What is Earthquake ?
.
An earthquake is a shaking of the
ground caused by the sudden breaking and movement of large sections
(tectonic plates) of the earth's rocky outermost crust.
What causes an Earthquake ?
As the plates move they put forces on themselves and each other. When the
force is large enough, the crust is forced to break. When the break occurs, the stress
is released as energy, which moves through the Earth in the form of waves, which we feel and call an earthquake.
What are Tectonic Plates ?
Plate tectonics is the scientific theory that attempts to explain the movements of the Earth's lithosphere. By definition the word
"plate" in geologic terms means a large slab of solid rock. "Tectonics" is a part of the Greek root for "to build" and together the terms
define how the Earth's surface is built up of moving plates.
What are Seismic waves ?
Seismic waves are the waves of energy caused by the sudden breaking of rock within the earth or an explosion. They are the energy that travels
through the earth. There are 2 types a seismic waves. They are P wave and S wave.
Is there any instrument to measure Seismic Waves ?
A seismograph, also sometimes called a seismometer, is an instrument that measures and records the seismic
waves that move through the earth as the result of an earthquake.

What will happen if earthquake happens in water ?
It leads to a very Dangerous disaster called Tsunami………
Richter Scale
There are a number of ways to measure the magnitude of an earthquake. The first widely-used method, is the Richter scale, was developed by Charles F. Ricter whose Magnitudes were based on a logarithmic scale.
Richter Scale Measurement.
4 - Minor Earthquake
5 - Moderate Earthquake
6 - Strong Earthquake
7 - Major Earthquake
8 - Great Earthquake
Did you know what is special about Taj Mahal ?
Actually, Taj Mahal is situated in earthquake zone. If earthquake comes the four pillars in the taj mahal would destroy the whole building. But, the persons who constructed Taj mahal had thought wisely and they made the pillars 2.5 meters slightly.so,this pillars will fall on the mosque and the dinning hall and so that will safe guard the main building.
Worst Earthquake in India
On 26 January 2001, an earthquake struck the Kutch district of Gujarat at 8.46 am . It has Epicentre of 20 km North East of Bhuj, the headquarter of Kutch. The Indian Meteorological Department estimated the intensity of the earthquake at 6.9 Richter. According to the US Geological Survey, the intensity of the quake was 7.7 Richter. The quake was the worst in India in the last 180 years.

Worst Earthquake in World
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal in an area between the capital, Kathmandu, and the city of Pokhara on Saturday April 25, 2015 with what has been described as a force equaling that of 20 thermonuclear weapons. The devastation claimed the lives of at least 5,000 people while injuring 10,000 more with authorities warning that casualty numbers could rise. The devastating quake also destroyed major monuments such as the Dharahara tower, temples and world heritage sites near Kathmandu.
