Peak volunteer community organisation promoting culture and the arts in the region
As It Is – From Di Cultural activities do sustain and nourish us and here we are,
assuming survival mode in a challenging Dubbo winter.
Looking at what our vibrant local groups provide, and
professional touring companies bring to Town, we will be
sustained very heartily as we wait for springtime's warmth to
bring more cheer.
*The Dubbo Cultural Forum, well supported by many
community organisations (as is intended) is proving to be a
breeding ground for new and progressive ideas. One fairly
obvious notion is, to borrow from Gilgandra's example, the
advent of a designated role for a Cultural Development
Officer within the Dubbo City Council (DCC). This seems
all the more significant and vital with Dubbo's role as host of
ARTLANDS 2016, the Regional Arts Australia Conference
to be held in our fair city on October 26-30, 2016. As there
will be a fringe festival around this major event, where local
groups will become involved, interest is mounting right now
and a Cultural Development Officer would assist in
managing this enthusiasm and ideas being offered to our
visitors from around Australia for Artlands.
* Following on from the advent of our colourful rhinos
around the city, DCC has shown strong initiative in
developing its 'Ignite' scheme, inviting citizens to suggest
beautification-type ideas for the CBD of Dubbo. Is it
possible to emulate the examples shown in Adelaide,
Ballarat, Brisbane, Fremantle, Hobart, Leura, Melbourne,
Sydney and other centres? Pedestrian-friendly venues are
indeed appreciated. The new Brisbane-Dubbo flight
connection seems like an interesting idea.
* It is pleasing to see streetscapes being enhanced. The
mighty Macquarie River and environs are looking well-
cared-for, as are the Biodiversity and Shoyoen Gardens.
Those who walk, jog or cycle from Town to Dundullimal or
Taronga Western Plains Zoo probably find this a much more
pleasurable experience than 5-10 years ago.
*Our dearly loved DRTCC, WPCC and other popular
venues continue to schedule interesting programs for our
collective enjoyment; many weekends offer amazing
choices. The theatre continues to run at a high level of
achievement, with ticket sales 5% above the state average.
New sponsors are coming on board, so the future of this
great facility does appear to be assured.
* One idea being tossed about is that of creating a restaurant
at DRTCC. A feasibility study may show that this is not the
best scheme, for logistical and practical reasons. Our many
cafes and restaurants already cater well for regular patrons,
special celebrations and their staff do take attentive care of
'pre-theatre' customers.
* A progressive idea with many commercial and social
benefits is the Evocity scheme, where hundreds of families
have been attracted to Dubbo from major centres to the
east. We welcome these adventurous folk, and hope that
they are being happily absorbed into the wonderful cultural
vibe which we enjoy in Dubbo and the central west.
At Dubbo Artz we look forward to hearing of any of your
ideas for the further development of Dubbo's creative-artistic
scene. Getting involved in an area of interest is always
rewarding!

Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre
www.drtcc.com.au
Work Experience Student in the Spotlight Lights, cues and action! The glittering glamour of theatre has always
fascinated me, and now here I am, in my fourth fabulous day of work
experience with the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre.
As soon as I was standing outside the hugely impressive building, I
knew I wouldn’t want to leave, and then I met the crew and my
attachment to this culturally enriching centre of arts quadrupled.
My first day I spent with the technical team who were busy bumping
in the Australian Dance Theatre’s Be Your Self - a thought provoking
performance which (with the help of professional bits of string and
magic...) suspended disbelief and spoke a language that everyone
can understand, conveying their main message of the human body as
an ultimately complex machine of nature- a unique generator of its
own being and importance. Deep, I know... I was - and still am - in
awe of how beautiful and intricately complicated of a job the crew
did and have had to do to make a show gain the trust and belief of
the audience (the most important people in the theatre). David
Brown (Technical and Production Co-ordinator) took the time to tour
me around backstage, onstage, around stage, upside-downstage,
answering all of my questions and telling me the fascinating works
of the unseen theatre. Did you know that it is unlucky to whistle
onstage? This is because when the flymen were working up above,
they would use a system of low whistles to communicate instructions
of operating the counterweight flying system. Luke Austin (Venue
Technician) explained, to my complete fascination, the workings of
audio systems, patching and sound desks and openly answered my
numerous questions. The absolute beauty of the complexities of
unseen theatre cannot be conveyed on paper- you’ll have to
experience it yourself. I am very thankful to the team who all told
me of their many experiences with theatre and were open and
friendly. Even through the rush of a busy bump in, they found time
to help me out. I would like to also especially thank Bill Hopper
(Casual Technician) and David McCrae (Venue Technician) whose
stories and work I found enthralling. Quite literally, everyone I met
had a story to tell, and I am glad that for a week, I get to be a part of
this family. On my second day, I was with the technical team again
and found it just as fun as the first day. I stayed and watched the
show, sitting at the sound desk with the dance troupe who again were
open to enquiries and even let me listen in on the cues during the
performance! The Stage Manager Lucy allowed me to stand with her
during rehearsal and light check, and had a holistic view of how
shows come together –that is with a lot of work from everyone - for
this I am very appreciative. On the third day, I was Linda Christof’s
(Manager) shadow. She took me along to see a meeting with the
Musical Director of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra who had
chosen Dubbo Regional Theatre as their only regional concert later
in the year. This was interesting to see, as all of the little bits started
to connect. A show doesn’t just go onto a stage, there is a big
process. And I mean BIG. Well, to me it was anyway, it’s just life to
the folks here. Linda also took me to her radio interview with
Richard Perno, which inspired my public speaking dreams further. In
short, this radio man is good - you’re very lucky Dubbo. I am
motivated by how much work the administration team do, so happy
to see how close they are and how well they work together and again
am thankful to how open they are to me, and how much work they
have put in for my experience. And now as I sit swivelling in a
spiny chair in the Box Office next to the lovely Kathy, I appreciate
the many passionate people who have stood the excruciatingly
difficult test to get into this harsh but rewarding industry. Well done
to all of these wonderful, intellectual hard workers -and Dubbo,
(again) you are very lucky to have such a fantastic theatre and
convention centre.
Truthfully, honestly and sincerely, Rosie Yapp, a work experience
kid.
PS I did not pay Rosie to make those lovely comments about our
team! Rosie stood out to our staff as an intelligent, inquisitive and
hardworking young lady. A credit to her parents and her teachers
and a delight to have around! Linda (Manager)

