L ast week I was contacted by two young locals who had been shortlisted for the ‘Best Job in the

World’ competition.Mia Warren explained that the competition for six different positions had generated

over 600 000 applications from across the world, which the organisers had shortlisted down to 150.Wow, being a judge must have been one tough gig – so I could see why Mia was so pleased.I had a look at the individual categories to see how many Australians had made the cut. On average about two to three per category, 17 in total, so when I found out Jake Philpott from Mooloolah had been shortlisted as well – I got thinking a bit more about the statistics.

It is pretty cool that they are the only two Sunshine Coasters chosen, and after a bit more chatting with Mia I discovered that both she and Jake had gone to Beerwah High; Jake was in a higher grade and had known Mia’s brother.So two former Beerwah High students out of a total of only 17 - hang on this means that almost 12 per cent of the successful Australian candidates came from our very own back yard! I always say we are definitely an area made up of outstanding individuals – so I say on behalf of us all – great job guys, good luck and I know that your family and friends and the rest of your community will be hoping you both go the whole way!

Just as we went to print last week, we received the news that local stalwart, Nev Anning had passed away. Nev who turned 96 last November, was well known and respected, particularly in the Beerwah and Peachester communities, and in 2011 he was honoured with the naming of the new overpass bridge at Beerwah as the Nev Anning Bridge.Nev moved from Wynnum in Brisbane with his family to the Sunshine Coast as a teenager and lived a very full life in our hinterland area. He has left a huge legacy to so many parts of our community including the Beerwah – Peachester RSL Sub-Branch, the Maleny Rotary, the Caboolture Show Society, the Peachester History Committee and the Paint Horse Association.From an early age Nev immersed himself in the Beerwah and Peachester communities. In 1941 Nev was shipped to Singapore and sadly became a prisoner of war and was there for 3½ years. It was during his time at Changi that he worked on the construction of the aerodrome and also in the nail factory. Nev was a true survivor, he returned to Australia in September 1945.

Upon his return home, he met his lovely wife Cynthia and returned to life as a tree cutter. He then became a farm hand who progressed into a skilled and productive builder, and then a business man running a chicken abattoir.Even in retirement he achieved much – throughout his life his ‘never quit attitude’ continued to shine through.He is survived by his wife, Cynthia, and his children, Susan, Kay, Janis, Ronald and Helen together with 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Nev was an amazing man and as I know many in our community would like to pay tribute to him, we will include these tributes in next week’s edition.

CCTV is on the Chamber’s agendaGlasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce are concerned as to what they see as an increasing level of crime faced by the small business owners in each of the local townships over the past 12 months.Chamber President, Bob McLean said many of our local business owners who are already doing it tough – believe that it is important to reduce the amount of anti-social behaviour like graffiti and break-ins, and they see the use of CCTV technology as a way of keeping our towns safe.The Chamber recently formed a sub-committee including Terry Morrow from Landsborough Pub and bottleshop, David Coultis from Mellum Munchies, Beerwah Locksmith Adrian Korst, Rick Gazzard from Beerwah Hotel and bottleshops, and Bob McLean from Social Influence Consulting Group to work on the issue.“A number of the sub-committee members have already installed significant CCTV networks and other systems to protect their premises, and customers,” said Terry Morrow. “Although effective, an integrated system would maximise the benefits.”“The group believe a partnership between all levels of government and the chamber to support and resource the initiative would deliver a clear message on unacceptable behaviour and in turn reduce its impact,” added Bob McLean.The chamber have already raised the issue with our local Councillors and state members – and last week the group were able to raise their concerns with the LNP candidate for Fisher Mal Brough when they engaged in a street walk, meeting with business owners who were victims

of property damage and break-ins over the Easter weekend.Mal has assured the group that if a coalition government wins the next election, Tony Abbott has agreed that funds will be made available for monitoring.Mal identified that the locations he believed required this technology were Landsborough, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and on the coast, at Mooloolaba.“Currently the Glasshouse Country Communities are serviced by a number of individual private and public CCTV surveillance however if these services were integrated for monitoring they would be more effective,” Terry Morrow said.“This partnership would benefit all residents, and lower the level of risk contributions when insurance premiums are calculated.“The chamber's goal is to have the risk assessed as low as possible for all five post codes in Glasshouse Country,” he said.

