CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Transition to Transformation(part 1) By Dr. Tekemia Dorsey

THE YEAR of 2010 was a tough period for most people. A year filled with seasons of uncertain-ty, trials, tribulations, ups, downs, good and bad times. The US expe-rienced one of the toughest times during the recession, financially. A host of home owners lost their homes, employers laid off work-ers and employees hit the unem-ployment lines. Most people were forced from their jobs while others were forced to face their toughest demons, SELF. The mirrored image people awaken to face daily was the very image that remains the key to success or failure. While many expe-rienced such tough times in 2010, they did not allow their situation to hinder future growth. Most people I know used the remaining of 2010, to move pass their current state of mind to lay the foundation for their season of TRANSITION.

For most, 2010 became the sea-son of transition; the season that would lay the foundation for suc-cess. Business owners negatively affected by the recession in 2010 had to devise a game plan for suc-cess. However, the success of that plan would not be evident in 2011. For parents whose children did not do well in school in the fall, would

devise a plan for success for the upcoming semesters. For authors that did not do well with sales and exposure in the fall, would devise a plan for success for the following spring and summer. Planning your work and then working your plan remains a key to success.

For me, 2010 personally and pro-fessionally was a challenge and so in September 2010, I declared to self, that that time in my life would be the “season of transition” for me. So I begin working, planning, learn-ing, creating, networking, imple-menting, falling, getting up and so forth for the new season to come. By September, every moment and every plan of action was important and critical for success but the key to success was not how many peo-ple I came in contact with, but the quality of each relationship begin-ning with the one I had with my-self. The season of transition was a long, challenging and rewarding one………

Recieve a FREE Age Appropriate Book; read it this summer and then either write an essay, draw an illustration, or create a spoken word regarding your understand-ing of the content of the book. Entries must be received no later than August 30, 2011. Every youth that complete Dr. Tekemia Dorsey’s Summer Reading Book Challenge will receive a FREE ticket to the 1st Annual Youth Black Tie Gala Benefit Fundraiser for Obesity & Literacy. All entries should be submitted to [email protected].

The purpose of this program is to place 500-700 books in the hands of youth in 100 dayz. The summer break is the time where most of our youth lose the knowledge ob-

tained over the previous academic year and this program is designed to help keep that

knowledge fresh and active. Eventually, this program will be operating throughout the United States and Internationally. Check

The 2011 Youth Empowerment Conference remains part of the 2011 Youth Empowerment RETREAT year-long initiatives for youth, parents, and the community in Baltimore and the state of Maryland. Officially proclaimed “The Year of the Youth” in Baltimore and Maryland by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Gov-ernor Martin O’Malley in partnership with The Creative GRP., LLC,.

Dr. Tekemia Dorsey says this initiative is the next logical step in addressing the chronic prob-lems that youth and their parents have been facing. “There are many examples of traditional workshops, trainings and programs that youth are encouraged to participate in that are designed to address issues facing our youth—delinquency, low academics, gang violence, peer pres-

sure, inner city problems, etc.,” said Dorsey, “but there aren’t any avenues that address issues of truly empow-ering our youth to take on leader-ship positions and then provide them with actual opportunities to apply their new-found knowledge.”

The 2011 Youth Empowerment RETREAT is a year long initiative

geared towards at-risk youth, par-ents, the community, and its leaders. The 2011 YER began on November 1, 2010 and ends on December 31, 2011. The 2011 YER initiatives are designed to empower, motivate, and inspire at-risk youth, parents, and the community by providing knowl-edge, opportunity and a chance to make a difference in their own lives.

