PPresence detection is acritical element in thebasis of safety for many

pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical processes.Detecting presence of workersprior to start-up and duringoperation of machinery andprocesses is an effective meansof injury prevention. Likewiseproduct can be protected fromhuman contamination usingcollaborative robots allied withrelevant 3-D presence detec-tion. The pharmaceutical sectorhas always had to deploysophisticated processes andtechnology in its manufactur-ingenvironment while main-tainingthe highest safety standards. Presence detection is anapproach which respondspositively to the need for workersafety while minimis-ingproduction disruption. Processcomponents such as centrifugesand barrel mixers pose asignificant risk to workersbecause of high speed rotationalaction or agitation. Likewisetransportation of storage unitssuch as inter-mediate bulkcontainers and the use ofautomated wrapping andpalletising machinery create theneed for effective safeguarding.3D sensing systems providemany advan-tages through theintroduction of barrier-freesafeguarding.SafetyEYE, a 3-D virtualdetection system, provides acomprehensive protection zonearound such machinery.Developed jointly by the Pilz

Software Research and

Development team in Cork andthe Product Developmentdivision in Ostfildern (D), thecompany considers SafetyEYEas an example of newtechnologies creating aparadigm shift in the planning ofsafety for current and futuremanufacturing systems.Named ‘Safety Company of theYear’ for 2014 by the Institutionof Occupational Safety and

Health’s (IOSH) Desmond-South Munster Branch, theaward recognised thecompany’s commitment tocontinuous innovation, singlingout the development ofSafetyEYE as central to thiscommitment. Bob Seward, chair of the IOSHDesmond-South MunsterBranch, said: “The develop-ment of this innovativeSafetyEYE technology will makea significant difference in termsof protecting people at workwhile they operate aroundmachinery danger zones. Ourmembers were very impressedwith SafetyEYE and what it canachieve in terms of accidentprevention and safeguardingworkers.”The world’s first 3D zonemonitoring system SafetyEYEcomprises a three-camerasensing device, an analysis unitand programmable controlcapability. The sensing unit creates theimage data of the zone to beprotected and the stereoscopiccameras allow for precisedistance and depth perception.Adjusting the height of thecamera device allows forvarying zone dimensions andareas of coverage. The imagedata is processed by the analysisunit to detect any intrusion ofthe defined 3-D protection zoneand is relayed to theprogrammable safety and

control system (PSS) foractivation of the appropriatesafety response. The avoidance of an obstacle-course of physical guards hasobvious advantages forincreased freedom of inter-action and ergonomics betweenmachinery and humans withoutcompromising safety for both.Because of the highlyconfigurable software a widerange of detection zones can bedesigned either using pre-defined geometric forms orbespoke shapes. These zonescan then be assigned varioussafety-related actuations withreference to the risk from anaudio-visual warning to shut-down. SafetyEYE can be used toprevent start-up of machinerywhen persons are in a dangerzone or provide warnings and ifnecessary activate a shutdown ifan operator enters a danger zonewhile such plant is running. Thesystem can be configured tosignal a warning as the workerenters the perimeter of thedefined safety zone and as hecontinues further into the zoneinitiate further safety actions. The machine can remain in thissuspended state while theworker completes his task. Oncethe worker has cleared the areathe machine’s activities canresume in accordance with theworker’s egress from the safetyzone. This incremental reactive

