EDUCATOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Remixing Your K-8 Science Curriculum For K-8 educators - June 6, 2020 Presenters: Dr. Salika Lawrence & Dr. Marisa Castronova This hands-on workshop will guide participants as learners through simulated experiences that help reframe K-8 science classrooms as engaging environments that reinforce Culturally Responsive practices. Participants will learn that teaching science well to all students, while connecting lessons to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), requires frontloading and purposeful planning. In this workshop, teachers will have the opportunity to experience a NGSS classroom model that provides access and entry to all learners. After identifying and reflecting on the important components of the model, teachers will have the opportunity to reframe classroom activities to be Culturally Responsive and in the spirit of NGSS. Participants will

1. Understand how Next Generation Science Standards align with Culturally Responsive practices.2. Examine how science classrooms allow for inclusivity through inquiry, collaboration, and creativity.

Beyond the Book: Critical Inquiry & Rigor in English Language Arts Classrooms (grades 6-12) May 2, 2020Presenters: Dr. Salika Lawrence & Tiffany Labissiere This workshop introduces middle and high school teachers to strategies for increasing rigor and critical analysis of texts. Presenters will model hands-on strategies that foster classroom discussions, and inquiry as springboards into close analysis of social issues beyond the text. Presenters will introduce participants to ready-to use frameworks for analyzing texts. Then participants will apply these protocols to a wide range of traditional and nontraditional texts. Throughout the workshop, emphasis will be placed on motivation, engagement, access, and creating inclusive classrooms where all students can actively participate. The presenters will model a wide range of strategies that differentiate for diverse learners while maintaining high expectations and rigor. Participants will

1. Learn how to identify and select materials for use in their own classrooms.2. Increase awareness of how to purposely connect reading, writing and student-centered discussions about texts.3. Explore developmentally appropriate strategies for engaging adolescents in critical analysis of a wide range of texts.

STREAM: A Model for Project-Based Learning For K-12 educators - April 25, 2020 Presenters: Tiffany Labissiere & Marie Donnantuono This workshop introduces participants to the framework: science, technology, research, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STREAM). This framework allows educators to design project-based, integrated learning experience that foster 21st Century learning skills: collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking. Presenters will explain how project-based learning helps students exceed standards and curricular expectations. Then the presenters will use a myriad of texts to demonstrate how authentic literature, as well as print and nonprint texts, can be used to foster inquiry in K-12 classrooms. Participants will

1. Learn how to apply an integrated model for project-based learning.2. Understand how project-based learning aligns to curricular standards.3. Learn how to use authentic literature to foster inquiry in K-12 classrooms.

Using Culturally Responsive Pedagogy to Create Engaging Classrooms: Strategies for Supporting All Learners For K-12 educators - June 13, 2020 Presenter: Dr. Salika Lawrence & Dr. Tabora JohnsonClassrooms today are more diverse that every before. Consequently, educators seek strategies for creating inclusive learning environments that support the multidimensional needs of all learners. This workshop allows participants to explore how Culturally Responsive Pedagogy can be used as a framework for creating classrooms that engage all students and promote culturally sustaining practices. Presenters will identify techniques for differentiating and adapting traditional instructional practices to allow diverse learners access to the curriculum. Participants will

1. Understand how Culturally Responsive Pedagogy is used as a framework for supporting the academic achievement of diverse learners.2. Explore a range of digital tools that can be used for purposeful, technology integration.3. Examine authentic examples of how to enact Culturally Responsive Pedagogy into today’s classrooms.
