WHY ARE NEW CHAIRS NEEDED? The chairs in the Elizabeth College Hall are constantly on the move. Every day, week and term the chairs are being put out or stored away for assemblies, drama work, packed lunches, performances, CCF ac vi es, lectures, debates, PE ac vi es and school produc ons. Those who have spent any me in the College Hall will be well aware of the limita ons of the exis ng chairs. They are not comfortable, take up a lot of space when stored on their racks and, a er 15 years, are showing considerable signs of wear and tear to the extent that some are no longer safe to use. Elizabeth College has selected the 40/4 chair as a replacement. This chair is one of the most space‐saving chairs on the market; a stack of 40 chairs is only 4 feet high (hence the name). With a wood veneer seat and slim metal rod frame it has an elegant design which complements the historic College Hall environment. The chair is in wide use across the UK and Europe in schools, businesses, organisa ons, churches and medieval cathedrals. Sponsoring a chair is a great way of helping the College and at the same me leaving your name, or the name of a member of your family, within Elizabeth College. Each chair will have a plaque showing the sponsor’s name (and number if relevant/required). If you would like to sponsor one or more chairs, please complete the form on the back of this leaflet, and return it to the College.

WHY THE 40/4 CHAIR? • They  are  stylish,  elegant  and  remarkably

comfortable  ‐ our current chairs are uncomfortable and do not enhance the historic environment of the College Hall.

• They  can  be  stacked  and moved  easily  ‐ College Hall is be used for many different ac vi es in a school day. It is essen al that the chairs are light enough to be stacked easily and able to be stored in a small space.

• They  are  hard‐wearing  ‐  the new chairs have proved their durability in many other schools, universi es, cathedrals and similar environments.

A DESIGN CLASSIC

David Rowland’s award‐winning 40/4 stackable chair is arguably one of the most important designs of the 20th century with over eight million sold since its incep on in 1964. The 40/4 chair is featured in design collec ons and museums the world over, in recogni on of its elegant lines, excellent ergonomics, unsurpassed stacking and handling, and space‐saving advantages. Recent purchasers include Bryanston, Sherborne and Bedales Schools, Imperial College, Bristol and Edinburgh Universi es and Salisbury Cathedral. The Howe 40/4 has won many design awards and is in the permanent collec on of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Condi ons of Sponsorship • All chairs will remain the property of Elizabeth College and sponsorship of a chair does not en tle the sponsor to any special admission or sea ng rights. • The chairs are designed so that they may be easily stacked and moved from the hall. The full set of chairs are not required for every seated use of the Hall and so a sponsored chair may not always be in use.

“These chairs will make a huge difference to the comfort of pupils and parents during Elizabeth College ac vi es;  I am sure  I am not  the only person who has been distracted by suffering a numb behind during an otherwise enjoyable play. The  laying  out  and  removal  process will  be  far  easier  and quicker for our caretakers and the efficiency of the stacking enables the chairs to be stored away safely when not in use in a much smaller space.”   George Hartley ‐ Principal of Elizabeth College
