What makes us the go to organization for young professionals throughout our community? In March, the executive and steering committees held our strategic planning session and came up with the following goals designed to assist you in your career and personal life. Let’s see how we are doing!

1. Development – We want to continue professional and personal development through our programming.

2. Connections – It is our goal to make YP the must-join organization. We want members to connect with other members, to meet professionals of all levels, to be a business resource to the community and to be present in the areas that our Chamber represents and where our members live, work and play every day. So far, so good. During this year, our membership has grown to over 1,200 members. The YP-Dyersville Chapter currently has 60 members. The chapter is robust and making great things happen.

3. Branding – We continue to make YP a recognized presence in our workplace and community. We want YP to be a known name in the business community and throughout our great city.

Meet the President

This year the YP Days of Caring program attracted over 1,200 volunteers and 50 projects serving 41 non-profit organizations. What a difference we can make.

We also host the YP After Work and our holiday Merry Mix and Mingle. We also know that there is need to keep connections with our educational institutions and company executives. We want to keep our graduates in Dubuque and make our CEO’s accessible. We see an easy transition from Future Young Professionals to Young Professionals to the Chamber of Commerce. Since July, I have held an ex-officio seat on the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors on behalf of Young Professionals. YP is headed in the right direction, we continue to welcome dedicated YP leaders to become active. Thank you for attending today’s YP Symposium! meghan hackett awardSince 2007, we have celebrated Meghan’s vision and each year

her legacy grows. Meghan was instrumental in spearheading the formation of Dubuque’s YP Chapter. Seven years later, we are a thriving organization with over 1,100 members.

Each year these members convene to better themselves as professionals; whether it be through luncheons or countless

social opportunities, every program allows young professionals an opportunity to connect with their peers.

Today is about remembering Meghan’s legacy and the vision she set forth for each of us. She lit a torch that is being handed off to

each and every one of you.

Event Kick Off featuring Derek Dachelet

Derek dacheletDerek Dachelet is the Dean of Industry, Trades and Agriculture

at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College located in Fennimore, Wisconsin. His educational background includes a Bachelor’s

degree in Business Administration from UW-Platteville, a Master’s degree in nonprofit management from Regis University, and he is

currently pursuing his doctorate degree in Educational Leadership (ABD) at Northcentral University.

Derek’s dissertation research involves defining the role and impacts that career and technical education college presidents

have on the establishment of collaborative industry partnerships. Since 2008, Derek has been an adjunct instructor for UW-

Platteville in a variety of graduate programs. Besides higher education administration and teaching, Derek’s occupational

background includes experience in nonprofit management, philanthropic development, public relations and marketing, sales

and customer service, manufacturing, and he has served in the active U.S. Army.

Derek lives in Belmont, Wisconsin with his wife MJ and their children.

Rick ellingsonRick is the Training and Development Manager at Bertch Cabinet in Waterloo, Iowa. His primary duties include leadership/management, quality, and safety training. He also creates and delivers training solutions for various areas within the company. Prior to joining the Bertch team, Rick was a consultant and trainer for Boys Town’s National Resource and Training Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Rick received his BT from the University of Northern Iowa and his MHD from the University of Kansas.

The FISH! Philosophy is a life-long learning approach that inspires us to feel alive and engaged in the work we do. David BeckerCustomer Service Leadership - Developing effective customer

service leadership — leadership that coaxes great behaviors and performance from your customer-facing employees— is a key to

creating a successful customer experience.

Once you find the employee with the right potential, how do you give a specific leadership mindset and methodology to bring out

that potential fully.

David Becker is the Chief Executive Officer for Cottingham & Butler. David’s responsibilities include overseeing sales, marketing,

and most of the operations for Cottingham & Butler and its subsidiaries.

Prior to joining Cottingham & Butler, David spent 8 years with McKinsey & Company in Chicago, where he was a Partner

specializing in issues related to strategy and marketing. Before McKinsey, David worked for IBM in a sales and marketing capacity.

David earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis, graduating magna

cum laude. David also holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School, graduating magna cum laude.

David serves on the Board of the Greater Dubuque Development Corporation, is a member of the Washington University Olin School

of Business National Council, and is currently the Director of the Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers. He is active in several civic and charitable organizations including Junior Achievement

and the United Way.

Sally Shaver-DuboisSally Shaver DuBois is from Ames and has been helping people smile and laugh for most of her life. She has been a teacher and coach for over twenty-five years helping young people learn about staying healthy and physically active in a creative and fun way. She currently teaches and works with student teachers in the department of Kinesiology at Iowa State.

In 1996, Sally began her journey as Silly Sally the Clown. She entertains people of all ages across Iowa at birthday parties, community events, churches, schools and libraries. She enjoys teaching kids and adults about nutrition, health and physical activity through her clown character and with puppets. She has released two children’s CD’s and a video. All of these projects promote active participation with her Silly Sally songs.

In February 2007, Sally became a Certified Laughter Leader through the World Laughter Tour. She and about 15 other people attended a two-day intensive course at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Zion, Illinois. From this training, she enjoys sharing how laughter and humor can improve health and enjoyment of life.
