OS!), it was discovered that neither my father-in-law nor her had a Medical Pow-er of Attorney . We had discussed this at length over the past few years . I did not care one bit about their possessions . I was mainly concerned about their health and proper decisions being made for them . Even though my father-in-law is alive, his current mental status made the doctors and us question his ability to make suitable medical decisions during this time . Fortunately, my mother-in-law was coherent for two days . She was able to convey to hospital staff and social workers her wishes . She was able to sign the paperwork to give her best friend Medical Power of Attorney . Not everyone gets this fortunate opportunity . We KNOW how lucky we were . We knew exactly what she wanted and what she didn’t want . So, what is a Medical Power of Attorney? It is a legal document that gives YOU the opportunity to choose a family member or friend and give them the legal authority to speak for you and make medical decisions for you if you are ever unable to speak and make medical decisions for yourself . The Medical Power of Attorney would go into effect only after a physician has determined that you are unable to make medical decisions for yourself . The legal status of the Medical Power of Attorney only lasts for the duration of your incapacity . The person you have chosen as your Medical Power of Attorney would no longer have the deci-sion making authority as soon as you are capable of making your own choices . The individual you choose as your Medical Power of Attorney would have full rights to be informed by your doctors of your condition and choose your course of treatment; full access to your medical records; authority to make choices for you about tests, surgery, or medication . A Medical Power of Attorney does NOT give anyone any authority to make your financial or any other business decisions. If you are legally married, your spouse is automatically designated by law to speak on your behalf if you become incapacitated (UNLESS you choose some-

After school was out in June, we all went to Vermont on a mission trip with our church group . As usual, Gus informed ev-eryone he saw that he was go-ing to Vermont . We left a few days ahead of the church group to visit some friends in upstate New York . Gus’ favor-ite part of the visit in New York was riding the 4-wheel-ers . Sam even got to ride with us . Gus still likes his tree limbs so he col-lected white pine limbs as we rode 4-wheelers . After a short visit, we trav-eled over to Ver-mont to meet our mission group .

I was a bit anx-ious about the trip because I wasn’t sure what Gus and I would be able to do . Part of the group would be updat-ing and remodel-ing a house to be-come a homeless shelter . The other part of the group would be prepar-ing meals for the homeless, plan-ning Bible school one day and various other activities . I had already told our team leader not to expect any work out of Gus and I . My vision of Gus in a house with open buckets of paint and sheet rock putty was anything but good . Turns out, Gus had his own mis-sion .

Five of us from the group, including Gus went to the church early every morning to cook breakfast for the group . Gus didn’t do any cooking, just eating . His mis-

one else through using a Medical Power of Attorney) . Parents are able to speak on the behalf of their mi-nor children . Legal guardians are legally charged with health care decision making . YOUR PARENTS will need to legally appoint someone as their Medical Pow-er of Attorney to make medical decisions for them if they are unable to speak for themselves . Adult children DO NOT automatically become their parents’ Medical Power of Attorney . If you get a divorce, your ex-spouse no longer has legal status to make emergency health care decisions on your behalf . If your parent was sin-gle or widowed, and then remarried, the new spouse would become the Medical Power of Attorney for them unless your parent states otherwise in a Medical Pow-er of Attorney . People tend to not want to discuss or make these deci-sions . They are not comfortable talking about death . Younger people think they have plenty of time ahead of them. Older people may not want to cause conflict among family members . Even if you are currently alert and able to discuss your wishes, at some point in your life you may become unconscious, unable to speak and unable to let others know your wishes . Car ac-cidents happen . Life-threatening medical conditions happen . Life happens . These things happen to every-one . If you should become incapacitated and unable to speak for yourself, no one else can (other than a legal spouse) without a Medical Power of Attorney . Filling out this paperwork doesn’t mean you will become ill soon . It means you are prepared if you do! How do you make a Medical Power of Attorney? It is important to note that this process is governed by the laws of each state . The information varies slightly from state to state, and the legal status of the Medical Power

GUSsion was to stand on the sidewalk outside the church and get everyone coming and going to honk the horn . We even made him a sign saying, “Honk for Jesus .” On Friday morning, Gus and I didn’t help with breakfast because another lady had to go early and set up for Bible school . Chris said even though Gus wasn’t there, a few people were honking their horn as they passed .

