It was lovely to wake up today to some rain and an incredible sunrise.

here I am currently staying the property is on tank water and supplies are getting low. We have also had some savage frosts

the last few weeks and the burnt grasses desperately needed some rain. The taps were actually frozen in the horse paddocks a few weekends ago.

Round Corner has been buzzing with all the winter sales and there are some really good bargains in the boutiques and shoe shops in and around the Centre. There is a glut of winter stock left due to the very warm autumn and there is still be plenty of time to get some good wear from winter clothing and shoes.

Remember to check out all the fresh fruit and vegetables, gourmet butcher and delicatessen in Dural Mall. You can get some lovely half prepared dishes from the butcher that just need cooking, homemade soup from the fruit bowl and gourmet homemade meals and desserts from the delicatessen.

In conclusion my heart goes out to the lives lost in three separate plane crashes over the last week. My thoughts and I am sure many people across the planet are sending their thoughts to the distressed families and friends having to deal with their sudden and tragic losses.

Held on Saturday November 8, the event features some of Australia’s best country music talent at one of Sydney’s most unique and historic venues.

olden Guitar winning duo McAlister Kemp, ARIA winning trio The McClymonts and huge country talent Beccy Cole will headline a sensational

line-up which features Luke O’Shea, Wagons, The Viper Creek Band, Chelsea Basham and Ashleigh Dallas. “I’m really looking forward to the 2014 Sydney Country Music Festival. I love seeing such a fantastic event at a unique venue like Bella Vista Farm Park,” Mayor Byrne said.

“We’ve managed to secure some of the best country music artists in Australia and I can’t wait to see them perform on the day.”

Follow the Sydney Country Music Festival on Facebook or visit http://www.sydneycountrymusicfestival.com.au for details and tickets.

A section of historic River Road that collapsed into the Hawkesbury River has been fully restored following extensive geotechnical studies and delicate construction work.

ollowing extremely heavy rain in March 2012, the embankment at Wisemans Ferry collapsed, taking a

portion of River Road. Temporary measures were put in place so that the road could remain open while detailed studies, design and construction were undertaken.

Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne thanked residents

and motorists for their patience. “I had a look around at the restored section of River Road and it was an incredibly complex job,” Mayor Byrne said. “Council’s Waterways team have had to work with a variety of Government bodies and stakeholders including Roads and Maritimes Services, NSW Department of Primary Industries, Endeavour Energy and Telstra on this massive project.”

The project cost $388,000, more than 90% of funding coming from the Federal Government’s Natural Disaster Relief fund, administered by the NSW Government.

With a new Club House, new Lights and plenty of enthusiasm in the lead up to and after the World Cup Hills Hawks Football club is ramping up its development program for the youth of our area.

ills Hawks Football club has put player

development at the top of its list and the first step has been funding the services of Paul Wade, Ex Socceroo player and captain as our Techinical Director for season 2014. Every Tuesday night Paul has been on hand to help Coaches and Players, ranging from simple advice to coaches and players, to demonstration of drills with individual teams and coordination of mini world cup nights with the younger teams. The kids are having an absolute ball and all think Paul is great. For the Coaches who are mostly parents with limited to no football background Paul has provided them with guidance and confidence to contribute to the kids development in a positive way. The club is now gathering feedback from all the Coaches who have been involved with Paul so planning for 2015 can begin and the development program can continue. As this season starts to wrap up we are looking forward to many teams competing in Finals Series and then start preparing for next season.

Dooral Roundup – August 20148

On Sunday 31 August Glenhaven Public School will be holding its annual Spring Fair in the school grounds on Glenhaven Road.

his year the Spring Fair will also form part of a very special celebration for the school - its 125th anniversary!

To celebrate, individuals and families will have a chance to purchase a paver that can be personalised with their own name or message and then laid on the school grounds as part of a commemorative open learning area. This patchwork of past and present students, teachers and families will serve as a permanent reminder of the school’s history, the contribution it has made to the local community, and the special place it holds in the hearts of many former students and teachers.

Glenhaven Principal Mrs Kerry Maxwell is delighted with the commemorative project. “I think it’s a wonderful idea. Glenhaven has an amazing sense of community spirit and that sense of belonging that people feel at the school will be captured in a permanent addition to the school grounds. Having a stall at the 2014 Spring Fair where people can order the pavers allows past and present students, teachers and families alike to spend the day at the school, enjoy the atmosphere of the Fair, see how the school has changed over the years and reflect on their time here. We hope to see as many current and former students and teachers here as possible!”

