The Jury

MR. FRANCIS HENRY TAYLORDirector, Worcest er A r t Museu m .Em er itus Dir ector, MetropolitanMuseum of Art.

Report of the Jury

Th e 18th Annual Exhi biti on const itu tes a stimula ting asse mblage of wor k by Texasa rtists. Th e ori gin ality and variety of the wor k submitted made the task of selec tio nboth cha lleng ing and difficult. Sixty pai nt ings and ten pieces of sculpture were admitted. No more tha n one item by each ar tist was accepted, although eac h a rti st was entitledto submit two entr ies.

Th e strength of the Exhi bitio n lies in the paintings. Th e sculpture was not of thesame high ord er and for thi s reason no sculpture was considered worthy of consideration for a cash award. Th e recomm endation of the jury for the Purcha ses and Awardsare listed on the fa cin g pa ge.

Gene ra lly spea king, exce pt for the sculpture, th e Exhibition is one which rank shighl y with the major regional and national exhibition of the Uni ted States. Vit ality,an intense curiosity to experiment with the violent sunlight and color of Texa s, thenostalgia for land scap e, and th e clarity and simplicity of vision , as well as utter an cewhi ch are so generally reflected in these pa intings, not only promise well for the futurebut will a lready bring to the country at large a new and vigorous note in the annal sof Am eri can painting.

An y exhibition juried by a single individu al mu st necessaril y be colo red by thatper son 's taste and pr ed ilections. It is my hope that witho ut compromising my ownpoin t of view, I have given as fair and objective a re port as possib le on the entr ies tothi s exhibition.