Most days, Gus and I, and of course Sam, would walk Main Street meeting and greeting people. All traffic going through town has to travel Main Street so we saw lots of cars and trucks of all sizes . Gus was always looking for big trucks and dump trucks and asking them to blow the horn . One morning, as we walked, we saw two men on a bench . I’m not sure if Gus recognized them but they had been to our soup kitchen the day before . Gus walked up to the bench and plopped himself down right between the two men . Before long, all three of them were trying to get the big trucks to honk their air horns .

One afternoon as we were walking, Gus sat down with an older man who turned out to be a Vietnam Veteran . The man seemed very down and out and Gus tried to cheer him up with a smile . He didn’t take too kindly to Gus so we didn’t visit very long . As we left, I asked the man if there was anything we could do for him . He asked, “Just pray for me .” So Gus and I and the two ladies with us joined hands and prayed for this man right there on Main Street . It was such a blessing to stop and pray with him .

The best part of the trip was Gus’ newfound friend . Gus is amazing around strangers . He has no fears, which can be good and bad . He apparently doesn’t judge people before he meets them as I often do. On the first day a meal was served at the church, Gus made friends with one of the biggest men in town, Mark . Like most homeless people, Mark was a little rough around the edges and taking a shower was obviously not a top priority . Everyday Gus would ask, “Is Mark coming?” We only served a meal to the homeless 3 days that week . On the days we didn’t serve, Gus and I would walk to Main Street looking for Mark . Everyday, Gus got to see Mark and visit with him, even if Mark didn’t come to the church . This was a very unique friendship God put together over many miles . Gus still prays for Mark every night .

Of course Sam I Am was with us every step of the way . When Gus and I walked Main Street, Sam was usually tethered to Gus to keep him close to me . Sam had a long week because he worked more that week than usual . He was a great help when Gus and I went walking and visiting .

It was an amazing trip and a blessing to see how God can use any and all of us to make a difference in the lives of others . I’m sure there are people in that town who are glad that boy with the dog is gone because horns are not blowing all the time . But I’m also certain there are a few people wondering what happened to the boy with the dog because he made them smile when they blew their horn for him .

of Attorney signed in one state, may not be fully rec-ognized in another . This is usually not an issue with regard to temporary travel . However, if you reside in another state for part of the year (for example, if you live in one state part of the year, and in another for the rest of the year), a Medical Power of Attorney should be completed in both states . There are a variety of places to obtain the forms for your state’s version of the Medical Power of Attorney . Your Doctor, a local hospital, a nursing home, reputable online sites, or a legal provider can all assist you with this matter . The completed document should be notarized by a notary public . In our case, we were very fortunate that my mother-in-law was able to communicate her wishes and get the appropriate paperwork taken care of before it was too late . When the time came, we were able to make the decision for her to go home, where she peacefully passed away surrounded by her loved ones .

I made this for Rheannon’s birthday celebration and it was a hit . Even Bethany loved it . I hope you will give it a try . I got the recipe from Damn Delicious (http://damndelicious .net) . Not my favorite name for a blog, but every recipe I have tried from her blog is very good . We enjoyed the shrimp on a fresh salad and used the sauce as a dressing . I hope you will give this a try; It’s a little time consuming, but well worth the effort .

Bang Bang Shrimp

Ingredients1/2 cup vegetable oil, or more, as needed1 cup buttermilk3/4 cup all-purpose flour1/2 cup cornstarch1 large egg1 tablespoon hot sauceKosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste1 cup Panko1/2 teaspoon onion powder1/2 teaspoon garlic powder1/2 teaspoon dried basil1/2 teaspoon dried oregano1 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined

Sauce Ingredients1/4 cup mayonnaise2 tablespoons sweet chili sauce1 tablespoon honey1 teaspoon rice vinegar

DirectionsTo make the sauce, whisk together mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, honey and rice vinegar in a small bowl; set aside .

Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. In a large bowl, whisk together buttermilk, flour, cornstarch, egg, hot sauce, salt and pepper, to taste; set aside .

In a large bowl, combine Panko, onion and garlic pow-der, basil, oregano, salt and pepper, to taste; set aside .

Working one at a time, dip shrimp into buttermilk mix-ture, then dredge in Panko mixture, pressing to coat .

Working in batches, add shrimp to the skillet and cook until evenly golden and crispy, about 2-3 minutes . Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate .

Serve immediately, drizzled with sweet chili sauce .
