Naplan testing
For the information of parents of Years 3 and 5 students, NAPLAN testing will take place next week on Tuesday 15th, Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th May. It is important to note that this is just one test that provides schools and parents with a snapshot of a student’s ability and performance on a particular day at a particular time. If you are concerned about your child’s academic progress and would like more detailed, diagnostic information about your child, please make a time to see your child’s teacher or ask during our Student Led Conferences on Friday 19th July (this is a pupil free day set aside for interviews) . Don’t
wait for the NAPLAN report.
WALKATHON
2018
FLUORO
FLASH!!!
To raise funds towards resurfacing the weathered basketball court we are
holding our main fundraiser for the year. This year’s walkathon theme will be FLUORO FLASH. This event will take place on Tuesday 29th May from 9 – 11am. We encourage friends and relatives to sponsor their child to do up to 10 laps of a track through the Oliver’s Creek Reserve or to make a kind donation for participating in the activity. Children and teachers are encouraged to come dressed up in their favourite fluoro clothes and accessories. Depending on the weather, we will have a short parade in the morning of the 29th prior to making our way in to the reserve. Further information and sponsorship forms were sent home last week. If you did not receive this information please pop in to the office to collect another one. Let’s improve our school grounds further with a brand new
resurfaced basketball court!
Mother’s Day
On Tuesday we had our annual Mother’s Day stall. Thanks to all of the families who donated gifts, as well as the parents who gave up their time to assist in wrapping and
selling at the stall.
Tomorrow we hold our annual Mother’s Day breakfast and invite all students to bring their mums and grandmas along for a cup of tea and an egg and bacon roll. We ask for a
gold coin donation per breakfast to help us to cover costs.
We hope that all of our mums and grandmas have a very
special day on Sunday 13th May.

Welfare
CHILD SAFETY STANDARDS
In 2013, the Victorian Parliament held an Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and Other Non-Government Organisations, resulting in the Betrayal of Trust Report. The report found that more could be done to strengthen existing approaches to child safety. In response, the Victorian Government is phasing in child safe standards for organisations that work with children, including schools. Along with schools across Victoria we are now working to implement a stringent new set of child safe standards designed to protect children in our care. As a school we have implemented and written a new child safe policy and code of conduct in line with the new State Government legislation. These can now be found on our website. Please refer to these documents for more information. All schools must meet legal requirements for the
care, safety and welfare of students.
What are the standards?
The child safe standards require schools to consider all aspects of child safety and put measures in place to protect children
from all forms of abuse, including:
sexual or grooming offences
physical violence
serious emotional or psychological harm
serious neglect
There are seven child safe standards.
1. Strategies to embed an organisational culture of child
safety.
2. A child safety policy or statement of commitment to child
safety.
3. A child safety code of conduct.
4. School staff selection, supervision and management
practice for a child-safe environment.
5. Procedures for responding to and reporting allegations
of suspected child abuse.
6. Strategies to identify and reduce or remove risks of child
abuse.
7. Strategies to promote child empowerment and
participation
As Assistant Principal and as part of my welfare role I am also
Child Safety Officer. This means I oversee many of the child
safe standards and procedures and it is my role to look out for
all the students in our school to ensure that they are safe and
supported. At Tyabb Primary School we take child safety very
seriously and have made our commitment to this below.
At Tyabb Primary School our commitment to child safety is as follows:
Tyabb Primary School is committed to child safety
We want our children to be safe, happy and
empowered
We support, listen to and respect all children, as well as
our staff and volunteers
We have committed to the safety, participation and
empowerment of all children
We have zero tolerance of child abuse. All allegations and safety concerns will be treated very seriously and
consistently with our robust policies and procedures
We have legal and moral obligations to contact authorities when we are worried about a child’s safety,
which we follow rigorously
Our school is committed to preventing child abuse and identifying risks early, and removing and reducing these
risks
Our school has robust human resources and
recruitment practices for all staff and volunteers
Our school is committed to regularly training and
educating our staff and volunteers on child abuse risks
We support and respect all children, as well as our staff and volunteers. We are committed to the cultural safety of Aboriginal children, the cultural safety of children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, and to providing a safe environment for
children with a disability.
We have specific policies, procedures and training in place that support our leadership team, staff and
volunteers to achieve these commitments

Welfare
At Tyabb Primary School we also want you to know that:
Everyone connected to our school can help children be
safe
Keeping children safe is everyone’s responsibility at our
school
We have new procedures to respond to and report
complaints of any form of child abuse.
We want to ensure you know how we are keeping your children safe at school so please read our policy and
code of conduct on our website
Staff members have already received training and support to understand and carry out their
responsibilities under the standards.
Unsupervised contractors, new emergency teachers, new parent helpers and parents attending camp will be asked to sign our code of conduct and read our child safe policy before they begin working or volunteering at
our school
You can read our Child Safe Policy and code of conduct on our website and you can learn more about Victoria’s new child safe standards from a video on the Victorian Registration & Qualifications Authority website http://www.vrqa.vic.gov.au/childsafe/Pages/default.html
Our World Vision Sponsor Child Throughout the year we have a couple of gold coin donation days that are to raise money for our sponsor child through the World Vision organisation. I thought it would be nice for the
community to know a little bit about our sponsor child.
My name is Rishan Shushay and I am 9 years old. I was born on 22 October 2008. I live in Medebay Zana Project in Ethiopia.
Below are some pictures and statements from the people who have benefitted from sponsorship living in the same region as Rishan.
“We travelled far to get water and got ill because the water was unclean. Now, my friends and I get clean water in our neighbourhood.” – Mahlet, 12 years old (third from left)
“We received training through World Vision on how to cultivate different vegetables to feed our children and sell for income. Our feeding habits improved and we are in a good health. We also making money by selling some of our vegetable at the nearby market,’’ says Tsige.
CANTEEN REMINDER
Just a reminder that the daily spend limit at the canteen for snacks (not lunch orders) is $2. Please be aware of this and please also speak to your child about this limit. Where possible, please only send $2 with your child to school as this helps us monitor this. The canteen would also like to remind parents and students that our pupils are not to share food items, purchase items for other children or give change to
other students to spend at the canteen. Thankyou!
Families requiring duplicate school reports.
We are updating our records with regards to families requiring a duplicate school report in both June and December. If your family requires a duplicate report please make contact with the office and
supply an up-to-date address that this report can be sent.

