Local access to education and health remain as big challenges in the mountain regions of Nepal. HEF aims to

address this gap by helping on the funding of teachers and nurses salaries as well as by improving local

infrastructure. Over the last ten years, a library, a computer lab, a health clinic, and new classrooms for

additional grades have been built. Still there are many problems ahead, but with the effort of our communities

and the support of new income generating projects as this trail, they might be overcome. More information about the organization can be found in the website himanchal.org.

About Our Trekking Project Annapurna Dhaulagiri Community Trek project (the name of the map is Community-managed Ecotrail _

Mohare-Khopra-Khayar Lek ) was established in 2010 with the financial support of UNDP/MEDEP and village

contribution. This is an unique trekking route in Nepal due to its objective to develop the community of Parbat

and Myagdi Districts in order to support the education system of community based schools in the villages.

The route offers you a mixture between fabulous landscape and great culture experience. This is an off -

beaten trek which gives you the opportunity to see the real Nepali life while walking in quiet and peace without

the crowd that you can usually find in other trails.During your trek, you will have a combination of community home-stay and community lodges. In each village

you can visit the local projects and buy some of the local products. The benefits from your visit will reach the

whole community and will not go to one individual person.

There are many options of itineraries for this trek. Any trekker can adjust this route according to their desire and

    interest.

HEFs Cottage Industries PaperMakingDecember 5th, 2008 by Jane Sabin Davis No Comments

Thanks to Mahabir Puns efforts, many village women inNangi now have a sustainable income to help support theirfamilies. It is difficult for westerners to imagine the impactthat bringing an additional $2.00/day can make on a familys well-being: it is the difference between having enough moneyfor a few extra things at the local shop for the kids, anoccasional chicken from traveling salespersons, or a festive

new sari for a special occasion.

Over the last four years, the women have had several trainingsfocusing on how to construct diaries which are made entirelyfrom handmade paper and how to trim the books so that theyare appealing to western markets. Initially the diaries weretransported by tourists but finally this year we were successfulin shipping 252 diaries from Nepal to the US.They are made 100% from the Lokta tree, unlike most otherhand made paper that is a mix of ingredients. The bark fromthe Lokta tree is renewable so cutting off the branches andstripping the bark only results in more branches sproutingfrom the shrub. The women have also began developing local

dyes made from the walnut tree. The process is detailed andtime-consuming: harvesting the plant, pealing the soft outer bark from the wooden stack, finely separating the strands ofeach piece of bark, soaking, cooking, and pulverizing thematerial until it is the consistency of mushy, wet paper, andthen getting the diluted paper mixture onto frames for dryingin the sun. Finally, the finished paper! Making the diariesthemselves consists of cutting, pasting, and sewing.

The Himanchal Educational Foundation is sellingthese 70 page diaries for $15.00. Please email JaneSabin-Davis at jane-at-himanchal-dot-org if you areinterested in supporting the women of Nangi village.