We have some excellent
events lined up for the 2015
Festival, but would like to
encourage all groups
associated with the arts in
the Dubbo Region to be
involved.
If your group would like to
be involved in the 2015
Festival, we would be most
interested to hear from you.
It does not have to be a
grand event - maybe doing a
30 minute music session at a
café, poetry reading along
the river, an introduction to
music session, a one act play,
wood turning display, opening
up the Orchid Centre during
the Night Markets etc.
The DREAM Festival will be
able to promote your
event and draw attention to your group.
If you would like to be part
of the 2015 DREAM

Make A Wish Dubbo raises funds and co-ordinates the granting of wishes to children in our area. We might be Dubbo based but we cover a large part of regional New South Wales. In recent times we’ve seen wishes come true for children in Parkes, Forbes, Wellington and Dubbo. Make A Wish Dubbo works to raise funds to grant wishes for children in need by holding a few major fund raisers each year. This year we will be hosting a ‘Spring Long Lunch’ to be held at the Dubbo Racecourse on Saturday 17 October 2015. Tickets will cost $50 per person and numbers are strictly limited. The day will commence with sparkling champagne and canapés, followed by a beautiful luncheon and local entertainment. One highlight of the day will be the drawing of our raffle for two return flights to Brisbane very kindly donated by Jetgo Australia. To reserve a ticket for our ‘Long Lunch’ please contact Sharyn Hunter on 0427 843 246 or email [email protected]. It is sad to see young, vulnerable children cut down by an illness that threatens their very future. To make a wish come true and to see the joy those wishes bring to those ill children is a heart-warming experience and that makes it all worthwhile.

AUGUST 24 With Toby Faber
For two hundred years, workshops in the small Northern Italian town of Cremona produced violins and other string instruments which remain the most desirable in the world. This lecture traces the story of that Golden Age, beginning with Andrea Amati in the 1560’s and following through the generations to the death of Antonio Stradivari in 1737. Looking at the shape of the violin, the principles behind it and the methods and innovations of its construction.

We will flow with the current of the river from its beginnings as a muddy puddle to its magnificent merging with the sea. Paintings by artists past and present will open our eyes to the beauty of the river. As the river snakes its way towards the sea, the movement of the water and the shape of the landscape change. Individual artists are attracted to particular rivers because that place reflects a fundamental dream that they have about life, for Constable it was the River Stour, for Whistler it was the Thames and Boyd loved the Shoalhaven River.

Since 1985, Make A Wish Australia has been making wishes come true for children battling life-threatening medical conditions. The wishes are seen as a powerful psychological intervention that provides the ill children with hope for the future, strength to face the challenges of their illness and joy from the wish experience. We have granted over 8,000 wishes throughout Australia. About 2,000 children are diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses each year and we are determined to grant the wish of every eligible child.

