Educating Joey Essex – ITV2 Every section of the documentary is opened and closed with the same title page and a voice over which produces a house style for the documentary and effectively incorporates all parts of the documentary to become one. This is followed by a quick recap of what is previously happened so that the viewer has a better memory of what is going on throughout. The use of a well known off screen presenter, Phillip Schofield, in educating Joey Essex captures the audience attention and provides them with background information behind what is happening on screen. The on screen presenter is also used to ask questions off screen which are then answered on screen so the viewer is able to understand what is going on throughout the documentary style TV series. At each new destination the names of where the shot is taking place is shown on screen which therefore informs there viewer of the destination of each shot. There is also a voiceover of information for each destination and clips of the local culture which again provides some background details and information. Between each destination a time lapse has been used to show the progress of the journey as they are travelling I think this works well within the documentary as it incorporates the viewer into clips as if they are also going on this journey. Educating Joey Essex – ITV2

Every section of the documentary is opened and closed with the same title page and a voice over which produces a house style for the documentary and effectively incorporates all parts of the documentary to become one.

Between each destination a time lapse has been used to show the progress of the journey as they are travelling I think this works well

within the documentary as it incorporates the viewer into clips as if they are also going on this journey.

Expert interviews have also been used in this documentary which allows the viewers to receive different view of the topic of each location and provide additional information. Background music used within the documentary is all relevant to the setting of the documentary, primarily African music because he is in Africa. Also the surrounding cultures are portrayed with the use of clips showing their local dances. One editing technique used in the documentary include a soft focus which fades in and out to draw attention to certain objects and props and this is also portrayed through the music with a corresponding fade in and out technique. This is used when information about different animals shown is told to the viewer.

An additional feature this documentary uses is having phone recorded clips throughout the documentary where Joey Essex is giving his opinion on what is going on within this section of the documentary. I feel this is an easy but powerful technique which gives the viewer and in look into personal thoughts and opinions.