The 2011 Youth Empowerment RETREAT Conference was a full day events full of workshops for youth ages 8-13, 14-18, parents, community leaders, and some of the participants engaged in a faith-based initiative as well. Topics for youth were designed to empower youth in all facets of their lives including school, home, and the community. Separate workshops were held for leaders of youth centered organizations or those that just work with youth on FREE grant writing, partnership marketing, PR strategies, team building exercises, developing stra-tegic partnerships, and much more. A mini workshop by Pastor Kevin Brooks was incorporated with the discusssion about the importance of a “Values-Based Education!” Honors were awarded to community leaders Congressman Elijah Cummings and City Councilman President Bernard Young. Designed to bring together lead-ers of Community organizations who serve youth and families, The 2011 YER Community Leaders Col-laborative Initiative provided a full day of networking, team-building, learning and collaborative working sessions. The outcomes of these ses-sions enhanced partnerships; stra-tegic marketing alliances and fund-raising collaborations. We laid the foundation of a new approach to addressing the needs of youth and develop sound strategies to gaining additional Support and resources for our organizations.

Approximately 125-150 youth, parents, the community and lead-ers were in attendance on April 2, 2011 at the 1st Annual 2011 Youth Empowerment RETREAT Confer-ence. It was the first event in Bal-timore’s history to bring together all facets of society in one event for FREE all day workshops designed to provide youth and parents with the knowledge they need, the oppor-tunity they’ve been seeking and a chance to do more for themselves and their community. This initiative helped to bring an inter-agency gap by bringing leaders of these

organizations together in strategic partnerships. developing strategic partnerships, and much more.

Keynote Speaker (Omar S. Muhammad is Director of the Entrepreneurial Development and Assistance Center (EDAC) located at the Earl G. Graves School of Busi-ness & Management on the campus of Morgan State University, opened the floor with a speech to our youth. He is responsible for developing, fundraising, and managing entre-preneurial initiatives. This is accom-plished through his continuous interaction with the Morgan State University community and sur-rounding organizations primarily located in Maryland, Washington D.C. and Virginia.

This creative writing course will expose you to various forms of creative writing in the fields of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, etc. Students will develop their writing abilities through using their imagination, several exercises, and pointers on craft. The founda-tion of the writer will begin with this course as students gain more creativity, awareness, and confidence in their work.

Student Achievement Youth Workshop

This workshop introduces the concepts for learners to establish the common expecta-tions about testing. Testing is schools are an unavoidable event. Students knowing how to study and other test taking strategies are a vital element of self confidence. The test-taking workshop will enable learners to apply the best research-based strategies for academic success.

parents’ Tips To Encourage Student Achievement

Parents are a crucial part of the student achievement and children learning commu-nity. As we explore topics that develop pos-itive networking with schools, assessments strategies, and domestic tips, information from this workshop can establish parental involvement in schools as an element that is more rewarding, effective and enjoyable.

The “get the lead Out” campaign

A new way at looking at lead and toxic met-al exposure. Currently, lead toxicity is deter-mined through a blood test. Hair analysis technology is used to detect & remove lead from the body without drugs. After lead exposure, lead is deposited in the brain & bone, resulting in false negative test. Left in the body, lead can cause many physiologi-cal and psychological ills. These issues have plagued our society long enough.

Mike Smoot 2011 YER Father of the Year

Mike Smoot aka BAM exemplifies the epitome of “FATHERHOOD!” Despite going through a divorce from his first wife, Mike continued to be a part of his chil-dren’s lives (all boys). Mike made it a point of not only being a part of his children’s lives but to be as ACTIVE with them as a mother would with a new born child. You never hear him complain, second guess, or ques-tion his role in life as a father or his role in the lives of his children. In fact, one may wonder “How is it he does so much for them all!”

Mike coaches every sport his boys are a part of. Mike takes off of work and travels with the sports teams’ out of Maryland to championship games, tournaments, etc. I know one may say “He should be doing this anyway” and he should but the difference is and remains “He does it unselfishly and keeps his kids FIRST”, next to GOD! In addition to being an example of what a father should be, Mike continuously take time out for others just because.......this is simply WHO HE IS! I am proud to know him, to have a bond that expands time, and to have a person to look too and say “That’s what I am talking about, a role model for FATHER’s and FATHER’s- 2- B!”