Glenhaven Public School P&C President, Mrs Kath dalla Fontana is hoping that 2014 will be the biggest and best year ever for the Spring Fair. “The Fair is our most important fundraising opportunity at Glenhaven. The funds raised this year will be used to purchase new technology that will help to support 21st century learning within the school. It’s great that we are setting the foundations for future learning at Glenhaven in a year that also celebrates our past. We really are combining the past, present and future in 2014!”

The Glenhaven Spring Fair will hold all of the usual attractions such as food stalls, the Mega Raffle, the ever-popular white elephant, home-made cakes and entertainment on the centre stage as well as a giant marquee with market stalls. It will also feature a variety of rides, including a roller coaster for the first time ever, and the dunking machine is back! The school

welcomes all members of the community to attend the Spring Fair and enjoy a fun-filled, family day out.

Hornsby Shire Council and Bendigo Bank Galston have joined forces to upgrade the lighting at Hayes Oval.

he upgrade was on Council’s list of planned future works, but a $40,000 donation from Bendigo Bank allowed the

first stage of the job to be brought forward.“Council and the wider community are very grateful to Bendigo Bank for this generous donation that will help our local sports stars, both young and old,” Hornsby Mayor Steve Russell said. “It’s a great example of Council working together with local businesses to achieve results for the local community.”

The addition of two extra light poles allows the entire park to be utilised after dark. “It’s fantastic,” Hills Hawks Football Club president Adam Smith said. “It’s opened up the entire paddock and creates a lot more area for the teams to train and play. It’s also a lot safer. On behalf of Hills Hawks I want to thank both Bendigo Bank and Hornsby Shire Council very much.” The lights will also be very useful in summer for sports such as softball.

The donation from Bendigo Bank is just the latest instalment of around $1.5 million that has been given to the local community over the past decade. “It was great for Council and the bank to be able to work together on this project to help the community,” bank director and Galston resident Gavin Koorey said.

Stage two of the project, which will further upgrade lighting at the oval, is currently scheduled for 2015/16.

Australian Rugby SchoolboyThe Australian Rugby Championships were held at St Ignatius College Riverview during the recent school holidays.

akhill College had four students playing at the tournament after impressing selectors in the victorious Independent Secondary Schools’

team. Lachlan Anderson, Harrison Goddard and James Day added to the list of Oakhill NSW representatives while James Partridge took an unusual path to state representation.

With injuries to the Northern Territory front row, James, the Oakhill College First XV Captain was called into the Northern Territory side for the remainder of the tournament, becoming Oakhill’s first ever Northern Territory representative. From the games throughout the weeklong competition, Harrison Goddard was selected into the Australian Schools side and Lachaln Anderson was named in the shadow squad.

Harrison said. “It is a real privilege to represent Australia in a sport I enjoy playing and I am truly grateful to have this opportunity. I appreciate the support and encouragement I have always been given by my family, my coaches over the years and the wider Oakhill Community.”

Harrison becomes the seventh student in Oakhill’s history to be selected in the Australian Schools’ Rugby Side. Andrew Wisemantel, Oakhill College’s Head of Sport commented “Harrison’s selection in the Australian Schools side is a fantastic achievement and just reward for his effort and commitment that he has shown since starting at Oakhill in Year 7. His humble approach makes it even more satisfying to see him reach this elite standard in his chosen sport. All the coaches and team-mates that he has had over the years are extremely proud of Harrison.

Everyone that is involved in the College, directly or indirectly, look forward to Harrison representing us as our 7th Australian Rugby Schoolboy.”

Rarely does Hollywood give us deep philosophical glimpses into the human soul. However, one line from The West Wing does just that.

ed Bartlet, portrayed by Martin Sheen, said in a debate, “every once in a while, there’s a day with an

absolute right and an absolute wrong, but those days almost always include body counts”.

And so it is with Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, which was shot down in Ukrainian air space last week.

Having served as a peacekeeper in a region split by ethnic tension, I must admit that I did have some sympathy for those ethnic Russians living in eastern Ukraine.

Everything about them screamed they were from Russia: their culture, their language, their history.

Even during disputes, uprisings, occupations, rebellions and all manner of instability in the region, I maintained some sympathy for their situation.

However, with one act of barbaric proportions which defy all rules of warfare, civilisation and humanity, those who claim to speak for those ethnic Russians have forfeited their right not just to be taken seriously, but to even have their grievances heard.