capability allows for minimumdowntime and so optimalproductivity is maintained. Forworkers who only encroach onthe outer points of the safetyzone the triggered warning willuphold the safety integrity of thework space without limit-ingoperation. Likewise, the systemcan be configured to allow forpre-defined spaces within theprotection zone to be breachedwithout shut down. This isespecially useful for supervisorypersonnel who need to accesscontrol components which liewithin the safety zone. Againthey may complete their tasksafely without the need todisrupt the manufacturingprocess. To achieve the same level ofsafety in such a scenario as this,a whole range of other safetymeasures may have to bedeployed, such as guard-doors,with the physical and visualrestrictions these solutions willimpose. Safety for workersventuring beyond these guardswould then require opticalsensors which operate two-dimensionally along a plane andmay require a multiplicity ofsensors to provide compre-hensive monitoring. This mix ofsolutions can present significantcost implications and their staticsingle-plane positioning willraise costly design challenges. As SafetyEYE is positionedabove the manufacturing area itdoes not present any physical orvisual obstruction and it is alsofar less likely to be interferedwith than other ground-levelsafety measures which arealways more vulnerable tointentional or accidental inter-ference. The 3-D zonal capab-ility means that one sensor unitcan provide far more safetycoverage than the planarsensors. Such imaging-baseddevices also have a recordingfunctionality so that safety zonebreaches can be recorded orproduction activity monitored to

feed into productivity metrics. These attributes were acknow-ledged by Bob Seward of theIOSH when presenting Pilz withthe award. “With theintroduction of this certifiedtechnology, safety can no longerbe seen as a barrier to work, slowing work down or stoppingwork. It can be truly integratedin the work system.”Pilz Ireland managing directorJohn McAuliffe said: “Pilzwere honoured to receive thisaward. The area of safety inwhich we work is constantlychanging and Pilz need to beinnovative in order to provideour customers with solutionsthat achieve safety in leanmanufacturing environments.”Providing services from riskassessment, safety design andsafety training to customers allover the world the companyviews continuous developmentof processes and products, suchas SafetyEYE, as vital inmeeting the constantly evolv-ingdemands of the modern

manufacturing environment.SafetyEYE is especiallyeffective in ensuring the safedeployment of collaborativerobots which are ideal for

handling materials and ingred-ients in a decontaminatedenvironment but which requiresome level of interaction withoperators who need to ap-proach

to carry out superv-isory, controlor intervention. Such are the potential produc-tion efficiencies brought aboutby collaborative robotics in thebulk pharmaceutical manufac-turing sector that H & S mana-gers, engineers and supplierswill need to align their safetystrategy in line with the newindustrial environment. As with all new technologiescare and due process must beexercised in the integration withother plant and machinery.Structured risk assessmentconsidering the specific hazardsleading to intelligent safetyconcepts are the key tosuccessful adoption of such newtechnologies. Pilz is pio-neeringsafe automation with thecontinuous development of itsservices and products, such asSafetyEYE, ensuring that itscustomers can anticipate thesafety challenges presented byindustry developments such ascollaborative robots.

New name!

Thirty-four-year-old networkingexpert B&B Electronics is nowknown as B+B SmartWorx. While continuing the traditionof developing mission-criticalnetwork connectivity technol-ogy for remote or demandingenvironments, B+B SmartWorxis ramping up the intelligence

in that connectivity piece, embedding intelligence through-out the network connectivitystack, from edge device tonetwork backbone.

B+B’s latest technologies haveled the company to this newposition in the Internet ofThings (IoT) industry and thedecision to change its name. Those technologies – theWzzard Intelligent SensingPlatform for creating wirelesssensor networks (WSNs) wherecustomer applications and logicreside at the network edge, andits SWARM intelligence-basedcellular edge gateway devices –combine to form the B+BSmartWorx IoT EdgeProcessing Architecture.Engineered for environmentswhere existing equipment andnetworks are too valuable toignore or replace, B+B’s edgeprocessing architecture addsnew layers of functionality, efficiency, productivity andscalability to existing M2M datanetworks, allowing integratorsand VARS to evolve theircustomers’ existing networksinto more autonmous anddecisive IoT systems.“IoT technologies have insertedmore intelligence, andcomplexity, into the M2Mconversation,” said Jerry

