Tight Gauge at Switches
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority I General Items
Issue: When the switch is moved to the closed (normal) position, the distance from rail to rail (i.e., gauge) is outside design tolerance in the middle of the rail.
Evaluation: This condition existed at the #8 switches. There are 39 #8 switches on the project.
Solution: Have manufacturer adjust the switches to meet the advertised and specified tolerance. Progress: All switches have been reinstalled and meet the design tolerance.
22
Insulated Joints (IJ) Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority
Issue: In May 2018, misaligned and oversized holes were discovered in installed IJ. In June 2018, 27 IJ were replaced due to misaligned and oversized holes. In March 2019, eight additional locations were identified and were repaired.
Solution: Repair and replace IJs.
Progress: Identified corrections to IJ have been completed. In June, July, and August, 14 random IJ were selected and evaluated. No deficiencies were found. ATC and signal testing has been performed without any issues in the performance of the IJ.
23
Precast Cracks
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Inspector General Items
Issue: Hairline cracks observed at the exterior face of the precast wall, primarily identified on the South Elevation of SIB in July 2018.
Evaluation: Analysis performed determined that the cracks are a result of thermal movement in the exterior face of the panel.
Solution: Replace planned sealant with a sealant that will span the hairline cracks.
Progress: Sealant has been approved by Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (Airports Authority) and WMATA and application started the week of October 29, 2019.
24
Ballast
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Inspector General Items
Issue: WMATA has expressed concerns over the fines in the ballast.
Evaluation: Records of the ballast reviewed and verified to meet project requirements.
Solution: The Airports Authority and WMATA are discussing revising the requirements for ballast.
