Chiang Mai since its glorious past has been abundant with civilisation, arts and culture dated back to over 700 years. At the peak of Lanna kingdom, Chiang Mai emerged and made its mark in local history as it was named “Nopburi Sri Nakorn Ping Chiang Mai”, established and made a capital city by King Mangrai of Lanna The Great, the first king of Mangrai Dynasty. After different changes of rulers and system, during King Chu-lalongkorn (Rama V), Chiang Mai was made a province of Kingdom of Siam, and still inherits its importance, as well as greatness until now.

Ping River is vital for Chiang Mai, particularly for its agriculture since the past, and, recently, its tourism. Both sides of the river banks have been home to many restaurants, bars, and hotels. Those riverside bars and restaurants become very lively in the evening as it is the best time to enjoy the scene and atmosphere of Ping River along with fine dining. In the past, Ping River was the mainline for transport of the region. Now, most tourist boats still journey ardently up and down the river. Agriculture still largely depends on the water of this great river as ever. Ping River always remains an indispensable lifeline of Chiang Mai.

Wiang Kumkam It once was an experimental city site of King Mangrai of Lanna before establishing Chiang Mai. The area includes different ruin sites, and temples.Tong-gwow or Flame of the Forest is the flower of Chiang Mai. It is a flaming orange flower blooming during early summer. Chiang Mai locals still speak widely their local dialect “Kam Muang”(local words) which is a traditional Lanna dialect of Thai including its original scrip-ture. The traditional scripts are taught widely in schools. Every Friday, schools, bureaucrats, and general public dress up in their local traditional costumes as a part of local tradition promotion campaign.In 2010, Chiang Mai again was rated among top 5 of World’s Best Cities by Travel+Leisure Magazine, a leading travel magazine.

Rot Deang (Red Truck) is one of Chiang Mai’s icons. The name is derived from its appearance as a light truck painted in all red. Rot Deang is basically a shared taxi taking customers and travellers around the City of Chiang Mai depending on passengers and routes. Fee depends on distance and route. Rot Daeng will take any passenger flagging during journeys, and the driver will decide whether to take them or not. It can also be chartered for private service directly to the desired destination.

waT PhRa ThaT doi suTheP TemPle

One of the most revered temples of Chiang Mai, if not Thailand, is built at the peak of Lanna Kingdom. It is a home to the big golden pagoda, so beautiful it has been known all over the world. The pagoda base is filled with Buddha’s Relics, so it is highly respected by Buddhists who visit Chiang Mai. Leading to the site, there are over 300 steps of Naka staircase which is one prime example of Lanna architecture.

Kruba Sriwichai was a highly revered monk who has been praised as a Patron Saint of Lanna. He pioneered and paved the new road to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep by leading the Buddhist believers to help open up the new road to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep within a 6 month period. As a result, it was then possible for everyone to visit and pay respects the temple. The locals then built the monument to commemorate his good deeds and faith in him.

This old temple has stood alongside the city for very long time as it was built during Mangrai Dynasty. Now it is used as a meditation promotion centre though its outdoor museum telling truth according to Buddhism. Dharmma Painting Gallery holds many paintings with Dharmma interpreta-tions. It also has a good Buddhism library. Tourists can pay their respects to Buddha images placed in tunnels and rest peacefully in the forest park.

This museum displays local folk ways. It was built by the syndication of people in local communities who help bring items and utensils which were actually used by their old family members. The items include cooking and household utensils, lacquerware, ceramics and terracotta, costumes and textiles, and photographs. These artifacts tell their story first hand on lives back then in the good old days. In the bygone era, Wat Ket area was Chiang Mai business district, it was a lively and active community. So now it is rich with cultural diversity and worth visiting.

The museum displays abstract arts. The concept is the journey on the search for contemporary spirit. It is established by the famous artist, Kamin Lertchaiprasert. Arts on display are installed in freight containers. vichiT sTudio

This is a spacious art studio in a garden of mature trees and well-tended plants where all sculptures and installation arts are placed. The white building has personal work collection of Vichit Chaiwong, a Chiang Mai born artist, on display. This art space also features many artists who are friends of Vichit’s. This is known to be Chiang Mai’s biggest gallery.

