"WALK AND TALK"

"Walk and Talk" is to reflect the goals of both physical and mental health of our group and to emphasise

the social aspect of our endeavours.

As a social group of friends we will continue to walk over the summer months. We will keep a record of

who participates. We look forward to welcoming new participants once the new academic year

commences. Of course, participants MUST be members of U3A.

I look forward to meeting you at Enrolment Day.

Regards Barbara Ward ph: 0448850010

U3A Recorder Ensemble have enjoyed another year of making music and slowly progressing in our skills

under the patient leadership of Winsome Heckendorf.

Recorders have been long viewed as a dreaded instrument due mainly to parents who have had to listen to

screeching noises emanating from children’s bedrooms. Because the recorder is easy to learn and cheap to

buy, it is used by schools to introduce children to instrumentation and group playing. Few children

advance to a level where the instrument can sing and produce pleasant music. We can help you to make

the recorder sing!

The U3A Recorder Ensemble would like the child in you to progress

and complete what you may once have begun. Or you may have

always wanted to learn to play an instrument, but feel it is now too

late.

As the saying goes “It is never too late” and so we are offering a one term trial course for beginners

complete with an instrument loan at no cost. Lessons will be held on the 2nd

and 4th

Tuesday of each

month.

Come and register and learn more at U3A enrolment Friday 27th

January or Monday 6th

Feb.

Ring Anne Johnston 68856944 or 0404 838 166 for more details.

PLANTS & OTHER GARDEN STUFF

This group will continue in 2017, learning more about garden plants, sharing triumphs and frustrations and

generally enjoying each other’s company. Two excursions planned for 2016 will be resurrected – they

were comprehensively rained out on the original dates. We’re looking forward to some slide shows of

photos from members – their travels, visits to reserves and gardens.

Kay Payne, Kay Davidson – course leaders. ENDANGERED SPECIES 2nd Wednesday 10.30 at the Zoo

The first of our two final talks for 2016 year was presented by Bradd Johnston, a passionate supporter of the Askari Project, which raises much needed funds for the monitoring and conservation of the very precious elephants remaining in South Africa. With 100 elephants killed every day in S.A., this task is vital to ensure the survival of this iconic species in the wild. The ivory trade is a global issue. Having seen Bradd’s amazing photos of the “tuskers”- older bull elephants with tusks which almost touch the ground. This was a very challenging and eye-opening talk! Thanks Bradd!

Our final talk for 2016 was from Glyn Avery - a warm, very personal journey from his early childhood to the achievement of his ultimate goal – Zoo-keeper at TWPZ. What experiences he had! Glyn’s love of animals and all aspects of the natural world led him through countless volunteering experiences in Australia and overseas. Through numerous animal courses, he learned and expanded his knowledge. Then finally his dream was achieved. Glyn’s talk was brilliantly summed up by one of our members in a word –“PASSION!” Thank you, Glyn for allowing us to share your journey. It was a lovely way to end the year. Thanks again to all our presenters for 2016 and of course a special thank you to our coordinators, Mel Friedman and Gloria Ryan! Hope to see you all in 2017! Carole Henderson

Australian History Topics for Term 1, 2017.

Morning Session: 10 to 12 Afternoon Session: 2 to 4

(Each session has the same content.)

March 2

Pat Dargin: Daisy Bates

Daisy was admired for her work with the desert Aborigines. She recorded their stories and language. She

was a contemporary of our grandmothers and also a runaway from a difficult marriage.

March 2

Peter Dargin: Captain Richard Brooks

Captain Brooks is known to us as a side character but he has much to offer in his own story as a friend and

enemy of colonists and governors. He made six voyages to New South Wales. He took William Charles

Wentworth to England and brought him back. His ship Rose was impounded in the Rum Rebellion and he

became the colony’s leading cattle owner.

April 6

Pat Dargin: Sarah White Regan Musgrove, An Indomitable Spirit

Sarah was born in 1834 at ‘Burrangong’, a squatting run taken up by her father, James White, in the early

1830s. It was on the south-west plains, beyond the limits of settlement. This is her story.

April 6

Peter Dargin: Jane New, convict, legal problem and woman of influence.

Jane New, convict assigned to her husband (who brings her from Van Dieman’s Land to Sydney) is

convicted of stealing and sentenced to death. She is confined to the Female Factory while lawyers, judges

and the governor argue whose property she is, until, with the help of some much-smitten men of law, Jane

escapes.

Please Remember The Dubbo U3A Chapter is having its AGM on 6th February at WPCC at 12.00 noon following the enrolment days on Friday 3rd February and Monday 6th February from 9.00 am to noon. These events are happening in the Community Rooms which run along Gipps Street, between Wingewarra and Talbragar Streets. The AGM is preceded by a light luncheon. Please consider standing for the Committee or someone you know (if they are agreeable) to the Executive Committee.
