The Engineering Leader of the Year is selected by a committee seeking an individual that demonstrates leadership and plays a key role in creating the technological solutions to solve the societal problems of the 21st century. The College of Engineering is honored to recognize Mr. James F. Albaugh as the 10th Annual Engineering Leader of the Year.

Jim Albaugh is President and Chief ExecutiveOfficer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, adesigner and manufacturer of commercialpassenger airplanes, with more than 12,000jets in operation around the world. Foundedin 1916 Boeing Commercial Airplanesemploys 80,000 people and had $36.2 billionin revenue in 2011. Albaugh was named tothis position in September 2009. He is alsoExecutive Vice President of The BoeingCompany.

From 2002 to 2009, Albaugh served aspresident and CEO of Boeing IntegratedDefense Systems, a $34 billion business,providing defense, space and intelligenceproducts for the United States and customersaround the world.

From 1998 to 2002, Albaugh was presidentand CEO of Boeing Space andCommunications, which merged with thecompany's Military Aircraft and MissilesSystems unit in July 2002 to create IntegratedDefense Systems.

Prior to that, he served as president ofRocketdyne Propulsion & Power, part of theRockwell aerospace and defense businessesacquired by Boeing in 1996. A Washingtonstate native, he joined the company in 1975as an engineer.

Albaugh is an elected member of both theNational Academy of Engineering and theInternational Academy of Astronautics. He isa Fellow and an Honorary Fellow of theAmerican Institute of Aeronautics and

Astronautics and an elected Fellow of the RoyalAeronautical Society.

Albaugh's other affiliations include the AirForce Association and the AmericanAstronautical Society. He serves on theAerospace Industries Association Board ofGovernors Executive Committee and in 2011he was chairman of AIA.

Albaugh is a member of the WashingtonRoundtable, a nonprofit public-policyorganization composed of chief executivesrepresenting major private-sector employers inWashington state.

Albaugh has received numerous awards andhonors. The Southern California AeronauticAssociation presented him with the HowardHughes Memorial Award for extensivecontributions to the aerospace industry. Hereceived the Forrestal Award from the NationalDefense Industrial Association for leadership inpreserving a strong U.S. defense industrial baseand the Blue Planet Star Medal from theRussian Space Agency for fostering cooperationbetween the U.S. and Russia in SpaceExploration.

Other recognition includes the Semper FidelisAward, presented by the Marine CorpsScholarship Foundation; the Bob HopeDistinguished Citizen Award, presented by theNational Defense Industrial Association; andthe International von Karman Wings Award,presented by the Aerospace Historical Society.A Gold-and-Silver-Knight of the NationalManagement Association, Albaugh was thatorganization's Executive of the Year in 1999.

Albaugh serves on the TRW Automotive Boardof Directors, the Board of Trustees ofWillamette University and the Board of Visitorsof The Fu Foundation School of Engineeringand Applied Science at Columbia University.He also is on the Wings Club Board ofGovernors and the board of the NationalCompetitiveness Center, an independentorganization that helps Saudi Arabia competemore effectively in the global economy.

Albaugh holds bachelor's degrees inmathematics and physics from WillametteUniversity and a master's degree in civilengineering from Columbia University.
