Sept 2014 2 Duncanrig News Start of Term As the new school session settles down I would like to take this opportunity to inform parents, carers and pupils that I have returned to Duncanrig following my 2 year secondment to SLC Headquarters in Hamilton. I am delighted to be back and feel as though I haven’t been away. I would like to express my thanks to Mr Randall and my staff for the work they have done over the last 2 years to maintain the high standards expected at Duncanrig. This work is reflected in our excellent national examination results that have just been issued to our pupils. Congratulations go to all our pupils who successfully gained awards in their SQA examinations. This year saw the introduction of the new National 4 and 5 awards and the performance of our S4 pupils indicates that they coped very well with the new arrangements. Our new timetable is up and running and shows a huge range of courses for our youngsters to pursue along with many activities in our extra-curricular programme. I would encourage all of our young people to grasp the many opportunities available to them and to participate fully in the life of our school. A list of some of the extra-curricular activities in Music and Sport are shown on the last 2 pages of this newsletter. I wish everyone all the best and every success for the year ahead. Training

Ice Bucket ChallengeAs part of their Leadership course, a group of S6 pupils volunteered to don “onesies” and complete the Ice Bucket Challenge. They also managed to persuade/cajole/bully Mr Wynne into doing likewise. They even supplied him with a dinosaur onesy to avoid him having any excuses.

Our new S1 pupils were invited to support the event by donating £1 to Motor Neurone Disease Scotland in exchange for being able to spectate at the event.

The “challenge” was a great success and a cheque for £250 has been sent to MND Scotland to support their research. As you can see from the photo, the pupils took great care to see that Mr Wynne was fully involved.

Duncanrig NewsAttention All Parents! Homework Club

Our Homework Club is now up and running and all pupils are encouraged to take advantage of it. The club runs every week from Monday to Thursday for an hour after school. It is run by S6 pupils who are there to help younger pupils with their class work and/or homework. They are very happy to help their peers as they try to make progress through their different subjects.

Not all the pupils seem to have tuned in to this message and this notice is to alert parents and carers to the existence of the club and the potential it offers to support pupils as they settle back into school. It is open to al l pupils but has particular importance to S1 pupils to develop good study habits at high school and to S4 and S5 pupils as they progress through national certificate courses.

The senior pupils are very keen and enthusiastic for the Homework Club to be a busy, vibrant place where pupils can help to support each other.

If you spent money last session buying revision guides, success guides and books of past papers, the S6 pupils who run the Homework Club have a cunning plan to get you half of your money back.

OR .............If you think that you are going to have to spend money this session buying revision guides, success guides and books of past papers, the S6 pupils who run the Homework Club have a cunning plan to save you half the cost.If you are interested in selling on old guides and past papers for half price to pupils who will need them this year please go along to the Library after school and speak to one of the Captains on duty. They will tell you about dbay!

Young Sport Ambassadors for Duncanrig

Their role is to motivate and inspire young people to take part in sport and physical activity by helping to organise programmes and events, promote lunch-time and after-school clubs and promote healthy lifestyles. Their notice board will be in the S6 Social Area next to the PE department. Look out for Alana and Scott in school.

Plea to Parents from the ladies in our School Office

Could you please ensure that you notify us when you change email addresses and mobile telephone numbers? Some of our communications to parents are “bouncing back” because house and mobile numbers and/or email addresses are no longer valid.

Parent Council Clothes Bank

Parents may not be aware that we have set up our own clothes bank. The bank is the brainchild of our Parent Council and sits at the front of our school on the path down to Duncanrig Sports Centre. The Parent Council has taken forward this initiative to raise funds for school activities. It is hoped to raise a four-figure sum each year to pay for extra-curricular equipment and transport costs for pupils representing our school in competitions and to help fund the costs of educational visits.

Please support this venture by depositing old clothes in the bank whenever you can. Your support will be greatly appreciated and help us support the huge range of activities that our pupils are able to take advantage of. I remember making the first deposit having “pruned” the wardrobes of my 4 children. Please dare to venture into the wardrobes and drawers of your children and fill some bags – it means less washing and ironing!

Outdoor jackets must be removed once pupils have entered school. Lockers are available for the storage of outdoor jackets. School blazers can be kept on in classes.

Duncanrig NewsOur Uniform Code

Our Uniform Code has been in existence for a number of years and was the result of consultation among staff, pupils and parents. It has made a positive contribution to our school ethos and is very straightforward.

Lowero Group does “Krispy Kreme”As you may be aware, a group of our senior pupils are going out to Lowero over the October Week break to lend support to the work being done at the Lowero Community Project by Gabriel Kijjambu and his team.Raising funds to cover the cost of the trip has been a major challenge for the pupils and their parents/carers. They have devoted a huge amount of time and effort organising a huge range of fund raising events. The latest example of this was the sale of Krispy Kreme doughnuts on Friday morning. The group would like to express their thanks to all the pupils who supported them by buying and eating a doughnut (or 2!) on Friday. Their selflessness is much appreciated!