Comments from the audience were most encouraging. Overall this was seen as a polished entertaining performance, thanks to the hard work of all members, and particularly our leader, Dennis Wilson. Dennis plays a mean bass uke, which underpins each song and adds enormously to the quality of the sound. We had supportive responses on Facebook from far and wide. These include Brisbane, Colac (Vic), Dublin, Bundanoon, Kiama, Lithgow, Katoomba, Newcastle, Sydney and more! In response to this performance we had many enquiries from prospective players. Numbers are building for the commencement of a new beginners group on Saturday mornings. As soon as there is a group, the second intake will begin. If you are thinking of joining, make contact and we can add you to our list. The term 1 2015 beginners have now all progressed into the main group and performed with us on Saturday 25 at the Cultural Centre Art Markets. The Lust for Live performances are also on our schedule, as is the Multicultural Festival, so watch out for the happy hatty ukers at these events!

Artists have long featured animals in their work to communicate everything from domestic affection to violent life-and-death struggles. Representations of animals offer opportunities to explore daily life and symbolic – often fantastic – associations, and they also introduce important social and ethical issues. Both entertaining and thought-provoking, this considers humankind’s relationship with the greater animal kingdom. A body of work has been produced by Hunter-based artist Peter Gardiner specifically for this exhibition project during a residency at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The exhibition also includes works from the WPCC collection and works from the Lake Macquarie Art Gallery's collection.
Emergence profiles up and coming Wiradjuri artists. It pays witness to the innovation, diversity and cultural significance of a distinct Wiradjuri visual language. Every eight weeks, Emergence will feature a new emerging artist, examining those who are using art to explore the land, its people and its nature and in the process those who transcend stereotypes.
Scanlines comes from the archive of dLux MediaArts, one of Australia’s foremost media and screen arts organisations. This selection of works spans a period of thirty years, from the activities of the Super 8 Collective right through to the video and new media practitioners of today. Scanlines demonstrates that new media has both informed and responded to Australian culture. As well as highlighting the recent tradition of media art, Scanlines is designed to make accessible the philosophy and techniques of new media practice.

THE 11th LATIN AMERICAN
FILM FESTIVAL 12 feature films from 12 Latin American countries.
Saturday 29 August - 9.30am to 9.50pm Sunday 30 August - 9.30am to 9.30pm Dubbo Regional Theatre & Convention Centre
Free Community Event No booking required except for the Official Opening and Reception The Dubbo Film Society’s major event for the year will hit the screen at the Dubbo Regional Theatre on 29 and 30 August when it hosts the 11th Latin American Film Festival. The President of Dubbo Film Society said “We are extremely excited to be able to present this film festival which up until now has only been shown in the capital cities and Wollongong. It pays to have contacts in the City’s arts world as local film writer Kellie Jennar has directed her contact from the Uruguayan Embassy who was looking to hold the festival in a regional centre this year, to consider Dubbo and as luck would have it, we now have the opportunity to bring this unique event to the City”. “This festival is a big commitment for the Film Society as it will be a free community event and therefore could attract a lot of interest from local film goers” Steve Clayton continued. “ We were keen to be a part of this festival and while we are underwriting most of the cost in partnership with sponsors, we are hopeful that local film lovers will see the intrigue of foreign country films and we would love to welcome new members to our group.” he said. The Latin American Film Festival screens over two days and packs twelve films into the program, all subtitled, and each from a different country and preceded by a short film about the country of origin. The Festival will be attended by His Excellency Ambassador Pedro Villagra from Argentina and Dean of the Diplomatic Corp who will both introduce the Argentine film at 5.05pm on Saturday and officially open the Festival at 7.30pm followed by the Uruguayan comedy ‘Mr Kaplan’.

This song theme is a salute to the Dubbo Jazz Club, which celebrates 25th year of Festival presentations in 2015. Some people may say that they do not like jazz, but songs and tunes with a swing and an interesting rhythm do have wide appeal. It is a joy to watch young children respond to jazz music! If anyone is interested in adding more singing and fun to their weekly routine, Palmer Street Singers would like to hear from them. Singing a’cappella is a worldwide trend, with the comfort of initially learning songs SATB with the aid of a piano. A touch of music-reading skill is useful, but not totally essential. Repertoire covers many styles and genres. Snatches of foreign languages are attempted at times, where appropriate in a certain song. A passion for singing is the strongest motivator within this choir! * So, to discuss joining the very active Palmer Street Singers, simply phone Di Clifford on 6882 0498. Practice is held on Wednesday evenings, 5.45pm-7pm. Gigs are usually daytime events, but occasionally performances are requested for other times. Don't be shy. Come along and sing!! It feels good, and spreads joy.

This group of talented and busy a'cappella singers has been performing Carols for 'Christmas in July' at various centres around town and in Narromine, recently. Meanwhile, practices continue, with a fresh 'Jazz and Gospel’ repertoire being rehearsed for August.
