Principles of Operation

Page 15: EASYpure™ UF - Cole-Parmer · PDF fileThe Barnstead EASYpure UF is a line-fed water purifica- ... customer supplied shut off valve be installed in ... the inlet of the EASYpure UF.

15

DisplayWhen the EASYpure UF is in run mode, the display indi-cates the purity (in megohms-cm) of the water available fordraw off. When the EASYpure UF is in Standby mode, thedisplay will be dark and the Standby LED will be lit. Whenthe EASYpure UF is in a Flush mode, the display will bedark and the Manual/Extended Flush LED will be lit or flash. If the display indicates anything else, see the Troubleshoot-ing section of this manual.

Operational Modes

Run and Standby ModesSince not all qualities of permissible feedwater will reachmaximum resistivity after one pass through the unit’s car-tridges (especially as the cartridges near exhaustion), theEASYpure UF has two operational modes.

In the run mode, the pump continuously recirculates waterthrough the cartridges. This is the mode that the unit entersupon startup. If water will be drawn from the EASYpure UFon a continuous basis throughout the day, it is recom-mended that the EASYpure UF be left in the run mode. Inthe run mode, the purity meter display indicates the resistiv-ity of the water available for draw off.

In standby mode, the pump runs for ten minutes out of everyhour (i.e. ten minutes on, fifty minutes off). If water will bedrawn from the unit only infrequently, it is recommended thatthe unit be put into standby mode. To put the unit intostandby mode, press the “STANDBY” switch on the front ofthe unit. The display will be dark and the Standby LED willbe lit when the EASYpure UF is in Standby mode.

Automatic FlushIn both run and Standby modes, the EASYpure will initiate aone minute automatic flush of the ultrafilter once everytwenty-four hours of operation. This prevents bacterialbuildup on the ultrafilter. A solid-state timer in the EASYpureUF counts the hours power is applied to the unit. When thetimer reaches twenty-four hours, the EASYpure UF initiatesa one minute flush, the Automatic Flush LED is illuminated, and the timer resets to zero.

Cartridge ReplacementThe frequency with which you will need to replace car-tridges is dependent on your feedwater’s characteristics, your purity requirements and your usage. Replace thecartridges when the product water purity drops belowacceptable levels of resistivity or when organic levelsbecome too high.

Cartridge Removal1. Turn unit off.

2. Disconnect the unit from the power supply.

3. Depressurize system by opening outlet valve.

4. Open the cartridge access door in the rear ofthe unit by sliding the latch down and pulling thedoor toward you. The door will swing down.

5. Grasp one of the cartridges at the bottom andpull it straight up to disconnect the lower endcap from the lower socket.

6. Move cartridge upward until upper socket is inkeyhole of keyway.

7. Pull cartridge straight out from unit to disconnectupper end cap from upper socket.

8. Repeat steps for the other cartridges.

9. Discard the used cartridges. (See note below.)

10. Sanitize, install new cartridges and rinse accord-ing to the instructions for “Initial Sanitization”and “Cartridge Installation” in the “InitialOperation” section.

Maintenance and Servicing

WarningDisconnect from the power supply priorto maintenance and servicing.Refer servicing to qualified personnel.Do not disassemble water lines orremove cartridges where spilled watercould contact equipment that requireselectrical service. Disassembly of waterlines and removal of cartridges willresult in water spillage. Electrical shockhazard could result.

NoteThe cartridges will still contain waterwhen removed. Therefore, you willwant to have a sink, bucket or otherwaterproof container available to placethem in after removal.

NoteIf the EASYpure UF is wall mounted, remove the power cord and rotate theEASYpure UF until the cartridgeaccess door faces forward and theEASYpure UF locks into place.

NoteA small amount of water will drain fromthe cartridge when it is disconnectedfrom the lower socket. Plug thecartridge’s lower opening with yourfinger to minimize water spillage whileyou finish removing the cartridge.

NoteUsed cartridges may be recycled. SeeP.U.R.E. information packed with newcartridges.

0.2 Micron Filter ReplacementReplace the 0.2 micron final filter whenever any of thefollowing conditions occur: every 30 days, theproduct water flow rate is reduced or bacteria breakthrough. The 0.2 micron filter is shipped assembled with abell. To replace the 0.2 micron filter assembly:

1. Remove the old 0.2 micron filter assembly byturning it counterclockwise until it is free from theLuer fitting.

2. Remove the new 0.2 micron filter assembly fromits bag and insert it into the Luer fitting. Gently turnit clockwise until it is fully seated in the Luer fitting.

3. Rinse 10-15 liters of water through the filter todrain prior to using the product water.

System SanitizationFrequency of cleaning is difficult to determine because ofvariability in feedwater and usage. Sanitization is recom-mended when cartridges are replaced or if a new 0.2 micronfilter clogs rapidly after installation even though the car-tridges were properly rinsed before the 0.2 micron filter wasinstalled. To sanitize the EASYpure UF, the purificationcartridges must be replaced with a sanitization cartridge andtwo empty cartridges. The simple to use sanitization car-tridge is available from Barnstead|Thermolyne (Part#D50245). This is used in addition to the empty cartridgesincluded with this unit to effect a complete sanitization.

1. Turn the EASYpure UF off. Depressurize thesystem by opening the outlet valve. When waterstops flowing from the draw-off valve, the systemis depressurized.

2. Disconnect the unit from the power supply.

3. Remove the 0.2 micron final filter. Open thecartridge access door in the rear of the unit.Remove the purification cartridges and replacewith empty cartridges. Place a D50245 sanitizationcartridge in the first position and install the emptycartridges in the other two positions. Close thecartridge access door.

MAINTENANCE AND SERVICING

CautionDo not overtighten the 0.2 micron filterassembly onto the Luer fitting or useexcessive force in seating it. The filterand/or Luer fitting can be damaged byovertightening or excessive force.

NoteIf a newly installed 0.2 micron filterclogs rapidly after installation, theEASYpure UF may need to be sani-tized to remove bacterial contami-nants. See System Sanitization .
