I hope you enjoyed your holiday and are ready for a New Year.

I want to give a special thanks to Culture Chairlady Luisa Potenza, for a great presentation on Leonardo Davinci, at our December Meeting.

The Nominating Committee will give their report of the 2018-2019 Slate of Officers at the January 8th General Meeting. Nominees will be accepted from the Floor. Please attend this important meeting.

The Installation of Officers will take place at the Recreation Center on March 5th, please plan to attend and support the Lodge Board.

Please consider attending the January Plenary Session in Deer Park, Saturday, January 27th, we would like to have a full table representing our Lodge, learning about the business workings of OSDIA. More information below.

Our Current and Future State Presidents are working hard to maintain and increase our Membership. We need your help to keep our Lodge numbers strong, it’s up to each of us.

I am looking forward to another great yard sale in May. We need more donations, so remember your Lodge, when you are disposing of unwanted items. See further down in the Newsletter for details.

PELLEGRINO TURRI, an ITALIAN inventor, invented a mechanical

typing machine, one of the first typewriters proven to have worked in

1801, for his blind lover, Countess Carolina Fantoni da Fivizzano. He

also invented carbon paper to provide the ink for his machine.

Although not much is known about the machine, some of the letters

written on it have survived.

4. WHAT IS THE NAME OF FRANK SINATRA’S FIRST HIT SONG?

Piazza Sant’Oronzo is an attractive public square, which boasts a cornucopia of architectural styles and is the result of centuries of craftsmanship. It takes its name from St. Orontius of Lecce, the city’s patron saint..

The square has two distinct sides. The north side is an open brick-paved area designed in the shape of an oval. Embedded into the floor is a mosaic of the city’s coat of arms, which features a wolf and a holm oak tree topped by a gold crown. Framing this section of the square are examples of merchant houses and fascist-style architecture. Today, these buildings house fashion outlets, fast-food joints and guesthouses.

The oval-shaped area is the setting for markets and concerts. Watch exhibitions of nativity scenes and browse artisan stalls during the yuletide Fiera dei Pupi.

Go to the south side of the square to see the Colonna di Sant’Oronzo, crowned by a statue of St. Orontius of Lecce. Next to here is the Seat of the Palace, a small palace raised in the 1500s that displays both Gothic and Renaissance aspects.

Connected to the palace is the Chiesa di San Marco, Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, notable for its typical Baroque façade. Here is important evidence of the existence of a colony of Venetian merchants who arrived in the city for commercial activities.

Don’t miss the chance to look down into the excavated ruins of the A.D. 2nd-century Roman Amphitheater, unearthed in the early 1900s. Imagine a time when Roman settlers would congregate here to watch flamboyant events, including gladiator fights. A large portion of the amphitheater remains buried beneath the square.

Piazza Sant’Oronzo sits amid Lecce’s old town and is a 5-minute walk from both Piazza del Duomo and the Holy Cross Cathedral. Cafés with outdoor terraces surround the square and provide an ideal vantage point for observing the contrasting buildings.

A combination of Roman ruins and Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance landmarks create an impressive architectural

landscape at this old town square.

SAL MINEO, born Salvatore Mineo Jr. January 10, 1939 in the Bronx New York.

Sadly, he died at the young age of 37, February 12, 1976.

The son of coffin makers Josephine (née Alvisi) and Salvatore Mineo Sr. He was of SICILIAN descent; his father was born in Italy, his mother is American born of Italian heritage. His mother enrolled him in dancing and acting school at an early age.

His first stage appearance was in the Tennessee Williams play, the Rose Tattoo, 1951. He also played opposite Yul Brynner in a stage version of The King and I. His breakthrough as an actor came in the role of a teenager in REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, with

James Dean and Natalie Wood. He also played with James Dean in the movie GIANT, a sprawling epic covering the life of a Texas cattle rancher Rock Hudson and his family and associates, with Liz Taylor. (these are 2 of my favorite movies, they are

both must see movies.) Sal Mineo was arriving home after a rehearsal on February 12, 1976, when he was stabbed to death in the alley behind his apartment building near the Sunset Strip, West Hollywood, California. Mineo was stabbed just once, not

repeatedly as first reported, but the knife blade struck his heart, leading to immediate and fatal internal bleeding. His remains were interred in the GATE OF HEAVEN CEMETERY in HAWTHORNE, NEW YORK.

