participate in the program and many from neighboring counties as well.

This spring we are offering program updates that continue with the curriculum standards and also address 21st century learning styles with more active learning components. Our docent corps has been hard at work learning the new additions and how they dovetail into the previous program. We are excited to welcome “Living History at Hillside” to our growing list of field trip options at the museum!

MoSAIC is a collaborative effort sponsored and funded by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and administered by the Bridges organization. Together, the two organizations are creating a series of conferences and festivals on mathematical connections in science, art, industry, and culture, to be held in colleges and universities around the United States and abroad.

The Ella Sharp Museum is assisting the MoSAIC team with their traveling exhibition by packing artwork, preparing condition reports and arranging shipping. When the exhibit is not traveling, we have the opportunity to share the unique artwork with visitors to the museum.

Singularity House: Free Art will include the work of more than forty artists of various media from Jackson and surrounding areas. Founded in 2011, The Singularity House began as an outlet for open minded individuals to work together to bring together all forms of art.

Written in the Mitten is organized by the Michigan Association of Calligraphers (MAC) and Pen Dragons Calligraphy Guild. There will be an opening reception on April 18, 2 to 4 p.m., with a calligraphy demonstration by Vicki Corwin of MAC and a gallery talk by Jane Ewing of Pen Dragons.