You see, in today’s society what makes a great man is not the words echoed from his mouth but the ACTIONS that dictate the behavior. Mike, is a coach for the Grays Softball Organization and the coach of the Grays Sox basketball team and as much as Mike love playing sports and strives to be #1 in any position he plays, giving 200% of himself, he has declined to be active in these sports to Coach his sons’ in their respective sports, that always seem to overlap (for example, foot-ball, basketball, baseball, swimming, wrestling, etc). Mike is teaching his boys how to become MEN and to stay focus on what is important in life. For this and a host of many other reasons, Mike Smoot is worthy to be nominated and be awarded as a 2011 Youth Empowerment RETREAT’s “Father of the Year!”

BAlTiMORE, MD Omar S. Muhammad is Director of the Entrepreneurial Development and Assistance Center (EDAC) located at the Earl G. Graves School of Business & Management on the campus of Morgan State University. He is responsible for developing, fundraising, and managing entrepreneurial initiatives. This is accomplished through his continuous interaction with the Morgan State University community and surrounding organizations primarily located in Maryland, Washington D.C. and Virginia.pRiOR TO becoming the Director of EDAC, Omar was an instructor and counselor for Women Entrepreneurs of Baltimore, Inc. As an instruc-tor, he was responsible for assisting over 150 students in developing business plans and pro-viding additional resources for starting, operat-ing, and growing small businesses. In addition, Omar served as Vice President and Director of the Community Lending Group, an affiliate of the Development Credit Fund, Inc.OMAR SERVES on several committees includ-ing Maryland Department of Housing & Com-munity Development Neighborhood Business Works Program loan committee, Engaging Youth Entrepreneurs for Change, Inc. and is a member of the Greater Baltimore Committee Leader-ship Alumni Association (Class 2006). We interact and encoun-ter people daily. We inter-act and encounter people on the daily basis whether we want too or not. Some encounters and interac-tions are pleasant and others are not so pleasant. While we cannot control who and what comes cross our paths by way of the world and Spirit, we can manipulate the relation-ships, partnerships, and courtships that happen in life. Like-minded spirits are those relationships in life that help one to grow, that assist one in achieving their spiritual calling, while mak-ing sure they remain ac-countable (Dorsey, 2009). Like-minded spirits strive for the betterment of others while caring for self along the way. The phrase “like-minded spirits” is not in the dictionary; therefore, this definition remains my own. Fitness. When you are working towards a common goal for self and you are an

individual that need or require a partner, make sure that you and your partner have the same spirit, the same goal, want-ing the same outcomes. Pairing yourself with like-minded spirits in whatever category of life, is essential for improving your overall health and well-being. Pair-ing yourself with like-minded spirits also will reduce stress, lessen anxi-

ety, and increase happiness. Like-minded spirits can be those that you speak with daily or once in a while. Test the theory and let me know your findings. True pairings of like-minded spirits are rare in a lifetime and do not occur daily. Martin Luther King, Jr. & Presi-dent-Elect Barack Obama are like-minded spirits separated in time by more than four decades but exemplify the same values, mor-als, ethics, and beliefs. Amazing!

Closing the Gap………... When we think of clos-ing the gap in life, we often think in terms of achieve-ment, education, students but we should really be thinking in terms of life in general. The word gap is synony-mous with thoughts of edu-cation, students, and

achieve-

ment but also with achieving goals, preparing for the king-dom, and learning how to sur-vive in tough economic times. We must learn to close the gaps that exist in communica-tion, building relationships, strengthening relationships, raising our children, and most importantly taking care of ourselves. Begin closing the

gaps in your life, regardless of what they are, how hard that can be, or appear to be. Close the gap and renew your strength along the way. Start with organization, plan-ning, time management, prayer, mediation, and journaling. These strategies will help to close the gaps in life regardless of the category the gap falls under.

