Stewardship-Sharing Our Treasure with the Community

“PETER’S PENCE” IS THE AUGUST RECIPIENT! In his address of March 20, 2013, Pope Francis spoke of our responsibility before the world and creation. “There is much that we can do to benefit the poor, the needy and those who suffer, and to favor justice, promote reconciliation and build peace,” he said. The Peter’s pence collection derives its name from

an ancient custom. In ninth-century England, King Alfred the Great collected money, a “pence,” from landowners as financial support for the pope. Today, the Peter’s pence collection has evolved to fund the Holy See’s charitable actions for those in need. The second collection for Peter’s pence is to provide the Holy Father with the financial means to provide emergency assistance to those in need because of natural disaster, war, oppression, and disease. Please be generous with your support.

The men did their part and won 16-4, but the unthinkable happened: Holy Family, who beat Good Shepherd 12-6 earlier in the year, managed to score ZERO runs in a SOFTBALL game, and OLG Purple managed to lose FOR THE FIRST TIME to OLG White, so we ended up in a four-way tie for second place. Based on a complex tie-breaker system that includes the phase of the moon on our patronal feast days and the number of letters in the middle names of our third basemen, St. Gabriel’s comes out last of the four, so we’re out of the

playoffs. Thanks for everyone’s support, and we’ll see you next year! Next week: 6:15pm: OLG Purple vs. OLG White, Good Shepherd vs. Holy Family, winners play for the championship at 7:30pm.

Final Standings 1. OLG Purple ·············· 7-1 2. Good Shep. ·············· 5-3 2. Holy Family ·············· 5-3 2. OLG White ·············· 5-3 2. St. Gabriel ··············· 5-3 6. St. Bart’s Bl. ·············· 2-6 6. St. Bart’s Gd. ··········· 2-6 8. St. Patrick ················· 1-7

Parish News

Dear Parishioners, On the plane ride back to Italy, the Holy Father gave an impromptu 80 minute interview to the Italian reporters traveling with him. If you just read the news accounts, you may not get the whole context, so I’d like to reproduce a few of his answers here, and offer my comments. To a question about the role of women in the Church, the pope responded,

A Church without women is like the apostolic college without Mary. The role of women is the icon of the Virgin, of Our Lady. And Our Lady is more important than the apostles. The Church is feminine because it is wife and mother. To go further, you cannot understand a Church without active women in it. We have not done a theology of woman; we have to do it. With regard to the ordination of women, the Church has spoken and said “no.” John Paul II has expressed a definitive formulation, that door is closed. But remember that Mary is more important than the apostles, the bishops, and so the woman in the Church is more important than bishops and priests.

Anyone who has spent any time working in a parish knows how true these words are. Without the dedicated service of the women of the parish, there would be no parish. Do not be surprised if Pope Francis follows up on this theme at some point during his pontificate, and gives us a more developed theology of woman! To a question on the divorced and remarried receiving communion, he responded,

It's a topic that always comes up. I think this is the time of mercy, this change of epoch in which there are many problems both in the Church and through the not-good testimonies of some priests. Clericalism has left many injured, and you have to go to treat these injuries with mercy. The Church is mother, and inside the Church should be found mercy for all. And the wounded not only have to be waited for, but you have to go and find them. The divorced can take communion, it is the divorced and in a second marriage who cannot. You have to look at the issue in the totality of the pastoral care of marriage. When I meet with the group of eight cardinals in the first three days of October, we will discuss how to move forward in the pastoral care of marriage. We are on a path to a deeper pastoral care of marriage. My predecessor in Buenos Aires, Cardinal Quarracino, always said: "For me, half of all marriages are invalid, because they get married without knowing it is forever, or because they do it for social convenience, etc. ...” The theme of nullity should be studied.

The state of marriage in the world, especially in the Western world, is a great concern of the Church and of the Holy Father. The pope, as we see that he always does, approaches the question first as a pastor, remarking that this is a time of mercy, and chastising priests to not harm the faithful as they give testimony. While it will always be true that the sacramental bond of marriage is for life (“What God has joined together, no human being can separate”) and that therefore those who remarry outside of the Church are placing themselves outside of communion, the Holy Father recognizes that

this does not exhaust all that needs to be said about the topic, and that a greater pastoral care of marriage is needed. And on the so-called “gay lobby” within the Vatican, he responded,

A lot is written about the gay lobby, but so far I have not found in the Vatican anyone who has written "gay" on his identity card. One must distinguish between being gay, having this tendency, and lobbying. All lobbies are not good. If a person is gay and seeks the Lord with good will, who am I to judge him? The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that gay people should not be discriminated against, but received. The problem is not about having this tendency; the problem is lobbying for it, and the same goes for lobbies of greed, political lobbies, and masonic lobbies.”

This paragraph received a lot of coverage in the news, though the headlines were mostly misleading. As his predecessors always did before him, the pope distinguished between having homosexual tendencies and committing homosexual acts, or in this case, lobbying for condoning such acts. It should come as no surprise that the pope would refrain from judging another, because the Lord himself told us that we cannot judge another person. We can and must, however, judge actions, as the pope does in this paragraph when he condemns lobbying within the Church. It is my hope that the discussion this paragraph has begun will lead to greater inclusion for those “persons who are gay and seek the Lord with good will.” I think I have mentioned before that I am one of the chaplains for the local Courage Ministry – the archdiocesan ministry to those who have same-sex attraction but who recognize the truth of Church teaching and are striving to live a chaste life. These men are among the most faithful that I know – attending daily Mass, frequenting Confession, singing in their parish choirs, teaching in RCIA and faith formation programs, etc. They are not defined by their sexual orientation, but by being sons of God – a message that we need to convey with our words and our actions to those with same-sex attraction. -Fr. Liekhus

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, © Copyright © J.