To enter into a dispute with nations over borders and geopolitics is perfectly acceptable, but the moment any person or organisation starts to make innocent civilians the victims of their powerplay is the moment they declare themselves beneath our contempt.

This crime goes beyond any human standards, and those who perpetrated it should be hunted down and dealt the harshest of justice.

The state’s peak business organisation, the NSW Business Chamber, has called on senators to pass the Federal Government’s Asset Recycling Fund Bill and vote down the duplicative and unnecessary amendments proposed by Labor and the Greens.

hese proposed amendments

put NSW in a state of political double jeopardy. NSW Premier Mike Baird has put forward an ambitious plan to lease the state’s electricity network and reinvest those funds in much needed urban and regional infrastructure. Mr Baird has staked his political future on this plan and will be taking his proposal to the State election in March. The amendments proposed by Greens and Labor would mean that even if the people of NSW supported the Premier’s plan, we would still have to run the gauntlet of the Senate to receive $1.9 billion in additional funding for much needed new investment in roads, rail, hospitals and schools. It needs to be remembered that much of the incentive offered by the Government will be derived from its windfall gains on company tax when NSW leases the poles and wires.

Senators should not be playing politics with NSW’s infrastructure needs.

A new independent assessment of The Hills Shire Council’s finances have underlined its status as one of the most well managed local government areas in NSW.

ew analysis by NSW T-Corp reveals that Council’s current financial status has been upgraded from sound

too strong. Council is also forecast to operate at a surplus for at least the next 10 years, excluding all capital grants and contributions.

This Council has come a long way from being on the brink of insolvency 20 years ago to now being one of the strongest local government areas in the state. Council was one of the biggest spenders

on roads and footpaths and that was reflected in its strong asset management rating.

We strive to do our best to look after our roads, footpaths, parks, reserves and facilities while living within our means. We are custodians of ratepayer’s assets and money so we scrutinise how we spend and that’s exactly what the community would expect of us.

This is the result of the work of Hills Shire Councillors and staff past and present and I thank them for their wonderful service.

One of Hornsby Shire Council’s best programs, the Home Modification and Maintenance Service, is one that we’d like more people to know about.

his fantastic service has been running for more than 20 years, with Council staff working hard to improve

home safety for eligible residents. It provides small-scale modification and maintenance works on the houses of residents to help them keep living safely in their own homes for as long as possible. It is available for the frail aged and people with a disability, as well as their carers, and modification works require a referral from an occupational therapist. Costs vary, with the price for modifications based on the income of the client. Works that have been performed in client’s houses include hand rails, handheld showers, ramps and wedges along with minor electrical, plumbing and carpentry maintenance. These all help clients live more comfortably and accessibly in their homes. Everyone deserves to feel safe and comfortable in their own homes and I encourage everyone eligible for this service to consider using it.

REPRESENTING OUR AREA

This month we witnessed the latest step in the Government’s reform process for a more prosperous and productive economy with the repeal of the Carbon Tax.

ince the former Labor Government’s

introduction, on a lie, households and businesses have been hit with additional costs in their bills with no positive effect on the environment. Only recently I visited Tony at my local dry cleaner who informed me that his electricity bill had risen from $2,000 per quarter to $2,000 per month since the introduction on the Carbon Tax. The Federal Government has placed provisions in the repeal to ensure that the ACCC and other departments monitor prices to ensure households receive a reduction. I am hopeful that for businesses like Tony that costs will reduce and he will return to productivity and profitability.

Redfield College in Dural is the latest to suffer from a fire on their premises. I was sad to hear that late at night a fire broke out in their technology hub causing over $100,000 worth of damage. I would like to commend the response of the local Rural Fire Brigades. They were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other buildings to cause more havoc.

Finally I’d like to make the point to constituents that while there have initially been a few bumps in the Senate, you do finally have a responsible Government that is keeping it’s election promises and spending wisely.

Last week I joined the teachers and students at Glenorie Public School for a memorial service to remember Giulia Lo Grasso.

rs Lo Grasso was a much loved teacher at Glenorie Public School for over 20 years before she was

tragically killed in a car crash earlier this year. The memorial service attended by over 100 people was

a fitting tribute to Mrs Lo Grasso who served the school community in a number of roles as a multicultural leader and an Italian community languages teacher.

Mrs Lo Grasso was well known in the local Glenorie area and will be dearly missed by her husband son and many friends.

