Personal Statement

Having enjoyed psychology-related activities in both academic and community settings, I am enthusiastic as I pursue a career in clinical psychology with a concentration in counseling victims of abuse and neglect. An important part of the pursuit toward my career in clinical psychology is attending graduate school.

Throughout my educational career, I have engaged in various activities to help me prepare for graduate study. One such activity is my involvement as a volunteer with my local church in teaching Sunday school classes for the parish’s young children. My duties as a volunteer educator involved preparing students to make their First Holy Communion and instructing them on the teachings of the Catholic religion. This experience was rewarding in that I was able to interact with children and provide a supporting learning environment.

Currently, I am a volunteer with the Lions organization, a non-profit organization that works to benefit blind and disabled individuals. During this experience, my responsibilities included facilitating fundraising events, such as auctions and benefit dinners. Participating in the Lions organization has also been a gratifying experience in that I enjoy helping the less fortunate.

My work experience has also contributed to my desire to pursue a career in psychology in that I enjoy working with people. My last couple of administrative positions involved dealing with customers on a daily basis, interacting with coworkers in a collaborative effort to complete complex assignments and required effective problem-solving skills.

After the completion of my Bachelor’s program with Argosy University, it is my goal to participate as a volunteer within a local medical facility to engage in duties that will further advance my knowledge in the field, enhance the skills of effective communication and professionalism.

I believe that through my experiences, I have become a well-rounded person while building a strong foundation for future graduate study. I have become proficient with various computer programs such as Windows, Microsoft Office, and database programs. Despite my participation in volunteer activities and working full-time, I have been able to remain focused enough to graduate in two and a half years while maintaining a 3.52 GPA.

Having been involved in psychology through these various experiences has enhanced my interest in becoming a clinical psychologist. I am particularly intrigued with psychological research in regard to child abuse and intervention programs. Therefore, upon receiving my Master’s in Counseling Psychology, it is my goal to obtain a position that will allow me to serve my interests in counseling victims of abuse and formulating intervention programs to reverse the effects of abuse.

Reflection

In reflection of my academic tenure at Argosy University, I can only speak positively about my experience. Getting acquainted with the online atmosphere at Argosy was very exciting and interesting. I had many reservations in my selection of pursuing my degree via an online program rather than attending a physical campus, but after navigating the classroom and getting to know the staff and students at Argosy, I quickly became confident that I had made the right decision. The University’s emphasis and dedication toward constant communication, attentiveness, and support made the transition process very comfortable and the atmosphere proved to be more personable than my past collegiate experiences.

Through my academic experience with Argosy over the past three and a half years, I have been able to truly see the magnitude of my potential and have developed a very solid and clear goal structure. With the support of the Argosy staff, faculty and fellow students, I have gained indestructible confidence and passion to facilitate my achievement toward my career goals.

Through successfully navigating the BA program in Psychology, I have developed the strong cognitive abilities of critical thinking and information literacy through significant exposure to a wide range of psychological perspectives and theories and integrating both personal experience and scholarly research to be able to analyze the complexity of a given issue. My extensive exposure to methods of research has enabled me to correctly summarize research designs, statistical and evaluative tools and research findings and utilize sound reasoning as a basis for criticizing research results.

Additional strengths that I have developed through my studies at Argosy have been extensive interpersonal and effective communication skills, a strong understanding on the issues and challenges related to ethics and diversity in the field of psychology, and a strong knowledge of applied psychology in personal, social and organizational settings.