Glass House’s own champion surf lifesaver By Greg Brown

GCNews regularly brings you stories on the achievements of our talented local sportspeople.However, being a hinterland community newspaper, it is not very often we get the chance to feature someone’s efforts in a purely coastal sport like surf lifesaving.So it is with great excitement that we are able to introduce you to Mitchell Harvey – our very own Australian champion surf lifesaver.Mitchell, 17, from Glass House Mountains, won a gold medal in the Open Lifesaver Relay at the recent Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships held at Kirra beach on the Gold Coast.Starting Nippers at the age of 13 with the Maroochydore club, Mitchell says that he earned his Bronze Medallion and now loves the volunteer shifts at the club on weekends, and has been involved in many rescues during that time.“Surf lifesaving is a great way for me to keep fit and active and I’ve made some great friends over the years.“It gives me an opportunity to give back to the community whilst improving my surf, beach and first aid skills,” he said.Being an avid all-round sports-lover, he has always liked athletics and has represented his school at local, district and regional levels.Mitchell was the Open District School Athletics Champion and Beerwah State High School Age Champion (swimming and athletics) in 2012. Mitchell completed the Athletics Excellence

Program in Years 8, 9 and 10, which he believes has contributed to his achievements in both track and beach events.But it’s surf lifesaving where Mitchell has really hit his straps. The Australian Championships was only the third competition he had competed in – so to come away with a gold medal is a fantastic effort.

His parents, Michael and Leanne Harvey, are very proud of his achievements.“None of our family has ever been involved in surf lifesaving – so we don’t know where he gets it from,” said Leanne.“We originally wanted the kids to gain better water and surf safety skills; and learn how to read and ride the waves. Mitchell has a natural ability for any sport but I suppose living in the hinterland, surf lifesaving is not something everyone considers for their kids.“Michael and I are extremely proud of Mitchell and his achievements. As a new competitor to surf lifesaving carnivals, Mitchell had no expectations other to achieve a personal best but coming away with a gold medal is fantastic and has strengthened his desire to continue in this sport,” said Leanne.Leanne thinks surf lifesaving is a great choice for other parents to consider.“I would very much encourage both parents and children to join surf lifesaving. As a volunteer, you only need to dedicate a few hours one day per month (over the season) to do patrols and your club will teach you the skills you need to save a life.“I have found that, for Mitchell, the sport has expanded his social and athletic skills and achievements, stepping him out of his comfort zone and trying something new. As well, he’s made lots of new friends and he feels enjoyment and accomplishment when saving someone life.”

New entertainment combines with traditional fun at the Maleny ShowEveryone who comes along to the show has a few favourites ‘must dos’ each year, and when you head to the 76th Maleny Agricultural Show you won’t be disappointed, they will once again all be here, the spectacle of the Grand Parade, the Ute Show, the ring events, the rodeo, the wood chop, side show alley, Dagwood dogs and fairy floss.

However there is plenty of excitement surrounding the new headline act this year including Eljay and his team of motor cycle and push bike trials doing extreme jumps and daredevil acts.Anticipation is also

high for the ‘Crack Up Sisters’ who are heading back to Maleny with new performances to suit the whole family.Friday night, will see Brisbane band, Golden Child performing live around the Cattleman’s Bar, and on Saturday night you can catch Paul McKenna performing live with his well-known classic rock.Something exciting for all the kids, this year the Silly Billies are heading to the show, both days for some fantastic children’s entertainment and workshops. These guys are fast making a huge name for themselves in the children’s entertainment world, and it’s a huge thrill to have them here at Maleny.Hot on the heels of this year’s My Kitchen Rules phenomenon we are also introducing new this year, our novice cookery judges competition, where anyone can join in on Friday, up in the main pavilion, and try their hand at judging cakes and cookery under the expert guidance of our cookery judges.You never know, you might discover a hidden talent for picking a prize sponge cake.Also this year for those of you who like to dress up to come to the show, there will be prizes on offer for the fashions on the field. Go Jocelyn goBeerburrum local Jocelyn Evans has recently been advised that she has been chosen as part of Team Australia to participate in the swimming team for the Special Olympics – Asia Pacific games to be held in Newcastle in December this year.Jocelyn’s very proud mum Deb explained that part of the criteria for being chosen to be part of the team is based on the individual swimmer’s commitment to their swimming and the level of ongoing training they are prepared to undertake before the games.While Jocelyn has not yet been advised which events she will swim in, her personal favourites are the 200m breaststroke and the 100m fly, she also likes the individual medley events.Jocelyn has a diverse training schedule which she enjoys, including swimming training, cycling, boxing, cardio, walk / jog up Wild Horse Mountain wearing weights on her back and then some pilates when she gets to the top.There will be many locals cheering Jocelyn with her training this year – who will be keen to see her representing ‘Team Australia’.