To honour her memory the students unveiled a plaque in honour of Mrs Lo Grasso’s service to the school, while each class planted an olive tree along the school path.

Mrs Lo Grasso was previously appointed to Glenorie Public School in 1994, working on several different grades.

In 2004 Mrs Lo Grasso retired only to take up the position of Italian teacher, which she has continued in for a further 10 years until 2014.

The Prime Minister has also established an online Condolence book visit https://www.pm.gov.au/mh17-condolences to leave your message of condolence to the families of those lost on Flight MH17.

15August 2014 – Dooral Roundup

The Repeal of the Carbon Tax is great news for local families and small businesses.

crapping the Carbon Tax will save the average household around $550 a year, including around $200

on the average household electricity bill and around $70 on the average gas bill. This will reduce cost of living pressures for all Australians.

The Government’s consumer watchdog, the ACCC, has been given extra funding and powers to ensure that savings are passed on to consumers.

Scrapping the Carbon Tax will also take a cost burden off local businesses. This will make it easier for them to compete and employ more people. Scrapping the Carbon Tax is just one part of our plan to build a stronger economy and create more jobs. It is also important we get the Budget under control, continue to reduce paperwork and build the infrastructure we need, like the NorthConnex.

The shooting down of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 was an unspeakable crime and the loss of 298 lives, including 37 Australians, a horrific tragedy. The Prime Minister, together with the Presiding Officers, have established a National Condolence Book so members of the public can record their condolence to the families and loved ones of those lost on Flight MH17. Sarah Wallace, the daughter of a member of the family of the aboriginal, Bungaree (who travelled around Australia with Matthew Flinders) and an English seaman, settled on the lower reaches of Marra Marra Creek with her lifelong partner, a convict lime burner known at first as Lewis Ferdinand.

erdinand is known to have been a Hanoverian German who fought with the British forces in the Peninsular War.

He was sentenced to life in NSW for desertion. By the 1830’s he was working with lime burners, John Grace and John

Hunter on the Hawkesbury. Lime for making mortar to hold bricks together was in

short supply in the early Colony, until deposits of limestone rock were discovered. Prior to that, the settlers recovered lime by burning the contents of Aboriginal middens of shellfish found along the Hawkesbury shores.

What the Aboriginal folk felt about this treatment of their middens is not known, but it supplied a practical living for people like Grace, Hunter and Ferndinand, and their families.

In the 1830’s, after surveyors had been through the Marra Marra Creek area, the limeburners were able to buy title to

the land areas they had been long settled on, at the mouth of the Creek near Bar Island. Since Ferdinand was still a convict, his wife Sarah obtained the title in her name.

Sometime later the couple dropped the use of the German surname Ferdinand and called themselves Sarah and John Lewis instead. This wiped out all memory of a convict past, as well as any German associations.

Their family became closely identified with the Anglican Church on Bar Island (now a ruin), and Sarah’s memory, particularly, lived on in local popular tradition as “Granny Lewis”.

If you want to find out more about Bar island and its history, Tom Richmond will be speaking about it at the June Roughley memorial Talk on Saturday , 16th August at 2pm, at the Arcadia Community Hall, just near Arcadia School. Afternoon tea will be served after the talk.

Entry is free, but bookings are advisable through Margaret McKinley on 9651-1495.

The 2014 Original Giant Book Fair heralded the biggest ever Giant Book Fair which was hosted by the Rotary Club of Galston.

appy book lovers were rewarded by the unique way in which the books were priced – by the inch! The books are

laid flat and charged by the height. The Rotarians of Galston were the first to use this unique was of selling used books some years ago and have kept the popular way ever since.

The large range of books in a wide variety of categories at super special prices included quality paper back and hard back fiction, nonfiction, biography and other categories. There was also a fantastic selection of relatively new and collectable books. The DVD’s, Cd’s and records were also well sort after.

“The love of books is certainly alive with hundreds of people visiting the Giant Book Fair over the weekend” said President Peter Ainscow (pictured).

