Sophomore outside hitter Angela Bys turned in another strong campaign for Drake, leading the team in kills (397), kills per set (3.31) and total attempts (1,117), while ranking second in service aces (26) and aces per set (0.22).

She fi nished the year ranked sixth, eighth and 15th, respectively in the league in kills, points (3.70) and aces per frame. In league-only tilts, she was seventh and 10th in kills (3.18) and points (3.46). Her 397 kills and 1,117 attack attempts represented the seventh-best single-season marks in school history.

On the strength of her team-high 1,003 assists this season, junior setter Chelsea Lauersdorf moved into third place in career assists for the Bulldogs with 2,150. Her 1,003 assists this past season represented the 10th-best single-season output in school history and sparked her to rank ninth in the league in assists.

As a team, the Bulldogs posted 18 individual double-doubles this season. Lauersdorf led

A season of change is never easy on any program and for the Drake volleyball squad under the direction of fi rst year head coach Phil McDaniel, the 2008 campaign was one fi lled with many chapters defi ned by a full gamut of emotions.

In raw numbers alone in terms of won-loss ratio this past season was one which critics will either view as glass half-full or glass half-empty.

On the positive side, the Bulldogs fi nished with a 12-20 mark to post their highest victory output since 1998, while their fi ve Missouri Valley Conference triumphs were Drake’s most since 2000. The 12 wins represented a new ceiling for victories among the Bulldogs, as the previous high-water mark for the current Drake roster was eight triumphs in 2006.

The negatives were tangible as despite fi nishing with their 12th consecutive non-winning season, the Bulldogs clearly improved as the season progressed, but the squad still left many victories on the table as evidenced by Drake’s 4-4 record in fi ve-set matches.

Leading the defensive resurgence on the back row was the play of sophomore libero Alana Wittenburg, who shattered the single-season Drake record for digs with 603 and sits fourth in school history with 1,026 career digs. She fi nished fourth in the MVC in digs (4.98), while ranking 28th nationally helping the Bulldogs fi nish 70th (among 250 schools) in the country. In league-only affairs she ranked fi fth in digs (4.70).

Sparking the defensive corps on the front line was the play of freshman middle blocker Michelle Reidy, sophomore outside hitter Alisa DeBerg Roth, redshirt freshman outside hitter Mikayla Sims and junior outside hitter Emily Madden as the quartet

the way with eight, including a triple-double at UMKC, while Bys contributed seven and Madden added three.

The Bulldogs got strong play from their freshmen core of Reidy, setter Caitlin Johnson and defensive specialist Erika Price. Registering 1.73 kills and team-highs in blocks and hitting percentage (.228) was Reidy, while Johnson contributed 3.19 assists and Price 0.85 digs and 0.68 kills per set.

Elevating the Bulldogs’ arsenal in their second seasons were Bys, DeBerg Roth and Sims. DeBerg Roth evolved as a force for the Blue and White, averaging 1.79 kills and the 24th-best block mark (0.64) in the league. Despite being hampered by injuries, Sims posted 2.33 kills a set en route to netting the second-highest hitting percentage (.215) on the team. She ranked 24th in the conference in kills and 25th in points (2.65).

Making the most of their on-court time as juniors were Madden, middle blocker Ashley Jarek and defensive specialists Lindsay Schryver and Kristen Word.

Madden turned in a stellar campaign registering 2.53 digs, 2.00 kills and 0.49 blocks. She fi nished 24th in the MVC in digs. Schryver collected 21 service aces to rank third on the team and 25th in the conference, while Word recorded 0.60 digs per set.

Jarek made the most of her playing time, averaging 0.67 kills and 0.60 blocks. Her block mark stood as the fourth-best mark on the roster.

Sophomore setter Susan Clausen netted 0.46 digs and 0.37 assists in limited action in her fi rst campaign at Drake.