Beerwah becomes RV ready By Lea Parkes

While many of us hear about the tourism phenomenon of the Grey nomads we don’t generally see too many of them staying locally.But for Beerwah locals and regulars at the Beerwah RSL, this is all about to change. The RSL Sub-Branch are set to open their own Recreational Vehicle (RV) overnight site on what used to be their lawn bowls area at Beerwah.President of the Chamber of Commerce, Bob McLean’s association with Ken Kipping from the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) encouraged him to find a way to create an overnight stop for the ‘Leave No Trace’ certified RVs in our local community.Bob raised the proposal with the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch President at the time, John Rouhan, who then worked it through with the Sub-branch committee to make it happen.

Bob said over the past 18 months, with the support of Hanson Quarries and Community Recycling Inc, work has been undertaken to lay 100mm of road base over the synthetic green making it suitable for small RVs to use for overnight stops.RSL Sub-branch President Gavin Smith said they are now at the stage of installing signage and are looking forward to getting it all underway.Community Recycling Inc happily agreed to pay up to $2,500.00 towards the work required as they saw it as an initiative that would benefit the broader community.The RV stop is only for overnight stays and can’t be used during the day. The facility will be used by only small vehicles and those using the spot will pay a $10.00 donation to the RSL Sub-branch.Larger RVs that come into Beerwah can already stay at the Beerwah Sportsground which along with the caravan park at Gowinta Farms is equipped with a ‘dump point’ for dumping vehicle waste.

Starting education youngOne young attendee at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Beerwah and the march at Glass House Mountains brought a smile to many faces.Conondale locals Jane Kindleysides and Anthony Beattie were proud for their son Jack to participate in his first ANZAC Day, dressed in his army camos and proudly displaying his great grandfathers' and grandfathers’ service medals.ANZAC Day is an important occasion for the couple, who met in Kokoda. That had both travelled there with their younger brothers to walk in the footsteps of our great Australian heroes.Jane said to prepare for the Kokoda Track she did all her training around the Glass House Mountains tracks. “I climbed Mount Beerwah and Ngungun over and over until I was fit enough to head over,” she said.“Kokoda was a life changing experience for our group of 18. Over there we laughed, we cried, we endured, we had such mateship and we conquered Kokoda together.“If it wasn't for the sacrifices of the diggers in Kokoda, Anthony and I wouldn't have met and Jack wouldn't be here today,” Jane said.

History has repeated itself, as Anthony's parents also met in PNG. Arthur and Judy moved from Australia in their younger years for work with Anthony, spending several years living over there when he was a child.Jane has worked at the RSL nursing home at Caboolture for 15 years, and on Anzac Day, she and her colleague Wendy would start at 3.00am to get the Diggers ready for the Dawn service.“I have been so privileged in my job over the years to be able to sit and chat to our Diggers, and hear their stories of their time spent in war,”

she said.“The stories of the POW's in particular were heartbreaking. It is sad all these years since, that the war still affects our service men and women so deeply.”“This was the first year I haven't

been in to work to get the Diggers up for the Dawn service, but I had a very special day with Jack who will be taught just how important it is for his generation to remember the courage and sacrifice of our past and present Anzacs,” Jane said.

