mBot characteristics

○ Open source programming platform

○ Good quality price ratio○ Unprotected hardware board and

components○ Suitable for older primary school

children○ Not appropriate for kindergarten

children

From mBot to CocciBot

There was a need to make mBot usable by older and younger children (adaptation)

An adaptation that had two main objectives:

○ to adapt the robot for for younger users by designing a shell for the mBot

○ to add autonomous programming feature (no external device)

Characteristics of CocciBot

○ It’s an animal type robot : the shell of a funny ladybug

○ Colorful : the popular red-and-black North American

seven-spotted species

○ It has volume for the integration of the mBot.

How CocciBot works

○ Can be programmed via the mBlock software (on a computer)○ Programmable through a seven button interface (the dots of

the insect)○ seven basic functions: “Forward”, “Backward”, “Left”, “Right”,

“Pause”, “Clear” and “Go”○ Orthogonal directions only○ Feedback signals: illuminating antennas with programmable

color patterns, sound signals

Limits and future work

Limits:

○ Educators need high programming skills to customize CocciBot○ Accuracy depends on the surface material

Future work:

○ Implement many modes of behavior that can be activated through predefined codes

○ Make selectable itinerary parameters (unit distance, rotation angle, etc.)○ Add diagonal direction (45 degrees)○ Improve accuracy○ Improve the audio-visual signals○ Elaborate general best practices (guidelines) in using pedagogical robots
