Engineering Control

Do you have the resources of time and manpower to ensure that your site is operated safely and securely and in accordance with legislative and corporate standards?

Demands on Operators

With decreasing engineering support staff on many sites and the increasing burden of legislation designed to drive up standards of safety, the role of the site electrical safety management becomes ever more challenging. Maintaining a well-documented, secure and safe electrical distribution system, as well as managing project work becomes ever more difficult to achieve.

Support for the Operator

GSE Systems can offer a wide range of services to support your site team with all aspects of on-going enhancements of electrical engineering, from a safety audit of the site, distribution system analysis, such as fault level and protection co-ordination studies, right through to developing safe operating procedures, competency assessments and provision of training. GSE staff are also well-placed to assist site personnel keep abreast of new legislation and implement changes necessary for the site to remain compliant.

Services on offer include:

• Full systems audit, with a detailed review of findings

• Comprehensive electrical survey

• Distribution system records

• System analysis, including;

• Fault Levels

• Protection Co-ordination

System analysis

• Fault Levels Ensuring switchgear capability under short circuit complies with E.A.W.R. 1989

• Protection Co-ordination Ensuring electrical systems remain stable under fault conditions, minimising disruption to operating plant.

• Arc Flash Risk Assessment Ensuring Safe Protection for your operators and maintenance engineers from Arc Flash effects, caused by faulted switchgear. The GSE service includes risk assessment, risk mitigation and implementation.

• Touch / Step voltage calculations Ensuring compliance with BS6761, 17th Edition

Using sophisticated software to model your site distribution system and carry out a range of studies to ensure that it is safe and supplies are secure. The efforts of proposed changes and additions to the system may then be added into system model to understand impact.

Arc energy studies provide a basis for risk reduction in switching operations and recommendations for PPE.

• Safe Working Procedures Development of a wide range of site-specific safety related operating procedures based on legislative requirements, standards and best practice.

• Equipment Registration Registering equipment used in hazardous areas, supplied via plugs and sockets or known or suspected of deterioration during use. Scheduling of inspections, maintaining records of such inspections and repairs.

• Training & Competency Assessment Training in procedures and good working practices for site based personnel.

• Hazardous Area Classifications Inspections & Records Hazardous area surveys and production of hazardous area floor plans.

GSE Systems can also provide a hazardous area database for recording equipment inspections results and close-out.

• Engineering Design and Project Management Dealing with all aspects of design; from one line diagram conceptual stage to production of a complete design package for installation purposes. A full design and project management service from a feasibility study and conceptual design through to procurement installation, commissioning and operations for electrical, automation and process control projects.

• Surveillance Visits and Auditing Continuing surveillance visits and audits to ensure that targets for improvements are being met and progress sustained.

• Leadership, Safety Culture and Compliance GSE Systems can provide an Electrical Systems Manager who will manage all aspects of site electrical engineering.