O’Gorman, CEO of B+BSmartWorx. “While companiesdesire the improved dataanalytics the IoT brings, manyare stopping short of adoptiondue to the complexity ofintegrating existing assets intothe IoT vision. For several yearsB+B has been engineeringsolutions to bring existingequipment into the IoTconversation, and hencetransitioning from connec-tivity

technology to technology forconnected intelligence, so theold B&B Electronics imagedidn’t fit us anymore.”O’Gorman points to the 2012acquisition of Czech Republic-based Conel and its industrialcellular gateways as the sparkfor the company’s intensivedevelopment to enable IoTsolutions. “The Conelacquisition gave us animmediate pedigree withinEurope, and our new tech-nologies build upon this trustedbase. With the integrationprocess complete it seems rightto combine our identity into asingle brand, bringing togetherthe best of what has beenachieved in Europe and the USin the past decades, andsignaling our strategic directionin future.”The new focus on theintelligence in the connectivitypiece has also led B+B to investin software engineeringexpertise at all of its globallocations, including a new teamin Galway. Historically, B+Baveraged one or two softwareengineers for every hardwareengineer; today it’s six or eightto one.“The M2M and IoT world ischanging rapidly, creatingenormous opportunity but withthat a risk of being left behind,”explained Glen Allmendinger, founder and president of HarborResearch. “Many companiesare struggling with this. Someare attempting a completechange in business model;others have yet to embrace anyclear strategy. B&B Electronics, now emerging as B+BSmartWorx, has not onlyembraced the new opportunitybut they’ve also executed on it ina remarkably short period oftime. Impressively, they’ve doneit without putting their businessmodel at risk or alienating otherplayers in the ecosystem byturning partners intocompetitors.”

HAL at Hannover

Hal Software launched theirSpike Prototype software atHannover Messe. SpikePrototype allows users toprototype control and MESsystems to any level of fidelity, from simple valve sequencingall the way to completebatches. Standards based(ISA-S88 and ISA-S95), easyto use and target systemindependent, Spike Prototypeis designed for use across anorganisation. As part of the launch HalSoftware’s Chief Technical

Officer Cormac Garvey (left)presented at the event’sprestigious IndustrialAutomation Forum. The titleof the presentation was“Prototyping a batch controlsystem using ISA-S88 andISA-S95 design patterns.” andRead-out hopes to publish thispresentation in the future.Cormac says prototyping willhelp transform automation andwill be the industry standard in5 years. “A typical projectsaving of 30% is far too highto ignore. Additional use casesin knowledge manage-ment,process improvement, reverseengineering, “what-if”scenarios testing and corporatestandard design make theconcept a compel-ling one.Automation profes-sionals,MES engineers and processengineers need to askthemselves when they aregoing to start usingprototyping, rather than if.”

Environmental

Monitoring

Tinytag data loggers monitorparameters including tempera-ture, RH, CO2, voltage, currentand count, enabling conditionsto be recorded, analysed andvalidated. The range includesunits that are ideal fortemperature monitoring inmanufacturing, process andengineering applications. These loggers, marketed inIreland by Manotherm, have arugged, waterproof anddustproof design, and ifrequired, accompanying probesare available for measuringextremes of temperature,

product core temperatures, orfor comparison of both ambientand process temperatures.Probes are also suitable formonitoring awkward to reachareas such as pipework. The range includes athermocouple logger whichsupports type K, J, T and Nthermocouples, providing fastresponse, versatile monitoringfrom -270°C to 1370°C.As well as stand-alone loggers, which record data that isdownloaded to a PC foranalysis, a Radio Data LoggingSystem is available which isideal in premises requiringmultiple monitoring points.Environmental data is gatheredautomatically and sent via areceiver for direct viewing on aPC, across a LAN, or remotelyacross the internet. Radio loggers recordtemperature, RH, and also lowvoltage, current and countinputs, making them suitable foruse with third party sensors torecord properties such aspressure, flow rates and footfall.