Ranger Jake is in the parkBy Greg BrownJake Philpott of Mooloolah’s goal in life is to become a Park Ranger – that is his dream job and he has been working towards it for quite a few years; studying, gaining experience and now working as a supervisor in local land conservation projects with Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare.So when he saw the Tourism Australia’s international competition to become a Park Ranger for six months, he knew that it could be his big break.If he could win the six month celebrity opportunity, it would no doubt be a great foot in the door to becoming a career park ranger.Jake’s passion for being a Park Ranger was clear when GCNews caught up with him last week at the Twinnies Pelican and Sea Bird Rescue Service.Since Jake was short listed for the ‘Best Job in the World – Park Ranger’ he has been busy creating a folio of people that would endorse him as being ‘perfect for the job’.After originally meeting the Twinnies and their team a couple of years ago at the first tree planting day at their Steve Irwin Way Landsborough bird rescue centre, he thought this might be a great place to start.The girls were so happy to support Jake and show the rest of our community why he would be perfect for the job, that they organised a Family Fun Day at their facility.Throughout the day, the girls showed visitors around their clinic and Jake was kept busy doing tours of the outside rehabilitation enclosures – showcasing his enthusiasm and his people-skills, all of which would make him a great choice for the Park Ranger job.Jan Kesby, the co-ordinator for Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare reckons that Jake definitely has a passion for the environment, which shines through with everything he does.We also spoke to Jack’s mum Debbie and she is unquestionably Jake’s biggest fan. She believes the job should be definitely his. Maybe the competition judges would think she is a little biased, but having met Jake, we think the judges would be mad not to choose him as the best person for the job.

Outback Mia By Lea ParkesFormer Beerwah High student Mia Warren loves her job working in aged care at ‘Embracia in Glasshouse Country’ - but after hearing about the Best Job in the World Campaign she couldn’t resist the idea of entering the Outback Adventurer category.While Mia hasn’t yet had the opportunity to travel through the outback she is very keen to do so and is a huge advocate for people coming to visit and travel through Australia.Mia is really interested in Aboriginal Culture having lived in Murgon near the Cherbourg Aboriginal community when she was at primary school.Part of the application process for the job involved making a 30 second video outlining why you are the best person for the job.Mia explained that it only took three days to put the clip together but she spent plenty of time planning for how to clearly get her message across in such a short time.Living here certainly gave her some spectacular locations to choose from to show off her ‘local backyard’ including Gardeners Falls at Maleny and the Glass House Mountains.Now that she has been shortlisted, she now needs to be able to generate media interest and enlist celebrity support to endorse what she is doing.Last week she managed to get Radio Presenter Jamie Dunn (and former sunshine coaster) to get behind her cause – she was rapt when he invited her into the studio to be interviewed.Mia is keen to keep locals up-to-date on how she is going so she has set up a Facebook page and twitter to make it easier. Sue rewarded for hard work at Glenview SchoolThe P&C awarded an Honorary Life Membership to the P&C to Sue Schafer at the AGM last term. This was to thank her for her incredible support over the last eight years. She has never missed a P&C meeting and was an invaluable member of the committee, running the clothing store and always willing to lend a hand. Members of the community donated funds at the Christmas Carols last year and with this we commissioned a painting of a Crimson Rosella for Sue which has an engraved plaque which reads ‘Love Glenview Community’.

He showed us uses for different gadgets to make life easier for those of us whose hands don’t work so well any more. Some members took advantage of the chance to purchase a gadget or two.A couple of members spoke about some of the highlights of their visit to the Nambour Garden Club for their friendship day. Mooloolah Performing Our Arts OffContributed by Jean CroweOnce again Mooloolah well and truly performed its arts off with some pretty incredible performances from some pretty amazing local artists back in February. The night started with a kid’s drumming workshop held by Pete Foerster who also hosted the night. Special guest and drum teacher extraordinaire Herb joined in with his ‘Herbinator’. It was very noisy but the kids had a blast.The breathtaking operatic sounds of Louise Kennedy-Richardson and acoustic gymnastics of solo guitarist and singer Tayg Pomfret stunned us all into silence, while the rock chick vibe of Sonia and her Sonics had us all up dancing. So much local talent in one evening made it a night to remember.

