QuestionHow many 3’s go into 645?

Steps

• How many 3s are in 6? (Two) But remember the 6 is

six 100s. So the answer is two what? Two 100s, so we

write that in the 100s column above the 6.

• How many 3s are in 4? One, but remember that the 4 here is four 10s, so the answer is one what? One 10, so we write 1 in the 10s column above the 4. How many left over? One, one what? One ten so we carry over.

• Move the one 10 left over along and write it in front of the 5 to make 15 as we are now dividing the 10 we had left over and the 5.

• How many 3s are in 15? Five, but five what? Five 1s, so we write 5 in the 1s column above the 5.

So what is 645 divided by 3? 215.

Chunking to help

Sometimes using our multiplication skills helps us to work out how many of the divisor are in the

number.

Think to yourself does this seem right? How many 3’s are in 600? 200, so the answer is going to

be around 200 and something. Let’s look at the same question:- How many 3’s in 645.

Try practising using this chunking method to work out the following:-

a) 755 divided by 5b) 545 divided by 3

Answers

a) ? x 5 = 755

100 x 5 = 500

255

50 x 5 = 250

5

1 x 5 = 5

Answer is 151

151 x 5 = 755

It helps with 755 ÷ 5 = 151

b) ? x 3 = 543100 x 3 = 300

24350 x 3 = 150

9330 x 3 = 90

1 x 3 = 3

Answer is 181 181 x 3 = 543

It helps with 543 ÷ 3 = 181

Method

2 boxes of pencils:-

1 containing 173

1 containing 149

‘Puts them together’ means add them and total 173 + 149 = 322

Now share the total equally between 7 pots.

322 pencils ÷ 7 pots = 46 pencils

Means 46 pencils in each pot.

4. A batch of new reading books has been delivered to school. There are 275

books. Each class needs 15 books. How many classes will get the books that

they need?

5. Mrs Smith, Mrs Jones and Miss Dawson share a big box of chocolates.

There are 12 different types of chocolate in the box. There are 168

chocolates altogether. How many are there of each type of chocolate?

6. Emily, William and Sarita go ‘Trick or Treating’ together. Emily gets 26

sweets. William gets 21. Sarita gets 25. If they share them equally, how

many sweets will each get in the end?

1. 360 ÷ 20 = 18 pencils each

2. £48 ÷ 9 = 5 can go to see the film (£3 remainder)

3. 504 ÷ 7 = 72 seats 10 x 7 = 7020 x 7 = 14050 x 7 = 350

4. 275 ÷ 15 = 18 classes (5 books remainder) 10 x 15 = 15020 x 15 = 300

5 x 15 = 755. 168 ÷ 12 = 14 of each type of choc(the fact that 3 teachers are sharing them is not relevant)

11,352 ÷ 25 = 454 r 2

Only 454 packs of 25 marbles can be made.

6. 23 x 11 = 253 individual players.

253 + 176 = 429

429 ÷ 11 = 39 teams in total

5. 156 x 3 = 468 cars

468 ÷ 5 = 93 r 3

Only 93 packs of 5 can be made with 3 leftover.

The Remainder

• A baker bakes 130 cakes. She puts them into boxes of 8. How many boxes will she fill?

130 8 = 16 r 2

or 16 8 = 128

16 full boxes

The answer is not exact so you will need to decide whether to round up or down in the answer.

130 cakes makes 16 complete boxes and 2 left over.

Only 16 complete boxes can be filled.

The Challenge• A class order some pizzas for a party. There are 30 children. Each child will have ¼ of a pizza. How many pizzas are needed?

Write your own ‘remainders’ word problem for a family member to

solve.

7 or 8 pizzas needed?

30 ÷ 4 = 7 r 2 (which represented as a fraction means 2/4 or ½)

7 whole pizzas and ½ a pizza needed.

So 8 pizzas are needed for every child to have a ¼ of the pizza with ½ a pizza left over.

How many 38p tins go into £5.00?

(division or multiplication)

Add together (addition)

Change from £5.00.

(subtraction)

0.38 x 10 tins = £3.80

0.38 x 3 tins = £1.14

13 tins altogether.

£3.80 + £1.14 = £4.94

£5.00 - £4.94 = 6p change.

Question 1

At the beginning of the day, a grocer has 239 apples. He receives another 144 from his supplier and sells 307 during the day.

Khalid calculates how many apples the grocer has by the end of the day.

307-239 = 68, 68 + 144 = 212 apples left.

Explain the mistake Khalid has made.

Come up with your own word problem with a mistake for a family member to spot.

Question 2

Write a word problem for which this calculation is used to find the answer.

£9.67 + £8.22 = £17.89

£3.49 + £5.75 = £9.24

£17.89 - £9.24 = £8.65

Check your problem with a family member.

What mistakes might someone make when trying to solve the problem?