Hazardous CCTV

Stahl’s Camera System's OPENCCTV System offers the uniqueoption of operating CCTVequipment of various manu-facturers in one system, essentially independent ofcommunication protocols.OPEN CCTV has been designedfor the combined operation ofhardware in hazardous andindustrial areas. This highlyflexible system enables systemdevelopers and operators toovercome what used to betypical limitations: an OPENCCTV System can integratenot only explosion-protectedcameras and other technologyfrom the company, but almostany other hardware in order toimplement customised monitor-ing solutions specificallytailored to various areas of

application (e.g. in drilling rigs, refineries, pharmaceuticalplants, etc.). The system alsoallows for easy expansion ofexisting systems, for instance ifincreased safety standards callfor inspection windows, orrequire an additional surveill-ance e.g. of tank farms, loadingbays, platforms, or cranes.Innovative zoom cameras orthermal imaging cameras can beas smoothly integrated asredundant power supplies, UPSsystems, alarm processingtechnology (e.g. for I/O

interfaces of fire and gas alarmsystems) or redundant serversystems.Stahl products are marketed inIreland through Douglas

Controls and Automation. The company manufactures awide selection of explosion-protected cameras as keycomponents of any CCTVsolution. Most are based on theinnovative SNF technology, where static, sensor-controlledpressurisation with nitrogen (N2)prevents the ingress of moistureor dust into the camera interior. The cameras are thereforecompletely water-proof, whichgreatly increases their life-expectancy and availability.SNF cameras are furthermoreextremely light-weight, compactand easy to operate, and tolerateeven extreme ambienttemperatures (-40°C to +75°C).The entire company’s broadexpertise to the design ofindividual CCTV systems:comprehensive knowledgeregarding all methods ofexplosion protection ensuresthat the full range oftechnologies is taken intoconsideration as the ideal optionfor a specific application isselected. Depending on thenumber of cameras, recordingrequire-ments, necessaryinterfaces, security patrolroutines etc., Stahl can attachsoftware of different degrees ofcomplexi-ty to suit theindividual OPEN CCTVsolution. In addition to devisingproject-specific systems StahlCamera Systems provides a fullservice up to the implementationstage, compris-ing everythingexcept installation.

suitable for worldwide usage inexplosion hazard areas. This unit was developed for usein explosion hazard env-ironments and can be mounteddirectly in both gas and dusthazard areas of zone 0 / Div1.Precise humidity andtemperature measurements from0-100 %rel. hum. and -40-180°C (-40...356 °F) are alsopossible in applications underpressure up to 300 bar (4351psi). Just as with humid-itymeasurement in air, theEE300Ex can also be used formoisture measurement in oils.Various models offer a highdegree of flexibility. As a com-pact variant – with or withoutdisplay – the transmitter can bemounted directly in the hazardarea. With a remote probe, temperature classifications up toT6 can also be achieved.Depending on requirements, anEE300Ex model for combinedhumidity & temperature meas-urement or for temperaturemeasurement only is available. The two-part stainless steelhousing (separate connectionarea and measurement unit)simplifies installation of thetransmitter considerably. It alsopermits the rapid replacement ofthe measurement unit – such asfor calibration – without time-consuming re-cabling.The measured values are issuedon two analogue outputs with 4-20mA. The power can besupplied via any intrinsicallysafe power supply device. Inaddition to the measured valuesfor humidity and temperature, dew point, frost point, absolutehumidity, mixing ratio and othercalculated values can also beissued. The configuration softwarepermits customised configura-tion of the transmitter outsidethe hazardous area and permits, flexible, simple and rapidadaptation of the analogue -outputs for the relevantapplication.

End of an ICS Security Era

EEric & Joann Byres have announced their retirement fromthe Tofino Security group at Belden. Eric comments: “Aswe reflect back on almost a decade and half in the

industrial security business, we remember the wild ride it hasbeen to create and grow both a SCADA security business and theindustry as a whole. From our early days of criticalinfrastructure security research, to Stuxnet, to last year’s releaseof the Tofino 2.0 product line, we have seen a lot of changes. When we think about what we aimed to achieve, we’re glad thatsome of our core beliefs have gained widespread acceptance. This includes the principle of “security simplicity” and thenecessity of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) for industrialprotocols. We also tried to contribute to the ICS security industryoverall and our work on standards, particularly with ISA, wasrewarding.” Read their farewell blog here: bit.ly/1yOuYu1