Our next event The Mooloolah Hula is coming up really soon, Saturday, May 18. This will kick off with a Ukulele workshop from 5.30pm - 6.00pm for anyone who would like to join in (byo ukulele).Feature artists for the night are Uke Crazy People and The Bamboo Rockets. This will be a fun family friendly evening with a Mooloola Hula theme so come dressed in best Hawaiian get up to win a prize. And enjoy some pizza and punch from the kitchen.The Mooloolah Hula runs from 5.30pm – 9.30pm at the Mooloolah Public Hall, Bray Road. By Mike Turner, Beerwah High School ChaplainAll too often we hear negative stories about young people on the news and current affair shows, but in reality this involves a relative minority of our young people, leaving the vast majority who are not involved in these antisocial behaviours unacknowledged for their values and hard work.Here is one example of what I am talking about… On Saturday, March 23 four teams of young people from Beerwah State High School and Glasshouse Country Baptist Church took the time to invest into the life of somebody else in a very practical way.Early that morning they assembled for a safety briefing then headed out in their teams to four homes owned by some of our older locals who needed a hand with weeding and general gardening. Despite the hot and humid conditions, the students worked hard and left the four home-owners impressed and very grateful.This was a great opportunity for our youth to invest into our local community. Due to the success of the day, we are planning to run this a

few times each year and give other young people a chance to get involved. It was great working on this project with youth pastor Mick Spann and some of the youth from Glasshouse Country Baptist Church.One of the people who helped behind the scenes with this project was Ann McQuay, Manager of Glasshouse Country Care.Ann said she was really excited about what these young people have done with this community project.“I think it is great because it brings the generations together, plus, because government funded services can’t meet all the needs of our aged community members, this project is a way that young people can help.“I’m looking forward to seeing future projects like this involving our local young people,” said Ann. It truly was a blessing to see these young people in action and Mick and I would like to congratulate their parents for a job well done in raising them. These young people were a credit to their families and schools.

Glasshouse authors 60th Wedding AnniversaryLocal authors Kate and John Wright recently visited Sydney for the celebration of their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. Having met in 1952 and married in 1953, on the Isle of Wight, UK, they are responsible for two sons and, now, six grandchildren.This family group, with attendant spouses and in-laws, arranged an event that included a church thanksgiving service, a road-sign greetings card, two jade elephants representing longevity and fidelity, together with letters of congratulation from the Governor General and Queen Elizabeth. Included was a magnificent dinner followed by an enormous cake with a photograph of the (still) happy couple.One grandson, a civil engineer who resides in

Canada, joined the festivities by speaking on satellite video link from Ottawa.Now back home in Glasshouse, Kate and John have resumed their local activities as writers, tutors and readers.

Timber WaggonThe bullock powered timber waggon, once owned by William Smith Burgess of Bankfoot House, has been exposed to the weather and has sat unused in the grounds of the property for over 80 years. Keith Pennell, a volunteer at Bankfoot House, has been carrying out a time-consuming preservation project to ensure the waggon’s metal hardware and timber frame survive for generations to come. Keith is well advanced with this project.In addition, the waggon’s heavy timber wheels need major restoration to counter the effects of white ants and sun damage. Local Wheelwright, Steve Ralph, has been engaged to restore the wheels and Steve is keen to ensure appropriate timbers are used when replacing any wheel components. For example he has selected the timber Blue Gum to replace the felloes, i.e. those circular sections of the wheel adjoining the metal tyre.When the damaged wheels were removed, the forge marks on the axles revealed the year of axle manufacture and the name of the maker. This was a great discovery as the age of the waggon was largely unknown. The front axles were dated 1907 and 1908, whilst the rear axles appear to have been replaced in 1926. All axles were made in England.Once fully restored, the waggon will represent a fine example of a bullock-drawn working vehicle from the days before motor trucks and tractors.

In short, Malware is why computer security is so important! To avoid Malware attacks, ensure your Internet Security Program is up to date and functioning. Also keep Windows/Apple software up to date; many updates are intended to plug software holes that can be exploited by scammers. If you have basic protection, use a Malware protection program as well. Do not however run two Internet Security programs side by side; the programs will normally disrupt each other and may result in very poor performance. A particularly nasty Malware fraud is still causing problems at the moment. This is the AFP (Australian Federal Police) Scam. It has several forms and can be triggered in different ways but the result is pretty standard; your computer locks up and you are requested to pay a fine to unlock your computer. The celebrations will take place on Friday, May 24 from 8.30am until 11.00am.All children, along with their parents, carers and families are invited to come and join in the celebrations.‘Some of the fun activities on offer include a farm animal petting zoo, a jumping castle, use of class Apple devices such as iPads and iPods, plus lots more.Representatives from Beerwah Library will also be at the school participating in the event and conducting fun activities with the children.Every child who attends will receive a free show bag and balloon. Here come the drumsSalaka means sharing in the Ga language of Ghana so when a trio of African drummers by the same name visited Glasshouse Country Christian College, the students were in for a treat.GCCC students were entranced as the lively Salaka trio danced, drummed and shared stories about their culture and country.

