The Lord GOD is my help,

therefore I am not disgraced.— Isaiah 50:7

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong?

(Isaiah 50:5-9a).

(Psalm 116).

Second Reading — Faith, if it does not have works, is dead

(James 2:14-18).

Gospel —Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?”

(Mark 8:27-35). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English

IT’S ALL ABOUT CONTROL

From toddlerhood to old age, we grow in mastery of our own lives, our bodies, and our destiny. This mastery

is hard won, and we don’t let go of autonomy easily. Much of this self-mastery involves the avoidance of pain

or discomfort, so when we hear things like “take up your cross” and “lose your life,” we tend to resist the

message.

James says that faith without works is dead. Ouch! That is really a direct message! One way to look at this, as

well as the part about losing our life to find it, is that faith is a process of more and more openness to God’s

direction of our lives. It is very hard for us to give up control, but perhaps what we are being asked to do is

not to become passive and babyish, but to allow God to direct where our self-mastery will lead and what it

will accomplish. We are asked to relinquish the need to control the results of our efforts; to risk, as Jesus did,

the loss of everything we are working to achieve. We are asked to let God take the lead and to control the

results, even though we may never see those results. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS

(September 14)

On this date in 335 two churches and a shrine erected by Constantine over the

empty grave of Jesus and over the place of the crucifixion were dedicated.

After these were destroyed by the Persians in 614, the Church of the Holy

Sepulcher, which still stands, was erected by the Crusaders in 1149. Today also

commemorates the event that led to the building of the churches dedicated in

335: the discovery of the “true cross” by St. Helena, Constantine’s mother, in

326.

According to one legend, St. Helena traveled to Jerusalem on

pilgrimage, in search of the true cross. Workers she hired dug through a pagan

temple that had been erected on the site of the Crucifixion by Hadrian and

found three crosses. A dying woman was brought in, and touched by each cross

in succession, the last of which healed her. Helena ordered that this cross be

divided in three parts, one to be kept in Jerusalem and the other two to be sent

to Constantinople and Rome. The pieces in Jerusalem and Constantinople were

ultimately lost. Slivers were taken from the portion that went to Rome until

eventually it was scattered around the world. Of course, the significance of the

true cross lies not in the wood itself but in the burden that it bore.

As a faithful Christian, what crosses do you accept in your life today? —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer of Remembrance For 9/11

Lord of Mercy, Prince of Peace,

This date, 9-11, carries a heavy burden of memory.

This day does not pass in the calendar without our remembering.

We remember images of death and destruction. Images that human eyes

were never meant to see. We remember words our ears were never meant

to hear, the tender last words of husbands and wives who would never

embrace again.

We imagine the feeling of emptiness in the arms of children who at the

end of the day could not find mom or dad for their welcome home hug.

We remember our own feelings of emptiness as our sense of security, as

our own confidence in the predictable order of life and work was radically

shaken.

This date, 9-11, carries a heavy burden of memory.

We remember the heroism of the many that lost their lives in saving

others. We remember all those who suffered and died, we grieve for them still, friends and strangers alike,

along with their families and friends.

This date, 9-11, carries a heavy burden of memory.

And it is right that it should not pass from our memory. But today and in this prayer, along with our

remembrance of profound loss, it also seems right that we give voice to our deep longing for peace, and with

this prayer, commit ourselves to those actions that will draw us closer to our most ancient and most holy

desire, peace among all God’s children.

Dona nobis pacem. Lord, grant us peace. Amen.

TREASURES FRO OUR TRADITION

Our national memory will keep September 11 holy for generations to come, as we remember the

innocent dead. Our memories of the attack on our nation are intertwined with memories of how we human beings are natural symbol-makers. In one parish, as a candlelight vigil ended, the assembly, without being

instructed, took their candles and stood shoulder to shoulder, down the steps and along the city streets for a quarter mile. Slowly, people came out of their houses bearing tapers and candles. In the first hours of crisis, we stood vigil, we prayed from the heart, and we celebrated the human ability to draw light out of terrible

darkness.

Stories of that terrible day necessarily drift to tales of heroism, courage, dignity, faith, solidarity, hope, community. The church learned long ago through hard experience that “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of

the church.” Perhaps the victims of 9/11 have gifts to bring that we are only ust discovering as believers in a ust and loving God. They are teaching us still, and today is a day for lighting candles at the table and being silent for a moment before the abundance of God’s gifts. Today reminds us that we are capable of acts of

indescribable beauty even in the face of great evil.
