EDITORIAL COMMENTElections were freeand fair

ELECTIONS, in which the opposition had its mem-bers harassed or its activities unfairly covered bythe state-owned and government-controllednews media organisations, elections in whichstate-owned news media organisations have beenturned into mouthpieces for the ruling party to theexclusion of the opposition, cannot be said to befree and fair or promote peace.

The ruling party may enjoy the advantage ofincumbency, but the rules and conduct of theelection must be fair for peace to be guaran-teed.

Peace can only be guaranteed if we are able tohold elections whose results the losers accept asreflecting the true voice of the voters. It is thereforeimportant to maintain and strengthen our demo-cratic and electoral structures if we are to witnesspeaceful politics.

The major players had to agree on the condi-tions under which this year’s elections would beheld. With all that said, in the recent elections inour country, we can confidently say they were freeand fair, despite the fact that there were some re-ported incidents and glitches here and there, butoverall they were credible, free and fair.

GREETINGS to the people of Kokstad.Election results

As I indicated lastweek SouthAfrica partici-pated in the fifth general elections on Wednes-day 7May. The electionswere historical for thepeopleofSouthAfricabecauseallthosechildrenwho were born in 1994 voted for the first time.I was also over the moon after voting in thosehistorical elections.

Like everybody I put my voice across andmadesureIchosethegovernmentofSouthAfri-ca. InKokstadinparticular therewerenoissuesof violence reported and people behaved welland respectedeachother’s right to vote. The re-sults of the elections have been released by IECand were accepted by the political parties. It isimportant to thank all the people who voted onWednesday. Their contribution will enable us

meetingsI wish to indicate that the public is allowed

to attend council meetings as they are open tothe public. As themunicipality we also encour-age the community to attend thesemeetings. Infact, I am planning to engage the speaker onmakingsurethatthecommunityispartandpar-cel of councilmeetings asmandated byMunici-pal Systems Act. With the town hall renovationin the final stageswewillhavemorespace toac-commodate the community. However, it is very

disturbing if the community members visitthese meetings just to disturb council proceed-ings. The sitting of the council is guided by thecouncil’s rules of order and everyone enteringthe council chambers has to abide by thoserules. We humbly appeal to people to respectcouncil rules when visiting council meetings. Itis not in our interest to order people to leave thechamberbecauseoftheirconduct.Wehopethatwe receive your full co-operation.

WARM greetings to the people of Umzimkhulu.A few days ago the entire nation marched to the

polling stations to exercise their right to vote, whichis enshrined in our Constitution.

This took place despite many dissenting voices

telling people to spoil their ballot papers. We greatlyhonourthepeopleofSouthAfricaforshowingmaturi-ty by not listening to them, but instead, using the op-portunity to choose the government of their choice.

We congratulate the African National Congress forits overwhelming victory in the 2014 elections. Thisshows that the people of this country entrust theirhope in the African National Congress. We shame themedia and other counter-revolutionary forces be-cause they campaigned negatively against the rulingparty. This government has actually changed the livesof the people, which has been reaffirmed by this victo-ry. Indeed, we must not disappoint our people, butmake them happy with services.

Again, it is significant for us to share with you theplans of this municipality before the end of the finan-cial year. We are unstoppable in service delivery. Thememorial hall is being demolished in order to erect a

new state-of-the-art building. This building will com-pletelychangethelookofthetownandwillaccommo-date staff and a gymnasium.

The Auditor General is on site for an audit of thethree quarters. We welcome the initiative because itaims to reduce work for the municipality. In July thefocus will be on the last quarter. If the municipalityachieves a clean audit in the three quarters, this thenwill be a sign that we are moving along the correctpath. Salga KZN was in Umzimkhulu to congratulatethe Umzimkhulu Municipality for attaining a clean au-dit in the 2012/2013 financial year. It has displayedits admiration with a token of appreciation. We arevery excited to receive a certificate that recognisesa good achievement. This is a historic moment forUmzimkhulu in achieving this audit opinion.

Wacky winter weekend: hockeyand rugby

On Saturday, 10 May our u/7, u/8andu/9 girls aswell as u/11andu/13boys had a busy day on the sports

wards the Nelson Mandela capturesite just outside Howick. This wasquite a poignant moment as it wasexactly 20 years ago that the firstdemocraticelectionswereheld.Afterviewing the cleverly crafted steel col-umns and browsing through themuseum, we continued our journey. After a few hours of travelling staffwere starting to hear, “Are we nearlythere yet?” The response, “no, anddon’t ask that again for another sixhours,” did serve to silence a few.

We eventually arrived in the pic-turesque town of Barberton at6.30pm. After unpacking, we weretreated to a hearty supper by ourfriendly hosts at Barberton HotelSkool.

The followingmorningweheadedto the Barberton Museum wherepupils were told about the geologicalhistory of the area and were eachgiven a greenstone. We then did theHeritage Walk, which included theVictorianMuseumHouses, theblock-houseand the façadeof the first stockexchange in the Transvaal.

Our visit to Sudwala Caves andDinosaur Park that afternoon sadlyhad to be postponed due to transportproblems. This however, did notdampen pupils’ spirits. The nextmorningrequiredanearlystartasweheaded off to Malelane Gate for amorning in theKrugerNationalPark.

Plenty of impala and kudu werespottedamongotherantelopesuchaseland, duikerandwaterbuck.Guineafowl, a number of bird species, warthog, giraffe and buffalo were al-so spotted.

At one stage, an elephant cowwasseen next to the road and as the firstbus rounded the corner, it unfortu-nately upset the elephant bull thatwas crossing the road.He turnedandmade a mock charge toward the busand then decided to get slightly

angrier, but after some very tenseminutes (that felt likeaneternity), thebus driver saw an opportunity to getpast him. Needless to say, this wascertainly the story of the day as theterrifying moments were recountedover and over.

Later in the morning, we heardthat there was a pride of lion on theRenosterkop road.Weheadedoff on-to the gravel road, but due to thehighrainfall in the area, there was quite adeep drift thatwas only accessible by4x4 vehicles and our buses had toturn around thus missing this excit-ing sighting.

After exiting at Numbi Gate, wemade our way to Graskop. The daysthat followed included tours of thePanoramic Route, which includedGod’s Window, Blyde River Canyon,Bourke’s Luck Potholes andMacMacFalls and Pools.

Blyde River Canyon and Bourke’sLuck Potholes took our breath away— the beauty and magnificence ofthis area is indescribable. Somepupils temporarily conquered theirfear of heights just to see the beautyof this area.

The last daywas scheduled for thevisit to Sudwala Caves. In the amphi-theatre (where Miriam Makeba andthe Drakensberg Boys’ Choir haveperformed), our tour guide askedpupils to perform a musical item todisplay the acoustics in the caves.

Theyallsteppedontothestageandperformed a beautiful rendition of agospel song, which delivered an ap-plause from a number of other tourgroups in the caves.

It was then time to head home —leaving the majestic MpumalangaMountains and scenery, to head forthe hills and mountains of KwaZulu-Natal.
