WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY 2018
Last Friday was national Walk Safely to School Day, and DCS students had the opportunity to participate thanks to the generosity of staff who provided ‘walking buses’ from intersections around Dunedoo. Students enthusiastically joined in with their walking bus, and walked together full of chatter and excite-ment.
CONGRATULATIONS to all students who participat-ed, and a big THANK YOU to Mrs Gallagher, Ms Gavin and Lisa Johnstone (who walked despite her malfunctioning knee). It was a great way to start the day!
Welcome to Week 4
Congratulations to our “Art for Youth” Committee for another fantastic Whole School
Staffing Day. Our students are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with a
variety of very talented Artists who willingly give up their day to provide these activities
for our students. Thank you to the Staff who coordinated the day: Ms Kelly Smyth, Mr Ben
Kline, Mrs Jen Armstrong, Mrs Belinda Fergusson, Mr Shane Hall and Mr Rob Lockett.
A huge thank you also to Mrs Margaret Scifleet, Staff and students from the Hospitality de-
partment who again catered for the “Art Unlimited” Cocktail Party. As usual the food was
splendid and plentiful!
Thank you also to the parent helpers who worked over the weekend for the P&C to Cater
for Lunch, Morning and Afternoon tea for visitors to the Art Show. A very special thankyou
to Ms Fiona Van Huisstede, Mrs Lisa Christensen and Mrs Sam Wentworth Brown who
worked both Saturday and Sunday, a great effort Ladies! Thank you to people who donat-
ed cakes and slices or assisted with cooking last Thursday evening.
Thank you to Lleyton Allison, Tyson Craggs and Byron Brown, who all assisted last week
with the hanging of the Art for Art Unlimited. It is wonderful to see young people willing to
assist with community events such as this.
Last week, students from years 3, 5, 7 and 9 all successfully completed NAPLAN. Thank you
to the Staff who helped with the extra breakfasts on each of the NAPLAN test days and to
the P&C for their donation towards funding this program. NAPLAN reports will be issued
during term 3.
Congratulations to Harry Cluff who was selected in the West-
ern Region PSSA Rugby Union team last week. Harry will
now compete at the State Carnival at Coffs Harbour in Au-
gust.
Good Luck to all students who will compete in the Cross
Country Carnival on Thursday. I look forward to seeing the
results!
Have a great week!

Homework Centre Infants/Primary Homework Centre is open on Wednesday afternoons from 3:05 to 4pm in the library an-nexe. Homework centre is operated by teachers who VOLUNTEER their time to support students to com-plete their weekly homework tasks. Students are required to bring their homework sheets with them to homework centre. Students who arrive without their homework sheets will be given work to complete.
Everyone enjoyed the Art for Youth whole school staffing day. It was wonder-ful to see so many engaged and excited students participating in clay art, abo-riginal animal making, watercolour painting, story board drawing and screen printing onto tea towels. It was great to join and get a little dirty creating with the kids. A massive thank you to Mr Kline and the team who did a fantastic job organising the day. Thank you as well to St Michaels and the preschool; it was great to meet you all. Thank you to the artists who shared their expertise with us as well. We hope you get an opportunity to visit the Art unlimited exhibition in the hall if you haven't been already. We have a busy week 4 with normal routines of homework centre on Wednes-day. Our Cross country is this Thursday 24th May and we will continue to practise and get ready. Please remember to label all jumpers and jackets so that they can be returned if misplaced. Have a great week. Ms Michelle Gavin, Assistant Principal Infants
Kindergarten / Year 1: Art for Youth last Friday was an
amazing day. Students certainly unlocked their inner artist and the creative results were wonderful! Please remember with the tea towels: they need to be ironed before washing! A big thank you to all our helpers and skilled artists on the day. The Cross Country Carnival is happening this Thursday afternoon and I hope many of you can come down to the Golf Course to watch the children run. I recommend students come dressed in their house colours (Bass: blue, Sturt: green & Evans: yellow). I will remind Kinder students what house they belong to but let me know if you are not sure. The Infants will race from 12.30pm. In class this week, K/1 will be studying the properties of 3-D shapes in Maths, training in Fitness for Thursday’s Cross Country Carnival and Year 1 will focus on verbs in Grammar. Over the next four Fridays K-6 students will be participating in a Go Go Golf Program with Sharon Nott. The program has been fully funded thanks to a Government grant and the students will love practicing and showing off their golfing skills especially with a trip to the Dunedoo Golf Course in the final week! Have a good week. Mr Ben Kline
Year 2/3: We enjoyed having Wendy in our room on Friday showing us all how to do watercolour
