Bombay Time and Calcutta Time were defined in 1884 and the latter survived until 1948, when it was replaced by IST. Calcutta Time was 24 minutes ahead of IST. Another unofficial convention was the ‘bagan time’, which is a whole hour ahead and was designed to allow tea gardens to get their work done by daylight alone.

Why is ‘bagan time’ in the news currently?

A disingenuous accounting practice in which periods of good financial results are used to create reserves that shore up profits in lean years. “X accounting” is used by a company to smooth out volatility in its financial results, thus giving investors the misleading impression that it is consistently meeting earnings targets. This reliable earnings performance is generally rewarded by investors, who assign the company a premium valuation. Regulators frown on the practice since it misrepresents a company’s performance, which may be very different in reality from what it purports to be.

The term may be derived from the fact that a company which employs this practice dips into the “X” of reserves whenever it feels like it. But the company may have to pay a steep price if it is caught with its hand in the proverbial X.

WTGW X is a term for a project developed by a small and loosely structured group of people who research and develop a project for the sake of radical innovation.

The term originated with Lockheed Martin’s WW2 X project, when the P-80 Shooting Star was designed by their Advanced Development Projects Division in Burbank. Strong smells from a nearby factory wafting int their tent made R&D workers think of the foul-smelling X factory in Al Capp’s Li’l Abner.

Other projects include Google X Lab, or the one set up by Steve Jobs to develop the Macintosh computer located behind the Good Earth restaurant in Cupertino.

Following the trip he contacted a group of his friends to assist him in forming ROWW with the purpose of filling this unmet need.

Roger Rodas was the CEO of Always Evolving, a Valencia-based high-end vehicle performance shop owned by X. Rodas became X’s financial adviser in 2007 and helped establish ROWW.

This effect refers to auditors performing more careful due diligence when auditing companies in order to prevent accounting errors. This extra level of accounting scrutiny often leads to companies restating earning even though they have not necessarily intentionally misrepresented material accounting information.

It takes its name from the accounting firm X, which was indicted in a number of accounting scandals in relation to the Enron collapse. It usually occurs as a result of change in accountants.

It is an investment strategy in which one investor allows a second investor to control where and how to invest the capital. The X investment will usually be used when one of the parties lacks the ability of confidence to invest for themselves. The strategy will place trust in someone else’s ability to gain profits.

2

Page 39: E-Cell Biz Quiz Finals

Sidecar investment The word "sidecar" refers to a motorcycle sidecar; the person riding in the sidecar must place his or her trust in the driver's skills. This differs from coattail investing, where one investor mimics the moves of another.

Apples have become a symbol for the X company.

The story behind it is that X put out a bowl of apples at the reception of his office when he opened his door in the middle of the Great Depression. People were skeptical about opening in the middle of the depression and said that it wont be long before X would be selling apples on the street.

Apples continue to be a symbol of X’s hospitality and success throughout the years.

What did they do?In 2010, to achieve a uniform look among their airhostesses, Indigo enforced a bizarre policy.

“We wanted the crew to have a young and international look,” explained stylist Ambika Pillai, who has been grooming the Indigo crew since its inception four years ago. “Long hair or hair buns would not go with the image,’’ she said.

There was some initial resistance to the policy. “You can’t force a person,” the source added, though Pillai claimed she has not received any complaints from the crew.

Back in 2003 when X was in production, Universal bowed to incredible pressure from fans and released early footage of the special effects. The plan was to get the fans talking and build up word-of-mouth. However, the special effects were in the early stages and were so bad that the buzz it generated killed any chance the film had. The same happened to Catwoman with the early look at Halle Berry's outfit.

What is this effect called?

ID the character/book The X curve is a chart plotting the (positive) relationship between inequality and intergenerational social immobility in several countries around the world.

The curve plots "intergenerational income elasticity"—i.e. the likelihood that someone will inherit their parents' relative position of income level—and inequality in the United States and twelve other developed countries, though some versions of the curve include developing countries.

The name of the curve refers, somewhat ironically, to a character from a famous novel who shows a high degree of mobility, rising from being a bootlegger, to leading the Long Island north shore social set
