I think Peosta should be known for its six sounds: highway traffic hum, ball park hurrah, trains, Industrial Park presses, Izaac Walton League gun range, and that frog or insect noise on the east side of train track in the spring. The frog or insect noise is a totally unique, high pitch, chirp. It sounds like a bird stuck in the attic. But I like the sound. With the public auction coming on June 8, it would be great to have material for next week’s article. The building and con- tents, such as pews and statues, will be sold. • The NICC constructed house at 323 Bryn is completed. Terry Burds, NICC Carpentry instructor, supervised the construction of the home by NICC Carpentry Construc- tion class students. At noon, there are two routes offered, a 24-mile and a 38-mile bike ride out and back loop that takes you from Junction 21 to stops in Epworth, Farley and Dyersville before turning around and heading back. The full loop is around 38 miles with the option to turn around at Farley for a 24 mile ride. At Junction 21 following the ride, there will be music by Mike McAbee. Stir ingredients until well blended. Roll teaspoons full of dough into balls and drop into confectioner’s sugar. Once sugared, put them on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 6 to 9 minutes in preheated oven at 375 degrees F. • Dubuque has its Five Flags. Cedar Rapids is known for its five smells. I think Peosta should be known for its six sounds: highway traffic hum, ball park hurrah, trains, Industrial Park presses, Izaac Walton League gun range, and that frog or insect noise on the east side of train track in the spring. The frog or insect noise is a totally unique, high pitch, chirp. It sounds like a bird stuck in the attic. But I like the sound. Let me know if you know what makes the chirp.

• I am looking for history on Lattnerv-ille Church, the limestone church northwest of Graf. With the public auction coming on June 8, it would be great to have material for next week’s article. The building and con-tents, such as pews and statues, will be sold.

• The NICC constructed house at 323 Bryn is completed. Terry Burds, NICC Carpentry instructor, supervised the construction of the home by NICC Carpentry Construc-tion class students. Heating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) instructor Bob Orr worked with his students in the Heating and Air Conditioning class to install those features in the home as part the hands-on learning.

•If you have neighborhood kids looking for something to do, make sure you hand off this newspaper to them. There are tons of great ideas on activities to do.

•On Sunday, May 26, 10:30-noon, there is a “Wildflower Walk” at Swiss Valley Nature Center. Hike through the forest with a naturalist to explore the spring wildflowers bloom-ing on the preserve.

• Western Dubuque Wrestling Camp will be held June 5-7. Kindergarten through fourth grade is 8-9:30 a.m. and fifth through eighth grade is 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $25.Contact Paul Cleary at [email protected].

•Summer camps at NICC Peosta Campus: Kids on Cam-pus, July 29-Aug. 2, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Your kids will enjoy the fun classes and crazy experiments they will participate in during this week long camp. “Kids on Campus” provides a creative learning environment and introduces new con-cepts in a fun and interactive way. • Congrats to the Peosta students who qualified for State Track. Maria Brown and Emily Ney went from Beckman High School. Rachel Demmer, Michelle Fagerlind, Molly Lembezeder, Sierra Tentis, Jessia Wilming, Nolan Baum-hover, Jordan Huntington, Dylan James, Cody Reimer, and Nick Webber represented Western Dubuque.

• The third annual Outrun the Rays will take place on Saturday, May 25. It is a non-profit organization promot-ing “Rays” awareness to increase education about mela-noma and prevention. More than 68,000 Americans are diagnosed annually with melanoma. You can preregister now. The 5K Run/Walk registration is from 8-8:45 a.m., with the Run/Walk starting at 9 a.m. at the Peosta Community Centre. At noon, there are two routes offered, a 24-mile and a 38-mile bike ride out and back loop that takes you from Junction 21 to stops in Epworth, Farley and Dyersville before turning around and heading back. The full loop is around 38 miles with the option to turn around at Farley for a 24 mile ride. At Junction 21 following the ride, there will be music by Mike McAbee. • The Carter Cocayne Benefit will be on Saturday, June 1, 5-7:30 p.m. at Courtside, in Dubuque. Dinner is at 5-7:30 with silent auction. Carter, the son of Angie and Jim Co-cayne, of Dubuque, was born in October, 2012 with heart defects and Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome). Donations can be made at DuTrac Community Credit Union.

• The Peosta/NICC Library GAB Book Discussion on June 27 will be “Quaker Summer,” by Lisa Samson. This is a Christian fiction book, chosen as Women of Faith’s Novel of the Year.

• Golfing for a Cause fundraiser is scheduled to take place on Monday, Aug. 5 at the Peosta Community Cen-tre. There will be a dinner and auction starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased at the Centre. These funds help “offset” costs for families in need for memberships and children events.

• Check out the Outdoor Learning Lab at NICC-Peosta in

spring. This site offers nearly 30 acres of native ecosystems with trains and opportunities for recreation, observation, and self-guided or hosted visits. Beyond offering the largest public park in Peosta city limits, the Outdoor Learning Lab has been constructed and maintained primarily through private donations. • Registration for Western Dubuque Youth Tackle Foot-ball and Cheer has begun. Register online at www.wdy-outhsports.teampages.com. The football divisions are for first through sixth grades.

• The Western Dubuque Spring Pops Concert was awe-some on Monday evening. I can’t believe all the talented seniors from Peosta in the different choirs: Kirsten Ander-son, Mariah Balmer, Bre Honkomp, Chance Ingles, Rachel Jackson, Lauren Peterman, Natalie Recker, Bree Stillmunk-es, Trevor Then, Larissa Wilming. Sorry if I missed anyone.

•Awesome night on May 15. The WD School-To-Work Reception had several businesses from Peosta supporting this venture: Subway, Peosta Elementary – Colleen Lake, Premier Tooling, Inventory Trading Company, Mi-T-M Cor-porations. I spotted several students from Peosta who par-ticipated: Kyle Bergfeld, Dallas Clasen, Stacy Kass, Megan Rauen, Natalie Recker, Logan Richardson, Kathy Rondeau, and Bri Stillmunkes.

•Card shower request: Dorothy King, 9022 Maywood Cir., LaBelle, FL 33935. She used to live one mile east of Divine Word Seminary. The request is from Doris McClun, her daughter. Dorothy will be 90 years old on May 29, Me-morial Day. Cards are a great enjoyment to her.

•Here’s an easy lemon cookie recipe from Doris McClun: one lemon cake mix package, two eggs, 1/3 cup vegetable oil, one t. lemon extract, ½ cup confectioner’s sugar. Stir ingredients until well blended. Roll teaspoons full of dough into balls and drop into confectioner’s sugar. Once sugared, put them on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 6 to 9 minutes in preheated oven at 375 degrees F. The bottoms will be light brown and the insides chewy.

• When a girl lost her first tooth, she asked if the tooth fairy would bring her 50 cents. Her mom said, “I only got a dime for my tooth.” The daughter replied, “Mama, maybe your tooth was rotten.”