Chiang Mai is a cultural city, inheriting the beauties of meticulous local arts and crafts. Sansiri, led by Sansiri Design Solution Department (DSD) has embarked on a journey to pursue skillful and meticulous artisans whose knowledge and fine craftsmanship had been passed from generation to generation, thus creating the Home-ward Bound Collection: An Inspired Journey. This consists of a series of contemporary household objects to transform a simple house into a home of stories about our cultural discovery, striking a balance between Thainess and modern appeal to suit any modern home. Collaborat ing with Baan Celadon, the collection features the Celadon (Thai traditional ash-glazed ceramics) Vase Set where traditional shapes are revamped with modern

graphics. Also, the Mango wood candle holders which are produced under the collaboration with Jaifah lacquerware, combine local skills of northern woodcarving and colouring inspired by Sansiri logo. Lastly, Teak-Leaf Umbrella, in collaboration with Mr. Leaf, is made from naturally fallen teak leaves, which are processed scien-tifically, making the material durable yet environmentally-friendly. Life in Chiang Mai An artist and a founder of Gallery Seescape, an art space on Nimmanhaemin road including Lounge Gallery – a gallery with artist residence. This is for visiting artists who come to live and create artworks for exhibition, so the audience can relate and see their working process.

Chiang Mai’s Charm I have been in Chiang Mai for 16 years. It is an art society which confirms me that people here have a shared strong belief, that Art can help propel society.

Arriving in Chiang Mai I recommend 31st Century Museum Contemporary Spir it , which belongs to K amin Lertchaiprasert. I really like his idea of the place, that is, the body is museum, and Spirit is Art. The museum collects art pieces relating human hearts and souls.

Chiang Mai – An Art City Chiang Mai always has art exhibitions launching several times a week. Most exhibitions are easily accessible; often you can just ride a bicycle to them.

The Reason to Love Chiang Mai Chiang Mai fits my way of thinking and lifestyle. My criterion is that if I can live there for more than 12 years, I would call it home.

This nice restaurant is well known for its northern and traditional Thai menu. The dishes are served in its 2 - R a i nat ur a l Lychee orchard ambience. It is open for lunch and dinner when the traditional north music band renders its hundred year old art. The recommended dishes are Nam Prik Ong, ground pork stirred and simmered with spices and tomatoes, served with fresh and steamed vegetables and Thai pork rinds. This Khao Soi place is rated among the top five of its kind in Chiang Mai. It has been around for over 20 years at its original location in Santitham area. It offers a variety of Khao Soi with beef, pork, and chicken with original soft and smooth noodles and crispy topping. This small noodle place is certainly with big taste. Apart from noodles, one can find fried snacks, appetizers as well as steak being served here. Still, the go-to dish is Khum Chao noodle, or dry Tomyam noodle using the original recipe from northern Prince’s estate. The dish features blanched pork cutlet, roasted pork slices, stewed ribs, pork balls, pork rinds, sliced long beans, peanuts with a small wedge of lime for a tangy taste. The dish is lined with banana leaf which gives a unique fragrant. To have this with Makiang juice, a local berry, is very good as it is well balanced with sweet and sour taste.

Originally from Chiang Rai, this pie maker started baking since 1992 from grandma’s recipe which has been passed on to this generation.After expanding to Chiang Mai, it has suddenly become the locals’ sweetheart until now. Suthep road running behind Chiang Mai University collects all nice street food vendors starting of late afternoon onwards. The unique one is Khai Jiaew Dao which is a combination of omelette with sunny side up egg topped on steamed rice. For a proper shop to sit, Moo Song Chan Hot Pot buffet is inexpensive and popular. The taste of its marinated pork, beef, and chicken cooked in Thai herb infused broth reasonably supersedes its price. The meal should end with sweet ‘Milo Dib’, a chocolate drink topped with Milo powder, the cold sweet drink popular among local students.

Chiang Mai – Yesterday and Today Things that remain unchanged is Chiang Mai people’s character – casual, kind, friendly, and easy to smile. That might be because their stress-free lifestyles. Within 5 minutes, one can get to the mountains and enjoy the nature. People can have a true com-fort in living.

Arriving in Chiang Mai Personally I really like Wat Chedi Luang temple, so I would recommend it. There is a big pagoda lasting from the old times. It is also declared a national heritage.

Chiang Mai – The City of Food Chiang Mai has a unique culinary style such as Sai Oua (Lanna style herb and spice sausage) and Namprick Noom (Green Fresh Chilli Paste) which are local dishes. Foods are carefully prepared and all raw materials are fresh and easy to find, such as our salad leaves which are all grown locally by Chiang Mai hydroponic farmers.

The Reason to Love Chiang Mai I was born here and this is my home on Nimmanhaemin road. There are strong and supporting social bonds I have here. I cannot live in other places. I always return to Chiang Mai.
