McDaniel rekindled the Bulldog program in his initial campaign as Drake posted a 12- 20 mark. The 12 victories were deceiving on first glance as the win total was the high- est for a Bulldog team since the 1998 unit captured 13 triumphs. It also marked the initial time any current member of the Drake team had won double-digit matches during their respective careers. On the court, sophomore Alana Witten- burg shattered the single-season record for digs with 603 to supplant Brandy Ossian (545-1995) atop the Drake list. Sophomore Angela Bys turned in 397 kills, the seventh-best single- season mark in school history, while junior Chelsea Lauersdorf netted the 10th-best mark in assists with 1,003. Off the court, the team was named as one of the AVCA Team Academic Award winners, recording a 3.5 grade point average for the 2008-09 academic year and Bys was tabbed to the All-MVC Scholar-Athlete first team. An assistant coach at South Dakota State from 2005-2007, McDaniel helped the Jackrabbits claim the 2007 Summit League title as well as a berth in the NCAA Tournament. During his tenure in Brookings, S.D., he spearheaded recruiting efforts for the SDSU program, as well as monitoring academic progress for the Jackrabbits, who were honored by the American Volleyball Coaches As- sociation (AVCA) with its Game Plan/AVCA Team Academic Award in 2005 and 2006. During his last three years at South Dakota State, McDaniel played a part in helping lead the Jackrabbits to a 63-42 record, including the first-ever Division I NCAA Tournament appearance in school history in 2007. He helped further the development of Amy Anderson, the Summit League Tournament’s Most Valuable Player. McDaniel, 35, came to South Dakota State after spending three seasons (2002-04) as an assistant coach at New Mexico State. Phil McDaniel is in his second season guid-ing the Drake volleyball program after being named the 10th women’s volleyball coach at Drake University.

McDaniel rekindled the Bulldog program in his initial campaign as Drake posted a 12-20 mark. The 12 victories were deceiving on fi rst glance as the win total was the high-est for a Bulldog team since the 1998 unit captured 13 triumphs. It also marked the initial time any current member of the Drake team had won double-digit matches during their respective careers.

On the court, sophomore Alana Witten-burg shattered the single-season record

for digs with 603 to supplant Brandy Ossian (545-1995) atop the Drake list. Sophomore Angela Bys turned in 397 kills, the seventh-best single-season mark in school history, while junior Chelsea Lauersdorf netted the 10th-best mark in assists with 1,003.

Off the court, the team was named as one of the AVCA Team Academic Award winners, recording a 3.5 grade point average for the 2008-09 academic year and Bys was tabbed to the All-MVC Scholar-Athlete fi rst team.

An assistant coach at South Dakota State from 2005-2007, McDaniel helped the Jackrabbits claim the 2007 Summit League title as well as a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

VOLLEYBALL | 09No stranger to the Missouri Valley Confer-ence having played her collegiate volleyball at Northern Iowa, Erin Hirsch is in her third season on the Bulldog staff after spending the 2006 campaign as an assistant coach at Upper Iowa.

Her primary responsibilities for the Bull-dogs are assisting with all facets of day-to-day operations of the volleyball program, as well as coordinating team travel and overseeing the development and training of the Drake setters.

“Drive, focus, and a competitive personal-ity sum up the qualities I was looking for in an assistant coach and Erin possesses all three and more,” Drake head coach Phil McDaniel said. “Her on-court instruction is

solid and she has a good eye for spotting talented young athletes when out recruiting. She has developed a strong relationship with the players and with the athletic administration.”

ERIN HIRSCH * ASSISTANT COACH * THIRD SEASONHirsch has been an active coach in USA Club Volleyball since 2002, including leading her squad to four national tournament appearances.

While at Northern Iowa, she was a member of three Missouri Valley Conference championship volleyball squads (2000-02). The Panthers made the NCAA Tournament during each of her fi rst three campaigns.Hirsch graduated from UNI in 2005 with a degree in health promotion. She resides in Windsor Heights.

Chris Brees is in his second season as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs, bringing over 10 years experience to his post.

His area of responsibilities includes as-sisting with the Bulldogs’ day-to-day prac-tice preparations with a primary focus on defense as well as handling Drake’s video editing.

“Chris possesses great local knowledge of players and club teams, and a coaching background that allows him to help in the development of our young squad,” Drake head coach Phil McDaniel said.

An active coach of the club volleyball circuit, he has helped develop the Iowa Power Volleyball Alliance, Westside Se-lect, Beatrice Juniors and Dubuque Sting/Slam club squads.

A three-time team captain as a player at Clarke College from 1993-96, he started his coaching career as a women’s assistant coach at Clarke in 1997.

CHRIS BREES * ASSISTANT COACH * SECOND SEASONFrom 1998-2002, as head coach he led Southeast (Iowa) Community College to four consecutive winning campaigns and was tabbed as the NCCAC Coach of the Year following the 2000 season.

In two years as head coach at William Penn University (2002), he pro-pelled the Statesmen to their fi rst winning season (19-12) in 10 seasons in 2002 en route to garnering MCC Coach of the Year honors. He has also served as an assistant coach at Grand View College (2003-05).

Brees graduated from Clarke College in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in arts/communications.

SARAH SCHUSTERVOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACHSECOND SEASONSarah Schuster is in her second season as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs. Schuster, a four-year standout setter with the Drake volleyball team (2004-07), graduated in December 2008 with a bachelors degree in elementary education. She currently teaches third grade at Irving Elementary in Indianola (Iowa). Irving is a year-round elementary school which is part of the Indianola District.