FRANCIS VIGO, born Giuseppe Maria Francesco Vigo (December 13, 1747-March 22, 1836) was an Italian-American who aided the American forces during the Revolutionary War and helped found a public university in Vincennes, Indiana. Born in Mondovì, Italy, he served with the Spanish Army in New Orleans. Vigo often aided American forces during the Revolutionary War, most famously as an informant to George Rogers Clarke. Vigo was sent by Clark to Post Vincennes to inspect and report on the conditions there, but was captured by American Indians and turned over to Lt. Governor Henry Hamilton, who had recaptured Vincennes for the British Crown. In addition to his services as a patriot and spy, Vigo was the foremost financier of the American Revolution. in the Northwest. When Clark arrived with Continental promissory notes of paper, Vigo exchanged them evenly for hard coin. In 1801, Vigo petitioned the U.S. Congress for a donation of land to establish the Jefferson Academy in Vincennes. In 1806, Vigo was named one of the original trustees of the now renamed Vincennes University. From 1790 to 1810 he was a colonel in the Knox County Militia before resigning, citing age and infirmity. In 1818 Vigo County Indiana was established and named for him.

After he was royally feted during a visit to Terre Haute, the Vigo County seat, on July 4, 1834, Vigo revised his will to provide money to purchase a large bell for the Vigo County Courthouse. Francis Vigo died March 22, 1836, while living in the home of Jean Baptiste and Elizabeth (Martin) LaPlante, in Vincennes. It was not until 1875, that his estate was allowed payment for $8,016.00, the amount he had used to fund Clark’s campaign. This was the only expense the government would officially recognize. As Vigo had no blood-related descendants, however, the government only had to pay for the expenses requested in Vigo's will, the bell for the courthouse in Vigo County.

Dan was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. He found out he was going

to inherit a fortune when his sickly father died. He decided he needed a wife to share his life and fortune.

One night at an investment meeting, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took

his breath away. He said to her, “I may look like just an ordinary guy, but in just a year I’ll inherit 65 million dollars

when my father dies.”

Impressed, the woman obtained his business card and 3 weeks later, became his stepmother.

Women are so much better at financial planning then men.

MARI TOMASI-was born in Montpelier Canada, January 30, 1895. Her parents were from Turin. Her writings reflect the land of her

ancestors. Her first novel, THE DEEP GROW THE ROOTS,” set in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, it depicts the tragic effect of

fascist militarism on the life of two young peasants, Luigi and Nina. It won a coveted award as “one of the most outstanding first novels of

the year 1940.” Although a work of fiction, her best novel, “LIKE LESSER GODS,” recounts the life of granite workers in Barre, Vermont.

It reflects the early, rugged culture, the role of family loyalty, the power of work, and the resiliency of religious faith of granite workers,

who are descendants of generations of stone carvers from Italy. She effectively dramatizes daily routines via sample language that

displays a poetic touch.

She also edited the Vermont State Welfare magazine, and three volumes of Vermont: Its Government. In December 1949 she was

appointed to the Vermont House of Representatives to complete the term of Fred Gleason, who had died. Her term ended in January

1951.

She never married, but lived at her family home at 63 Barre Street until she died of cancer on November 10, 1965. Her papers are on

file with the University of Vermont.

Dan woke up with a huge hangover after attending his company's Christmas Party. Dan is not normally a drinker, but the drinks didn't taste like alcohol at all.

He didn't even remember how he got home from the party. As bad as he was feeling, he wondered if he did something wrong.

Dan had to force himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he saw were a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table.

Next to them, was a single red rose!! Dan sat up and saw his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. He looked around the room and saw that it was in perfect

order, spotlessly clean; He took the aspirins but cringed when he saw a huge black eye staring back at him in the bathroom mirror.

Then he noticed a note hanging on the corner of the mirror written in red with little hearts on it and a kiss mark from his wife in lipstick:

"Honey, breakfast is on the stove. I left early to get groceries to make you your favorite dinner tonight. I love you, darling!

He stumbled to the kitchen and sure enough, there was a hot breakfast, steaming hot coffee, and the morning newspaper.

His 16 year old son was also at the table, eating. Dan asks, "Son... What happened last night?"

"Well, you came home after 3 a.m., drunk and out of your mind You fell over the coffee table and broke it, and then you puked in the hallway,

and got that black eye when you ran into the door."

Confused, he asked his son, "So, why is everything in such perfect order and so clean? I have a rose and breakfast is on the table waiting for me??"

His son replies, "Oh THAT... Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you screamed....

"Leave me alone, I'm married!!"