The book fair is Galston Rotary’s major fundraiser for the assistance we give to local community needs as well as national and international projects and disaster relief.

noRTHHolM CelebRATes Pi DAyJuly 22nd saw all Northholm mathematicians, teachers and students, excited to celebrate Pi Day. The day (22) divided by the month (7) being very close to the value of Pi expressed to two decimal places. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize and to computationally calculate more and more digits which our students were fully absorbed in throughout the day. Allowing some latitude in the meaning of Pi, the day was celebrated at lunch time with the canteen preparing and selling handmade meat Pi’s, vege Pi’s and Pi-zza’s slices, all requiring the value of Pi to calculate circular areas and lengths. Our Maths classrooms were decked out with 314 cutouts of Pi and some students discovered that there really was an enjoyable side to the subject. As part of the day, the school community were asked to write a limerick. The following was judged to be the winner, and awarded a Pi T-shirt.

Avenue Q AT Hills GRAMMARThe cast and crew of Avenue Q – the School Edition, have enjoyed a terrific season with excellent audiences the School’s Performance Centre. This multi-Tony Award winning musical explores the relationships, personalities and social issues of a group of young graduate New Yorkers. A cast of large puppet and human actors deliver a contemporary and touching story with a staff and student band backing their every song. “We wanted a musical that suited a cast with strong acting and vocal skills and provided a challenge in terms of the themes and score. Avenue Q – School Edition suited our needs with an edgy and amusing storyline that would appeal to a high-school aged audience,” explained Hills Grammar Head of Music, Owen Nelson. “It’s been amazing to see how the puppet and actor, in each case, becomes a single entity. You might think it would be distracting, but it actually works very well.”

Year 12 student, puppeteer and actor Nisha Labade loves an acting challenge, “I love this musical because, not only do the normal rules apply, but the puppets add a whole new element of excitement and interest for an audience. The songs are catchy and hilarious.

The social themes within the play are written so well that it is clever, controversial and heart-warming all at once.”

Restaurant diners in France will now see a funny little symbol on their menus: a skillet with a house on top.

he symbol, indicating that your menu choice is made

in-house, is part of a new law meant to battle against the surprising amount of factory-made, pre-packaged food in French restaurants, and to celebrate the country’s culinary traditions. France’s chief of consumer affairs, Carole Delga, told The Associated Press that the logo would better inform customers about what they’re getting, and highlight restaurants’ craftsmanship. “It’s about sending a message that France is a country where we eat well, where we have skills, especially cooking skills,” she said. “We wanted to give concrete tools for tourists and for French people, and recognise cooking as an integral part of our French identity.”

While UNESCO put French cuisine on its World Heritage List in 2010, two recessions in recent years have driven more and more French chefs to resort to pre-packaged food to cut costs. France is a champion of industrial food, with companies specialised in frozen foods or dishes that can be prepared quickly and look homemade.

Parliament approved the law on March 17. Restaurants and catering companies have until January 1 to adapt their menus.

When someone says ‘Denmark’ the last thing that comes to mind is wine. You might start thinking bicycles, Princess Mary or incredibly tall people but we have our very own Denmark in Australia.

he Shire of Denmark is located on the south coast of Western Australia approximately 400 kms south of

Perth. The main local industries include tourism, viticulture, fishing, horticulture, aquaculture, agriculture, arts & cheese.

For most, Denmark W.A. seems as close as Denmark the country but fortunately a number of small wineries are getting their produce in bottle shops in the Eastern cities. This is fantastic news as the Denmark sub-region of Great Southern is exceptionally well suited to the growing of cool climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Be prepared to pay a little bit more for a bottle but the quality of wine will repay you tenfold. One winery whose wines you can find in decent bottle shops is Singlefile. The home of Singlefile is the Scotsdale Valley, just seven kilometers from Denmark on the southern tip of W.A.

Singlefile’s vineyard has near perfect conditions for growing cool climate chardonnay.

Billy Joel, the regular guy from Long Island who insists he’s not a very good piano player, will be the next recipient of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

e joins good company - the previous honourees are Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Sir Paul McCartney,

Carole King and the song writing duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Calling Joel a “storyteller of the highest order,” Librarian of Congress James Billington said in a statement that, “There is an intimacy to his song writing that bridges the gap between the listener and the worlds he shares through music. When you listen to a Billy Joel song, you know about the people and the place and what happened there.”

The prize, to be formally awarded with a luncheon and musical performance in Washington in November, is given by the Library as a lifetime achievement award to a living musical artist.

Joel, who had sold more records than any solo act except for Garth Brooks and Elvis Presley, has stated that he composed his songs by ear and said he could not score the music, leaving him, in his estimation, “not so good” at the instrument.

Your scores range from the high 80’s to the mid 90’s. If you can hit it reasonably straight and or have a predictable shot pattern, a medium spin 2 piece ball or 3-P hybrid ball would be a good choice. If your shot pattern is erratic, you should stick with a lower spinning 2 piece construction.

