As I write this, we are just entering the colder winter months during which much of nature goes dormant. So, why are we depicting spring-like images of planting seeds and sprouting new growth this time of year? Well, unlike nature, it’s growing season all year round at DCCH. Whether it’s November or April, we continually strive to plant the seeds of hope and healing within the children and families whom we serve. Our goal is to help these individuals cultivate healthier lives and bloom to their full potentials. Our garden never closes, and we are blessed with employees, volunteers, and donors who enable us to compassionately tend to it day in and out.

Please take a few moments to look through the enclosed information. You will find that DCCH remains steadfast in its commitment to provide high-quality care through outcome-based treatment and mindful stewardship of our resources. I also encourage you to note the many names of folks listed in this publication. We are grateful to all of them for partnering with us on our mission of healing and growth.

ME E TJENNA

Jenna came to DCCH from a home where she experienced both abuse and neglect.

When she arrived, she was withdrawn, angry, and afraid of others. She felt she didn’t

deserve to be loved or to be part of any family. Well, Jenna has made great progress

during her time with us and will be transitioning to a foster family soon. Recently, Jenna

wrote a beautiful letter to DCCH staff sharing the ways she believes she has made

progress and that she is ready to be in a family. Prior to writing the letter, Jenna shared

with her Therapist that she thought she was going to another facility, rather than to a

family. When the Therapist told her she didn’t need any more treatment and deserved

to be in a family, Jenna cried and said no one had ever told her that before.

When asked if she had any questions about her new foster mom, she said “Yes, I do have a question. The one question I have is ‘Does she have what it takes?’” Jenna’s ability to share her biggest fear showed how far she had come. Her foster mom responded, “I don’t give up without a fight.” Jenna broke into a big smile. It is incredible to see the growth and improvement Jenna has made under the care of her team. This child who was so detached and emotionally unavailable has bloomed into a confident young woman. She still has a ways to go, but the most striking change isn’t in her behaviors, it’s in the hope you can now see in her eyes.

These details are important because all of you play a part in helping our kids succeed; in giving them hope. They all have their own unique stories which often include beliefs that they won’t succeed, they don’t deserve to be loved, or to be in families. Frequently, it’s not only the child that thinks this way, but also the adults in their lives.

With your support, we are able to impact each child’s story. We do this by believing in them, even when they don’t believe in themselves. We tell them we believe in them, over and over, until, like Jenna, they start to believe it and discover hope.

Make a gift to DCCH! All gifts are welcome and every single gift makes an impact. You can support the children living at DCCH through honor and memorial gifts, in-kind gifts, restricted gifts, bequests, and gifts of stock. Open your heart to a foster child! The children we serve need safe, loving homes. DCCH provides training and support every step of the way. We are also in need of both short-term and long-term foster families. Even if fostering is not for you at this time, we still need individuals to help with child care during trainings and support meetings. Please call Ron Bertsch, Director of Therapeutic Foster Care and Adoption, at 859/331-2040 ext. 8641 or email [email protected].

Volunteer! We have volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, and groups. Become a tutor or mentor for a child in Residential Treatment, provide child care during Foster Care Support Group meetings, greet and guide guests when they arrive at our Welcome Center, or help out around the grounds and facilities. Give a child the gift of your time. Please email us at [email protected] to get started today!

Let us visit and share our kids’ stories! The DCCH staff are thrilled to share the stories of triumph and success of the children at DCCH. We’d love to speak to your church, civic group, or organization. Or, come out and visit our campus for a guided tour. Residential Treatment ProgramOur Residential Treatment Program serves boys and girls, ages six through 14 who have been removed from their homes, in many cases, due to extreme physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and neglect.

We provide these fragile children with a safe place to sleep, healthy meals, appropriate clothing and shoes, specialized education, and intensive behavioral therapy to move them out of pain and suffering to a place where they find a strong sense of security, peace, and hope.

Therapeutic Foster Care ProgramOur Therapeutic Foster Care Program recruits, trains, and supports foster families willing to open their homes to children in need. Therapeutic Foster Care is slightly different from traditional foster care because the behaviors and needs of children may be more challenging due to their abusive pasts. We recruit and train dedicated Foster Families to provide short-term respite care or longer-term foster care.

Therapy Center at DCCHThe Therapy Center offers quality therapy and mental health services, including grief counseling; individual, family and marital therapy; and more. The Therapy Center is a natural extension of our commitment to serving children and families in our community. Experienced therapists work closely with clients to help them identify, assess, and meet their needs and goals. We empower clients to build and strengthen meaningful relationships with themselves and others.
