The NSTS International Academy was set up to offer educational programmes of quality either in cooperation with other like-minded educational institutions or programmes developed through its own resources.

It incorporates the NSTS English Language Institute which is the oldest English Language School in Malta, having welcomed its first students fifty years ago. It is recognised as a leader in Malta and founded the Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations—Malta to improve the quality standards throughout this sector.

It is now also the home of the Columbia College Malta Campus offering degrees in business administration with a view to offering degrees in other areas in the future*.

The NSTS International Academy is ultimately guided by the values and objectives of the National Student Travel Foundation (NSTF), a non-profit organisation which seeks to further the internationalisation of education through travel and innovative educational programmes as well as mobility programmes such as work placements and internships.

Our approach, therefore, is one where we seek a heightened level of involvement with our students and learners through our pastoral and customer care service to ensure that each one gets the most out of their experience in Malta.

It is in this tradition that NSTS International Academy, building on its 50-year reputation of pioneering and leading the teaching of English as a Foreign Language in Malta, was set up to offer quality educational programmes at various levels from high school to tertiary level in conjunction with like-minded reputable educational institutions.

MALTAA COSMOPOLITAN DESTINATIONFOR YOUR EDUCATION

Malta has a strong tradition of quality education.

While this dates back to the period of Arab rule between 870 and 1090 when Arabic numerals were introduced, it was, however, the arrival of the various religious orders starting with the Franciscans in 1350 through to 1492 with the arrival of the Friar Minors, that religious-based education was brought to the island leading to children from wealthy families being tutored by members of these religious orders with classes in Italian, Latin and numeracy being later set up.

In 1592, the Society of Jesus established the Collegium Melitense around which various other educational entities were established, essentially laying the foundation for higher education in Malta with a

MALTA is, in the main, English-speaking, having adopted English as its official language during the latter part of the 160 years of British rule which ended in 1964. This lends the country an advantage which has helped in no small measure to persuade world renowned companies in locating their business in Malta, notably within the financial services and pharmaceutical sectors.

Malta is an ideal place where one can pursue one’s studies against a background of history and culture yet firmly in step with today’s world.

Located south of Italy in the heart of the Mediterranean and comprising three fascinating islands, it has a population of only 400,000 inhabitants.

Its vibrant lifestyle and outstanding history reaching back to very early civilisation offer you a multitude of opportunities to complement any study programme making your stay a memorably exciting and profitable time to look back to with fond memories and very probably, many friendships and contacts.

MALTESE FRIENDSHIP AND HOSPITALITY

With such a small population, Malta can be seen as just one big family of friendly people who enjoy food and a good quality of life.

The Maltese are well known for their generosity and will always offer you friendship and hospitality. They readily speak English and are eager to share their experiences with you, seeking to learn more about your culture and ways of life at home.

Feel free to start a conversation when at a café, while shopping or sightseeing and you will soon find yourself in a hearty conversation. All this makes Malta a safe and secure place to be in.

A SMART ISLAND STEEPED IN 7 MILLENIA OF HISTORY

Malta is a smart island. It has an extensive IT infrastructure that keeps you in touch with your family, friends and work. You will find free Wi-Fi spots in most popular piazzas and public places of relaxation.

Malta is the cradle of civilisation. It is home to the world’s first ever and most impressive free standing monuments. Its capital, Valletta, is the seat of the first ever European governance that ruled as early as from the 16th century.

Malta is a place of firsts. A place of contrasts. An eclectic country of new and old, modern and antique. A destination that grows on you and gives you so much in return.

300 DAYS OF SUNSHINE, WARM MEDITERRANEAN WINTERS AND INVITING SEAS

The recent edition of the authoritative International Living’s Quality of Life Index retains Malta as the best place to live with the best climate within the European Union. It is also one of the more affordable destinations with reasonable tuition and living costs.

Its winter days enjoy long periods of sunshine and warm temperatures which make study conditions idyllic and which provide opportunities for you to spend your free time touring around to discover the natural and man-made beauty that adorn the island.

The summer months have their own magnetic climate that turns the islands into a playground by the sea. Swimming, water-sports, boat rides, sailing, cruises and sunbathing take over while social events on the beach, open-air festivals, street theatre, waterside concerts, cafes and restaurants provide you with entertainment and relaxation.

NSTS–International Academy provides general education programmes on an international level within the English speaking environment of Malta.

The British introduced their system of education close to a century ago which is followed to this very day. Malta therefore offers a five-year high school system followed by two years of senior high school to gain entry to a university. Teaching in the main is in English, even if Malta’s national language is Maltese, and international students may join any grade from age 11 years upwards.

Students must have a sufficiently high level of spoken English at a minimum of IELTS 5.0 or its equivalent to join the programme with profit and not disturb other students. They must therefore sit for a SKYPE interview in English between April and June to start their studies in October and be prepared to follow up to a 3 month long intensive course in English at the NSTS-English Language Institute as from early July if found not to have sufficient knowledge of English. HIGH SCHOOL

The NSTS – International Academy entered into convention with a number of locally registered High Schools to accept international students, subject to space availability, into their classrooms alongside Maltese students. The minimum acceptance age is of 11 years or completion of six years of junior schooling. The actual grade of admittance will depend upon the applicant student’s own school testimonial.

The course subjects at High School cover English, modern languages, mathematics, science, social and environmental studies, physical education and optional subjects, in addition to extracurricular activities that include various sports, gym, art, theatre and class activities to develop the personality.

The student will be expected to attend High School every day but may opt out from particular class subjects and do other studies instead. At the end of the scholastic year the student will be awarded a testimonial on the work done and progress achieved.

To successfully follow a good English course you need to have a fresh and clear mind every time you walk into class; you need to sleep comfortably and well. We recommend you read the following carefully and book the option that suits you best.

HOMESTAY / HOST FAMILY EXECUTIVE HOMESTAY / HOST FAMILY

Two characteristics of the Maltese that make you feel welcome to the home from the moment you arrive are their hospitality and close family ties.

NSTS officials personally visit and interview each family before selection and keep regular contact to ensure you have the best possible stay. You are invited to reciprocate kindness, consideration and a helping hand as you integrate into the family’s daily life. You should speak openly and friendlily on any special needs that will make your stay more comfortable. You will be hosted on full board. Dinner is likely to be a Mediterranean style meal with a heavy influence of Italian cuisine.

Families regularly host up to four English learners during peak periods. You will be sharing the house’s facilities and spaces with your fellow students and your host family.

Executive homestay / host families are categorised on the superior comfort and appearance of their bedrooms, which are more likely to have their own facilities, and the more involving social ambiance extended by the host family. Meals are more wholesome and varied and dinner-time becomes more of a social event with the family.