The lead performer explained how his village in Ghana didn’t have the modern conveniences Australians take for granted, so drums were a big part of their culture. Drums are used for communications, celebrations and keeping fit. “In Ghana, we don’t need gyms; if you want good abs you play this drum and if you want guns like mine you play that drum,” he said as he pointed to the different drums.The drummer went on to explain how his village didn’t have running water or electricity but it was the mention of no Play Stations that had the students gasping in astonishment.After the story telling and performances, students were given drums and learned how to beat them in rhythm. When 200 students are each given a drum, there is no telling what could happen, but the resulting noise was surprisingly enjoyable.

Big smiles at Mooloolah State SchoolThere was plenty of reason for Ken Truscott of Mooloolah to smile recently. School Captains Zac O’Brien and Georgia Gillespie presented Ken with a cheque for $500.00 for winning the Mooloolah State School Cowpat Lotto!Ken said it was all really easy! He walked into his local Mooloolah Butchers to get some great meat for dinner, was happy to spend $5.00 to support his local school, selected his special number, and then took the phone call to let him know he’d been the lucky winner! The Cowpat Lotto was conducted by the Mooloolah P&C and was made possible by the generous support of local businesses. The police should regularly patrol the overpass bridge for young people sitting and congregating and deliberately throwing drinks and food on the steps, hoping someone will slip and break a leg.The station mistress often cleans the steps, but she shouldn’t have to. Is there no protection for the local community against these signs being put up willy-nilly months before the actual date? No wonder people get turned off by elections.

A way forwardIn answer to the comments on bike ways, or the lack of them, in the last edition of GCNews how about this? All bikes should be registered, with a fee payable each year, the same as us motorists. Then the money will be available to build the bike ways.There will be no need for road closures so that bikes can race. No three abreast riders, no fear of getting hit by a motorist, life will be fair to all. It's just a thought, but I bet all cyclists will find fault.

Saving on phone call chargesI read James Aitken's recent letter regarding saving cash on calls and whilst a great saving, for those with a busy household, the savings can be limited given the higher call rate.Stand by... technical talk ahead...Our solution was to set up VOIP (Voice Over IP). This uses your ADSL/Internet connection to make phone calls.The setup for us includes cordless phones, a traditional line, ADSL and of course the VOIP. What this means is that we retain a standard eight digit phone number for inbound but all outbound calls are via VOIP.One reason we didn't go with a Naked ADSL plan and use mobiles, is that the inbound cost of calls is high for anyone wanting to talk to us (mobile rates), with our solution friends and family calling in get the standard phone rates, great for them too!In terms of savings with VOIP, we were paying

Telstra in excess of $100.00 a month with national calls etc. Now with just 18c flat rate for any standard call nationally we have cut over $40.00 a month on our phone bill.To get configured for all of this isn't as complicated as it seems either, so long as you've got an internet connection and are willing to do some reading up on plans etc. Indeed you can cut over whilst maintaining your current normal phone contract (which we have retained, so still have phones in a power cut).Personally, we went with Internode. Their Nodephone (VOIP), Nodeline (Alternate ‘copper’ to Telstra) and Easy Reach plans all bundle together to give a further $10.00 a month discount.It's almost too good to be true when you do the maths, but still a wonderful way to use new technology.

What does it say of our society?We can torture and disembowel animals whilst fully conscious en mass in slaughterhouses and this is legal and totally acceptable but we are outraged when this happens outside of these walls? No animal ever deserves to be tortured or killed, regardless of whether this is for food, clothes or ‘fun’. The recent slayings of cattle and alpacas in our region are just a snapshot of what goes on behind abattoir walls. Until we recognise that animals are sentient beings who feel the same pain, fear and terror we do, we will continue to turn a blind eye to the holocaust that is animal cruelty.