Many people are having problems with ducks around their swimming pool at the moment.

he waste the ducks leave behind can make the pool water unsafe for swimming also cause major problems with

phosphate levels and causing the pool to go green repeatedly. There are a few options to help keep ducks out of your

pool such as:1. The ducks land on the water so a pool cover will prevent them landing.2. Another option is to add a product that breaks the surface tension of the water which they find uncomfortable when they swim. “Duck Away” and “AlgiGuard” are the two best but it is important to over dose rather than under dose.3. The ducks tend to crop the grass areas around the pool for food and keeping this grass very short, if possible, gives them nothing to eat around your pool.4. If short grass is not an option you can put a liquid product on the grass and on the pool surrounds to deter them. These products do have quite a strong odour so if you don’t mind a bit of a smell for a while they are a great option. The two best products in this range are “Liquid Fence” and “Kings Duck Solution”. Do not use the Liquid Fence on pavers and other hard surfaces.5. A new dog will sometimes give the ducks a bit of a hassle but this will tend to become old fun for the dog if the ducks don’t get the idea fairly promptly.

When it comes to decorating it can be perceived an expensive task.

ut when money is scarce, I feel it’s just an opportunity to be more resourceful and creative. By re-purposing

old objects around your house or even simply adding a feature wall can offer new life and freshness to your home.

A new trend I’ve noticed is the use of vintage tea chests and crates which offer an artistic flare to your house but are a great form of storage with a rustic/industrial style character.

It’s amazing what an affect a fresh coat of paint can have on a room. Introducing a feature wall to a room can create a new energy and character and doesn’t cost a lot. Also, salvaging old items such as a tall boy or old chair with a new hue can give these items a second life.

A great feature I have come across recently is collecting mismatching door handles to use as decorative coat hooks. Mismatching offers a quirky feel, though I suggest finding similar sized handles to create an even balance over the project.

And lastly, consider reusing old picture frames. If the artwork feels a little out-dated now, consider reusing the frame for travel pictures, or family portraits – or for larger frames consider replacing the art for a mirror.

So if your homes are feeling stale, consider some of these useful ideas to refresh your home and save you dollars.

Choosing the right type of gravel for a driveway can help you create a beautiful and long lasting entry.

gravel driveway can create a distinctive entry to your property. There are many types of gravel for

a driveway, and each can add a different look to your home and landscaping. No matter what type of stone you choose, make sure that the stones have an angular shape. These types of stones are usually machine-crushed. Angular stones will lock together, reducing the movement caused by the weight of passing vehicles. Although they are attractive, rounded “river stones” will quickly slide out of place. Rounded or smooth stones will dramatically increase your maintenance requirements.

You’ll need several types of gravel for driveway construction that will last. The base layer of your gravel driveway should contain fist-sized stones. These stones will create a solid foundation for your gravel driveway. The second layer of your drive should contain golf ball-sized stones. The final layer of your gravel drive should contain stones a bit larger than a thumbnail. Look for “traffic bound” or “dense grade” stones. This type of gravel has stone dust mixed in and forms a hard, cement-like surface as it settles.

For advice on all you gravel needs please contact me at Langland s Landscape Supplies.

Home loans are even more affordable with three of the country’s largest banks slashing their fixed longer-term interest rates of less than 5 per cent.

he Commonwealth Bank, National Australia Bank and Westpac became the latest banks to cut

fixed rates, each giving customers the chance to secure historically low borrowing costs over the longer term.

The moves are the latest signs of rivalry between banks in the $1.3 trillion mortgage market, but also reflect changes in global financial markets.

According to Real Estate News and a recent SMH article the Commonwealth Bank’s general manager of home loans, Clive van Horen, said it had been able to cut fixed interest rates because of changes in global money markets which had made it cheaper for banks to raise longer-term funds.

Fixed rates are influenced by the outlook for the cash rate - which the Reserve Bank has left on hold at a record low of 2.5 per cent for almost a year. The annual rate of inflation hit 3 per cent in the June quarter, the top of the Reserve Bank’s target zone. This has stirred some discussion that the central bank will cut interest rates further in an attempt to stimulate the economy. ANZ Bank interest rate strategist Zoe McHugh said markets were pricing in a 35 per cent chance of a 0.25 percentage point cut from the Reserve by December, and a 50 per cent chance of a cut by February.