Daily we are faced with obstacles unexpected or expected. We expect for our children to not always be on their best behavior. We ex-pect to encounter negative spirits that are not wel-comed. We expect to go to work to attack a perfect pre-planned agenda and for something unexpectedly to

arise. We expect to gain a pound or two, even five if we eat a pound or two of fried chicken wings, a side order of fries and ketchup/hot sauce, and a half-and-half. We do not expect to go to the doctor’s to be told we have a terminal illness. We do not expect to come home

one day to suspect foul play in our homes from our significant other. We do not expect to receive a phone call from a friend or relative noting that someone passed away. We do not expect the unexpected and are not really prepared for the expected. How do you handle

the misbehavior in children? How do you handle negative spirits or even draining ones? How do you deal with an immediate change of plans in your schedule un-foreseen? What strategies have you adopted or exe-cuted to ensure that you live a fulfilling life? What activi-ties have you researched for you and the family to do, to become more active and less prone to family or life’s disease? How do you chan-nel your energy when faced with stress, being over-worked and under paid? What do you do when your income does not suffice your responsibilities in life? Do you have an outlet or people to turn too? Well…………..

this annual run gearing up for the Baltimore Marathon in October. The Baltimore Mara-thon will be held in Baltimore, Maryland. I completed my first marathon in 1997; my 2nd in 1998; and my third in 2000. I have been running them ever since.

While we continue to embark upon the daily excitements, ups, downs, and surprises new adventures con-tinue to remain evident. New adven-tures in the forms of activities, educa-tion, events, people, and places. This year, I have decided to embark upon an old new adventure. It is old in the sense, I have done this 10-12 other times but it has been almost six months since the last time I even considered it. On May7, 2011 six months into my 38th birthday, I will be participating in

negative thoughts, requires ambition and drive to get through what may appear at times to be eternal fantasy versus hard-core reality. On the contrary, hard work for some remains tough but manageable. There are situations in life that requires one to work hard without too many choices of executing the opposite. These examples include parenting,

obtaining a higher degree, improving one’s life, losing weight, living healthy, and developing a connection with GOD. Hard work is a part of life. Anything worth having is worth fighting for, especially your health, relationship, sanity, and your relationship with GOD. Word hard in 2011!

Hard work remains a virtue and a characteristic of life and difficult for some to fathomed. Hard work is diffi-cult for some to encompass because it requires one to really put forth effort, re-quires patience, is not a quick fix, and requires perse-verance and dedication. Hard work requires a strong psyche to overcome the

CHilDREN TODAY are living in a hectic and changing world, one that is quite different from what it was a few decades ago. They are growing up much faster and must live up to the expectations and demands of teachers, parents, peers, and society. Chil-dren are often forced to adjust to numerous adverse situations such as communica-tion barriers, peer pressure, and school-related problems, without much assistance. These situations can be extremely confusing and frustrating. Many circumstances, including wanting to be accepted by friends, not doing well academically, not being allowed to think and make decisions, parents not understanding them and not having enough autonomy increase the children’s anxieties (Bauwens and Hourcade, 1992; Elkind, 1986; Omizo, Omizo, and Suzuki, 1988; Lupton-Smith, Carruthers, Goette, and Modest, 1996; and Kiselica, Baker, Thomas, and Reedy, 1994). These conditions create much stress among school age children, including culturally diverse students.

Culturally diverse children represent a significant part of the school population that is at risk to mental illness due to stress-related factors. Generally, these families tend to have limited support services and furthermore, they tend not to use the support services available (Kopala, Esquivel, and Baptiste, 1994). School counselors need to be prepared to cope with this societal change. Schools will not be able to hire enough culturally diverse counselors for the school populations; therefore, school counselors will increasingly have to counsel students from cultures different from their own. Counselors need to learn as much as possible about the cultures of their diverse clients; however, with the amount of cultural diversity expected, learning about many different cultures will be a difficult task. On the other hand, helping culturally diverse students to overcome barriers to education and maximize their probability of success in beneficial (Cochran, 1996).

TO ASSiST children with stress and stressful situations in their lives, school counselors, in a collaborative team effort with teachers, parents, administrators, and students must first accurately determine what the stress is; ways to prohibit this stress, and then iden-tify more effective strategies to cope with this stress. Research suggests that learning how to cope successfully is a key determiner of the long-term psychological, emotional, and physiological effects of stress (Henderson, Kelbey, and Engrebreston, 1992).
