Happy New Year! What an exciting time to be a member of the DSOL! We eagerly anticipate the introduction of Music Director Fabio Luisi and His Artistic Vision for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra – beginning with his inaugural concerts on April 18 and 19, 2019 as Maestro Luisi launches the new artistic chapter of the DSO. Recently, Kim Noltemy, CEO of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra announced programming and new initiatives that will have a long-term impact on the landscape of classical music in Dallas and the entire industry with emphasis on Extensive Community Engagement Beginning in Dallas’s Southern Sector – These will be community-based education programs and affiliated events, designed to increase the DSO’s presence in the Southern Sector and affect positive change in the area. There will be numerous opportunities including the development of a pathway for interested children to receive music lessons and instruments.

Music lessons were the norm in my family; children’s choir, piano, violin, guitar…even bell choir. I was

The President’s Message

privileged by parents who started me off very early. Many children in our community do not have this opportunity ----nor a parent to encourage them. Thanks to each of YOU, more students will receive this gift! Through teaching music to children in the schools and in their homes, I attest this learning taps into multiple skill sets, often simultaneously. Musical practice, parallel with children’s play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength and so much more!According to the Children’s Music Workshop, the effect of music education on language development can be seen in the brain. “Recent studies have clearly indicated that musical training physically develops the part of the left side of the brain known to be involved with processing language, and can actually wire the brain’s circuits in specific ways. Linking familiar songs to new information can also help imprint information on young minds,” the group claims.

This relationship between music and language development is also socially advantageous to young children. “The development of language over time tends to enhance parts of the brain that help process music,” says Dr. Kyle Pruett, clinical professor of child psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine and a practicing musician. “Language competence is at the root of social competence. Musical experience strengthens the capacity to be verbally competent.”

Thank you for your gifts of time, talent and treasure in support of each student we serve! 2019 began with the Juanita Miller Concerto Competition on January 13th and showcasing our state’s most talented string, wind and keyboard musicians with Ashley Tauhert as grand prize winner presented by Patsy Miller Donosky . Thank you to our dear Heather Moore, Chair; Anne Blomeyer, Chair-Elect and Volunteers Pat McLaughlin, Fallon Bock and Sarah Frazee for facilitating a successful completion!

Unique Strengths of AMSOV The Association of Major Symphony Orchestra Volunteers is comprised of the highest ranking volunteer leaders in the largest orchestras in North America. You are to be congratulated on being selected to represent your orchestra in this organization. Diversity, Development and Donation$ in Big D! This is the theme of our next AMSOV Conference in Dallas, Texas on April 25-28, 2019. Several notable speakers will be addressing these challenging topics. You will want to see their bios on the conference website www.amsovconf.org. Debutante and Honor Guard Nominations for 2020We invite our DSOL members to nominate Debutante and Honor Guard candidates for the 2020 Presentation Ball. The season will be filled with artistic fanfare and a wide range of engagement activi-ties in celebration of the Thirty-fourth Presentation Ball to be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at

the Morton H. Meyerson Sympho-ny Center.

Beginning in May 2019 and con-tinuing through the 2020 Presen-tation Ball the following February, the selected Dallas Symphony Debutantes, the members of the Honor Guard, and the Symphony Assembly (former Symphony Deb-utantes) will enjoy elegant parties and events as these extraordinary and lovely young women are

presented to the Dallas commu-nity, while building connections to the Dallas Symphony. Events will be scheduled when colleges are not in session in order that out-of-town Ball participants will be able to attend.

By completing and returning a nomination form by February 21, 2019, you will ensure priority consideration of your candidate(s). Each prospective Debutante must be a sophomore, junior, or senior in college the year in which she will be presented. The Presenta-tion requires a donation to the Dallas Symphony of $13,500 (approximately $10,000 being tax-deductible). This donation provides reserved seating for ten adult guests at the Ball for Debu-tante families, as well as invita-tions to Debutante and Honor Guard events throughout the year. Honor Guard members have to be 21 years of age by the date of the Ball. For 34 years this historical presentation ball has been hon-oring exceptional young ladies and their families while providing critical funding to one of Dallas’s most significant assets—the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Through-out the years, proceeds from this event have enabled the Symphony to maintain its high standard of excellence for its Education and Community Outreach Programs.

We look forward to receiving your nominations for The 2020 Presen-tation Ball, which we promise will be truly memorable and a spec-tacular evening.