Nights Of Reading Competition
Prize announcement!
Our night’s of reading competition is well under way with many
grades trying very hard to reach the highest average nights of
reading.
We will be awarding a class library of brand new books in the Junior,
Middle and Senior schools.
We already have a number of children who have reached over 75
nights of reading and are well on their way to getting their individual
awards from Mrs Howden or Ms Grinsted once they reach 100
nights.
Parents, your children need your help to ensure that they are
reading most days of the week. This is a crucial element in creating
independent, lifelong readers.
PEER TUTORING
The grade two children are very lucky to have a number of grade six
volunteers coming into their rooms each day to assist with reading.
As you may have noticed the grade 2 doors are open at 8:45 a.m. in
order for this reading program to take place.
The grade sixes are providing the children with a model of what
good readers look and sound like and are then listening to the
children read.
Not only are these grade six children excellent role models, but they
are demonstrating leadership skills that are to be commended. The
grade 2 teachers are very grateful for their assistance.
Parent Reading Survey
Thank you so much to all of the parents who filled in the Parent
Reading Survey. We have had an overwhelming response to this and
we hope that we will be able to address many of your concerns and
make suggestions about how you can help your children with
reading.
As you can appreciate, there is so much involved in teaching a child
to read. It really is rocket science!
Some Concerns
The take home books are too easy and my child is not moving
up the levels quickly .
This can be frustrating for many parents. However, it is important to
be very mindful that going up the levels quickly is not always ideal.
Simply being an accurate reader does not necessarily mean that you
are a good reader. Often we have found that as the children move
through the school and begin reading more complex texts. that there
can be discrepancies between their ability to read a book accurately
and their understanding of it. It is so important that children are
reading to gain meaning from the text.
This is why we really want the children to choose books that they will
be able to read to you so that they can gain confidence and
experience success. If they are able to decode a text with ease, they
can then work on reading with expression and the very important
comprehension skills that require them to think about the text.
It is when they are working in a focused group with the teacher (we
call this guided reading) they are reading texts that are more
challenging and it is here that the teacher has the opportunity to
work with individual children at their level to determine which skills
they need to work on.
The take home books are old and of little interest to the
children.
This is always a tricky one. At the end of last year, our English team
culled many of the tatty and antiquated books and managed to
replace some of them. We would love to constantly be updating our
books as we recognise the importance of providing books that are
interesting and appealing but this is a costly exercise. As you can
imagine they are used by many children, some do not get returned
and therefore it is difficult to provide a steady flow of new
replacements however, we do regularly update our take home books
as the finances allow. Please encourage your child to select a range of
books from school and, sometimes, read their own books from home
to keep their interest in and love for reading.

Grade 1’s visit to Coal Creek! On Thursday 3rd May the Grade One’s and Two’s went to
visit Coal Creek in Korumburra as part of our
History inquiry unit. There they learned all about how people lived 118 years ago.
They enjoyed activities such as bush cooking, where they made their very own damper, visiting the old-fashioned general store and learning about how families lived over 100 years ago. They also experienced what it would have
been like in a classroom in the olden days!
It was a fantastic day had by everyone and the students were great representatives of our school,
showing good behaviour and lovely manners.
Here are some of their favourite things…

District Cross Country
On Thursday 3rd
of May, 39 students went to Hastings Foreshore and competed in the District
Cross Country against a lot of different schools. It was a lovely day with a challenging breeze
when you started the race but you then got the wind behind you to help give you a strong finish
home.
All the students put in a fantastic effort across all the age groups competing from 10 and under to
12/13 year olds. Tyabb have 2 students going on to represent Tyabb at the Division Cross
Country later on in the term which are Chloe and Mitchell.
Congratulations to these 2 students and well done to everyone on a great day.
Thank you to all the parents who came down to support Tyabb and thank you to Mr Emmett and Ms Riley for doing a super job with the supervision and encouragement of all the students.

Library News
You may have noticed your child coming home
with a brand new Library book or two. This was
due to your family donating a book to the school
at last year’s Book Fair. We had over 100 books
donated, which is a fabulous contribution.
I have four very special ladies to thank for all the
covering of these beautiful new books, Nicole,
Sarah, Danielle and a wonderful Mum who was
my first volunteer and I have misplaced her
name, sorry (please pop in and see me, so I can
correct this), your book covering skills are superb
and the books were back so fast. On behalf of
the students at Tyabb Primary School, thank
you so much for donating your time to cover the
large volume of books I was sending home, it
has enabled our students to access these new
additions to our Library.
Thank you