Dedicated Wildlife CarersRecently I was privileged to meet two very special people who dedicate their time to caring for injured wildlife. Cathy and Nigel Cope work for Wildcare Australia and approached me for a suitable site for a ‘soft release’ of a young possum which had been in their care for eight months. The tiny possum came to them following a road kill, and in care had to be fed every two hours.Cathy and Nigel often care for more than one animal at any one time. These little creatures are given names and have to be taught to fend for themselves in the wild. Isaac came to our place in his own nest box in a large cage and was left near a suitable tree to get accustomed to a new area. Another nest box was placed in a nearby tree with a rope suitably attached to his cage tree.A week later an open cage door left Isaac free to leave captivity and happily he felt no need to return.

ANZAC DayANZAC Day, held on April 25 each year, is a time to pay our respects to all those who have served in military operations throughout our nation’s history and acknowledge those who currently serve in the military today. Anzac Day is observed across Queensland with commemorative dawn services, and parades of ex-servicemen and women and uniformed Australian Defence Force members. With a very wide spread electorate to cover, a lot of planning goes into my Anzac Day schedule so that I can visit and participate in as many Glass House services as possible. This year I am pleased to say I joined services in Palmwoods, Wamuran, Witta and Glass House Mountains. As each ANZAC Day passes, I am reminded how lucky we are to call Australia home, particularly those of us lucky enough to live in Queensland.

The aim of the campaign is to encourage more Australians to take some time out and visit the Sunshine Coast. This will be both an online and TV campaign that will promote our enviable winter weather. Local businesses urged to get involvedTough Mudder Australasia has put the call out to local goods and services providers to get involved in the Sunshine Coast event on August 17 and 18. Tough Mudder executives recently visited the region meeting with key stakeholders and speaking to local tourism businesses and other suppliers.The expression of interest is the perfect chance for local businesses to capitalise on the upcoming tourism event.Suppliers sought by Tough Mudder include the following list: water, mobile offices, marquees, fencing and security, skip bins, portable toilets, generators, portable ATMs, sound equipment, ice, lights, plastic cups and food and drink vendors.The event is generating a huge buzz around the Sunshine Coast with the economic and tourism benefits set to be a huge windfall for the entire region.Tough Mudder is contracted to be held in Caloundra for the next five years with the possibility of two events per year from 2014 onwards. This will inject millions in to the Sunshine Coast economy.While the actual venue was only recently announced, I’m told several places in Caloundra have received accommodation enquiries and have taking bookings. More than 13,600 people have already signed up with organisers expecting 18,000 competitors from across Australia on Saturday, August 17 and 4,500 on Sunday, August 18 with spectator attendees expected to be over and above participant numbers. Recently I celebrated a personal milestone as a high school chaplain – having been in the job for 10 years! As the date approached, my excitement grew because it meant so much to me. Not only did it bring a real sense of personal satisfaction that I had stuck at something for a decade, but it made me think about all the things I had gone through in that time – people I had met, kids I had worked with, events I had run and experiences that I’d had. I also reflected on the personal side of the job – how I have grown and matured as a person over that time and hurdles that I have overcome.I have found that reflecting back on my life every now and then is very beneficial to me. Let me explain… I guess the first thing that comes to mind is that in life we get so busy with work and family life, household jobs, paying the bills, social obligations, sports and clubs etc that time can absolutely fly by. I have had months where I get to the end of it and I go Oh, my! Where did April go? To stop and reflect is somewhat of a handbrake. It enables us to consider what we have done, where we are at and it can help us make sense of things and process what has been going on – good, bad and otherwise.The second benefit of reflecting back is that so often we only remember the mistakes we have

made or the negative things that have happened. We forget all the great success stories and stuff we have achieved. We can then encourage ourselves with these stories. It can be a great confidence booster.There are a number of occasions in the bible where at significant moments God told the people to build a special pile of stones. He told them to do this to help future generations be reminded of how he had helped them e.g. Israelites crossing the Jordan River and coming into the Promised Land (Joshua Chapter 4). This is the best part about reflecting on milestones and stuff in our lives… If we are open to it, I believe we can see how God has been with us through the ups and downs of life. When I look back on the last 10 years – that is the most fulfilling part indeed. Realising that God has been with me the whole time, providing for me and my family and helping me in the tough times.God bless you and your family.