painting. This week we are learning about ee and ea words as well as continuing practice for the upcoming Spelling Bee. We have introduced 2 personal words into our spelling so that we are practising words from our writing. Due to the cross country on Thursday any library books can be returned on any day and we will organise a borrowing time. Please encourage your child to read aloud and return home readers-thank you for your patience with getting readers home. We have all just about recorded our first reading sample and we are uploading the recording to See saw. If you are unable to join the seesaw app and would like to see your child reading I am more than happy to text or email them to you. Just let me know. Have a wonderful week and please see me if you have any concerns or suggestions for how I can support your child. Ms Michelle Gavin
Students in Years 3 and 5 are to be commended on their efforts and attitude towards NAPLAN testing last week. Tests are not fun, and can be stressful, however, our stu-dents put in their best efforts with some even saying that they enjoyed the challenge! Thanks to Mrs Armstrong and Mrs Gallagher for supervising NAPLAN tests. Results will be available later this year. Our annual Art 4 Youth activities were once again a huge success, providing students with the opportunity to experience a variety of art techniques. Congratulations to all those who submitted an entry—we certainly have some talent at DCS! This week we have our PSSA Netball taking place in Dubbo on Wednesday. Thanks to parents who have volunteered to support our team. Good luck everyone! This Thursday we have our annual Cross Country, for which we have been practising during fitness sessions. Parents are en-couraged to come along to the golf course to help support this event. It’s al-ways a fun day! Finally a reminder that homework centre is operated by staff who volunteer their time to support students to complete homework. Therefore students attending homework centre are expected to bring their weekly homework sheets. Students arriving without homework will be given worksheets to complete. Homework centre operates on Wednesday afternoons until 4pm. Mrs Georgia Shephard - Assistant Principal Primary
Year 3/4: Hello everybody and welcome to Week 4 Term 2! Last
Friday, all students were involved in Art for Youth Workshops. The students got to experience a range of art media in the form of Aboriginal art inspired by our natural environment, water colour painting, clay sculpting, screen printing on tea towels, cartoon storyboarding techniques and finally a guided tour of the Art Unlimited Exhibition in the hall and Art for Youth entries in the library annex. I certainly enjoyed myself along with students in Year 5! This Thursday, we will be holding our annual X-Country event at the Sports Club. It would be great to see all of our students out on the track earning points for their sporting house. Students who win/place in their respective age groups will be eligible to represent DCS at Dubbo District later this term. Have a great week everyone and lets get running! Cheers, Mr A Honeysett
Year 5/6: Well done to Year 5 for their attitude and effort towards NAPLAN testing last week.
We had some minor anxieties, however, students all left their tests feeling positive and some even asked if they could do them more often! Year 6 had the opportunity to experience high school on Friday’s Art 4 Youth activities, which has helped to support our 6 into 7 transition program. They worked very well in all activities. With Netball and Cross Country this week, students are reminded that school work must take priority over sports, and are encouraged to ensure they keep up to date with work and homework tasks. Speaking of homework—it was handed out today and is due in on Friday or Monday. Have a great week. Mrs Georgia Shephard
Attention Year 10 –11 Students: Meningococcal ACWY Vaccinations for all Year 10 and 11 students were handed out to students last week. Please complete and return forms to the Front Office ASAP. Vaccinations are to be held at DCS On Tuesday, 22nd May 2018. Attention Year 12 Students: Please return permission notes and money for HSC Enrich-ment day by this Wednesday, 23rd May. Mr Hall
Mock Interviews Last Tuesday 4 Skillset team members travelled to DCS to interview Year 10 students for a part-time job at Ferg’s Fresh Foods! All students came thoroughly prepared for this activity by dressing appropriately, preparing an-swers to set questions and completing a resume. Students were interviewed individually and provided with per-sonalised feedback. From here, the panel selected 5 students to go through to interview finals-Zac, Georgia, Ha-ley, Valentina and Annie. These students then had to apply for a sight-unseen job in hospitality, engineering, mechanic, AIS and nursing-depending on their areas of interest in front of a panel of 4 interviewers. Congratulations to Haley Cox, first ($30 canteen voucher), Georgia Lane, second ($15 canteen voucher) and Zac Green, third ($5 canteen voucher). Skillset members then addressed all Year 10 students with interview and resume improvement techniques.