Strong yields attracting investors: REIQMore than 150 postcodes across Queensland have recorded gross rental yields of 5 per cent or more, according to the latest Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) data.The REIQ December quarter gross rental yield report, released recently, found that yields were particularly firm in mining regions as well as areas which offered affordable housing.“Our property market has turned a corner over the past six months, and these robust yields reflect that sales prices had yet to fully rebound in the December quarter last year but rents had definitely increased,” Mr Anton Kardash CEO of the REIQ said.“This year, there continues to be strong demand for rental properties from tenants, which in turn is driving activity from investors. “REIQ analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) housing finance data found that the number of investors in the Queensland property market in February had increased more than 10 per cent compared to January this year.”The REIQ gross rental yields use weighted median rents and sale prices to derive yields, which is the annual income earned from a tenanted property divided by the purchase price.They are referred to as gross yields as they do not take into account costs associated with the original purchase or the ongoing costs of owning an investment property such as mortgage repayments.“Our gross rental yields are also classed as short-term yields as they reflect current pricings,” Mr Kardash said.“However, if you hold your investment property over the long-term - which of course is always advisable - then the yield improves given rental income has increased but your original purchase price had stayed the same.”The figures locally are Glasshouse Mountains 5.1 per cent; Beerwah 5.0 per cent; Landsborough 4.2 per cent; Glenview 3.9 per cent.

Patch progressBit by bit, little by little, it is all coming together.It has been a mammoth task trying to get back into a bit of self-sufficiency and we are still a very long way off from our final vision.Firstly, we have the vegie patch up and running and the first flush of produce is being harvested … by both us and the caterpillars.It never ceases to amaze me, how the white cabbage butterfly can suddenly appear as soon as you plant any of the brassica plants. It then baffles me once again at how quickly the caterpillars can decimate everything in sight. So, whilst we have made a start, it has been with the usual trials that I thought, just maybe, I could bypass this once.Another part to our journey to self-sufficiency is the chook house. After the children were given 16 chickens at Christmas, and travelling seven hours in a car with them to get them home, the chook house became high priority.With ample space and a load of materials left over from construction sites, we went all out to build a snake, vermin, bird and fox-proof pen. The result was well worth the effort, even if it didn’t feel that way during construction when our hands and backs were aching.Finally, we are nearing the completion of our cattle yards, which has given me a very real appreciation for our forefathers who built these without chainsaws and generators.We at least had the chainsaw, but no generator to power a drill … so there has been some great workout opportunities drilling the holes during this construction. We now eagerly await the chance to buy some cattle.Initially when I began to write this column I had thought that we had not achieved a great deal in the seven months since settling into our new place, but upon reflection, I am enormously proud!My husband and I have both been working full-time, but using our weekends and any other spare moment to get these things done. I’d best not forget also, that our children have pitched in whenever they are not off building their own contraptions! To be honest, the hardest bit of it all for us, is to tame our million and one ideas, and take it bit by bit, little by little …Until next month in Get up and Grow!

Mens - Final on April 28. The boys played the final match at Pacific Harbour against the team from Woodford and came away with a great win. This win is the culmination of many games played over many weeks against all the clubs in the zone, so we send our heartiest congratulations to the team on being Glasshouse Mountains Zone Masters Pennant Champions for 2013.Ladies - We are truly back in the swing of things with some beautiful weather to draw out the players. We had 60 girls compete in a 2 Ball Aggregate Stableford for trophies kindly donated by Lyn Nichols and Fay Raven. The winners on the day were great mates Heather Henn and Brenda Briese who came in with a grand total of 66 points. Runners up were Deb Rutherford and Jen Kelly who scored 64 points. The 2nd hole proved to be elusive with no one hitting the green with their tee shot. Other NTPs were Karen Kemp on 5, Noelene Annakin on 16, and Jen Kelly took out the 18th. The ball rundown went to 56 points. Let’s hope this lovely weather keeps up, it’s a great time to be golfing.