Art Unlimited Cocktail Party A huge thank you to the staff and students who helped cater for the Art Unlimited Official Opening last Friday evening. We catered for 250 people and it was a massive job and could have not have been done without the generous support of staff and students. Particular thanks to Linden Ewin, Nola Powers, Lucy Besgrove, Michelle Gavin, Vince O’Brien, Adele Stoddart, Maree Smith and Carolyn Sullivan.
DCS Hospitality students gave up their Friday night to prepare and serve food, special thanks to Hayden Brydon, Julie Lecomte, Nicole Cooke, Geor-gia Lane, Nakita Martin, Elle Lane and Sally Christensen.

Dunedoo Central School is collaborating with Smiles Onsite to promote healthier, happier smiles at our school! This incredible service is being offered for FREE under the federal government's Child Dental Ben-efits Schedule (CDBS), and comes along with the chance to grab some amazing prizes. All students will be given a consent form to bring home so that they can participate, and also so that they can go in the draw to win prizes!! How does it work? The Child Dental Benefit Schedule grants all eligible parents with $1000 worth of Medicare towards dental per child, over a two-year period. Eligible parents should receive a confirmation letter; however if you are still unsure, Smiles Onsite can check for you on completion of their consent form. Can I make use of this service if I'm not eligible? Of course! Smiles Onsite can do almost everything that your local dentist can do on board their state-of-the-art mobile Clinic. If you would like them to see your child for a scale and clean, fillings, fissure seals etc., these services can be offered with NO GAP payable. This service is a great opportunity to get kids into the habit of good oral hygiene, and we hope you're as excited about it as we are! You can fill out the dental consent form for your son or daughter by inserting this link on the web browser - https://form.jotform.co/81020553852854 If you have any further questions about this program or your eligibility, please contact Smiles Onsite di-rectly on 1800 276 453.
DCS BREAKFAST
CLUB REPORT Most people are aware that DCS runs a breakfast pro-gram on Thursday mornings before school, to provide students with something nice to eat before starting the school day. Our menu usually includes pancakes with maple syrup, scrambled eggs on toast, toast with vegemite or honey, and milo (warm or cold).
Most weeks we have an average of 55 students sign in for breakfast, from all grades K-12. This is a fantas-tic number, and it is great to be able to greet so many students in the morning to start the day off on a posi-tive note.
Last week during NAPLAN testing, our breakfast pro-gram was extended to ensure students had the op-portunity to eat a nourishing meal before heading in-to their tests. Thanks to the support of P&C, we were able to increase the amount of food as well as provide sausage sandwiches as a special treat. This was well supported by students, and each morning we had in excess of 75 students signing in!
Our breakfast program depends on volunteers, and I would like to thank all those who volunteered last week for the additional mornings. We couldn’t have done it without you.
Special thanks also to our regular weekly volunteers, in particular Tracey and Janelle, for your ongoing sup-port of this fantastic program.

Year 11 Snow Trip Fundraiser BBQ On Friday 18th May 2018, during the Art for Youth Whole School Staffing Day, members of Year 11 prepared a deli-cious sausage sizzle at lunch time. So popular did it prove that a number of customers had to be turned away because we ran out of sausages and bread. Nevertheless, a tidy sum of $203 was generated which will now be added to the Snow Trip Fund. Thank you to everybody who bought a sausage sandwich. Thanks also to Alan and Julie Stanford for their assis-tance. And, in particular, a big thank you to Bella, Skye, Nathan, Lochie, Brad, Teighla, Hayden, Nicole and Sally. Mr.Hall
