women’s basketball indoor track & fieldIn the first season where athletes were eligible for postseason competition including the SUNYAC championship meet, the men and women of the indoor track & field teams certainly showed well. Both squads had qualifiers for the conference and ECAC championship meets while the womenʼs squad had a provisional NCAA qualifying relay. Both the men and women trained hard and participated in scoring and non-scoring meets throughout December, Janu-ary and February prior to the championship meets. Each week brought more and more qualifiers and new school records as the athletes primed themselves for putting their best effort forward at the bigger meets. At the SUNYAC Championship meet during the third week of February the men placed ninth with 14 points. The foursome of juniors Chris Smith (Patterson, NY) and Kwame White (Albany, NY) and sophomores Lou Mazzarisi (Staten Island, NY) and Vin Verteramo (Staten Island, NY) made their presence felt by winning the 4x400-meter relay. The foursome set a new school record in the event in running a 3:28.46 just ahead of Cortland (3:28.53) and Geneseo (3:29.29) to claim thee programʼs first SUNYAC title in indoor track & field. White and Verteramo also won medals in their individual events for Oneonta. White placed sixth in the 200-meter dash in a school-

Year two of the reloading process for the Red Drag-ons saw them add a talented group of newcomers to the nucleus of players that had been through the paces in 2001-02. The team would be looking to the trio of seniors Alena Seabrook (Middletown, NY) and Marie Davey (Amsterdam, NY) and junior Kristen Tursi (Staten Island, NY) to lead them into battle. As the year unfolded these three players did lead and the younger players began to contribute to the team by the end of the first part of the season. The season opened with a pair of victories at

the Holiday Inn Tip-Off Classic host-ed by Oneonta. The first game of the season was a 71-55 victory against Hartwick and that was followed with a 60-55 win against Pitt-Bradford to claim the championship. Seabrook was selected as the tournament MVP after scoring 29 points and grabbing 18 rebounds over the two games. The first game back after the

Thanksgiving break was on the road at Cortland where Oneonta came home with a 57-52 win. Sea-brook led the way again with 10 points, seven re-bounds, four assists and four steals. Oneonta ended the first part of the season with a weekend split at home against Buffalo State and Fredonia. The Red Dragons were defeated by Buffalo State 48-42 on Fri-day and bounced back the next day with a 52-39 win against the Blue Devils. 2002 ended and 2003 began in Florida with a pair of losses to St. Leo University, 64-44, and to Eckerd College 77-57. The Red Dragons would lose a third straight game at Skidmore 65-56 before win-ning three straight against SUNYIT, Oswego and

record time of 23.49 while Verteramo was fifth in the 400-meter dash in a school-record time of 52.49. On the womenʼs side, they accumulated 23 points and finished seventh in the team standings. The women were led by the trio of juniors Kelly Stevens (Rochester, NY) and Rose Velan (Stamford, NY) and sophomore Ashlee Robertson (Mechan-icville, NY). All three earned SUNYAC medals in their individ-ual events as well as earning a medal in the 4x400 relay event. Robertson earned two individual medals after finishing fifth in the 400 in a time of 1:00.68 and sixth in the 200 with a time of 26.71. Velan placed third in the 500-meter run in a time of 1:20.80 to earn her individual medal. Stevens earned her medal in the 1,000-meter run with a third place finish in a time of 3:01.42. This trio then added freshman Erin Putnam (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) to run a time of 4:11.41 in the 1,600 relay. The next championship meet was the ECAC meet where the men competed in two relays, but were unable to score any points. The women had four individuals compete while also competing in two relays where they scored two points and finished tied for 48th overall in the final team standings. On Friday night, the distance medley relay team of Velan, Stevens, Robertson and Macri placed 7th out of 21 teams with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 12:18.51. The impressive part is that they did it in their first year of NCAA competition. Velan led off the relay in the 1,200 meter leg with a split of 3:50.7 and then handed to Robertson, who blasted her 400 meter leg in 58.4 seconds. Next was Macri, who ran her 800 split in 2:23.6 and handed to Stevens, who ran an outstanding 5:05.5 1,600 meter split to finish, moving the team from 10th to 7th. The men ran the 4x200 meter relay on Friday and placed 17th overall. Mazzarisi, Verteramo, White and Smith made up the squad which also ran the 1,600 relay the next day and placed second in their heat and 11th overall. In their individual events on Saturday, Robertson placed 13th in the 400 meters, Velan and Macri placed 9th and 11th re-spectively in the 500 meters while Stevens broke another school record in the 800 meters in placing 15th overall. The quartet finished the day with a win in their heat of the 1,600 meter relay that put them 13th overall.

New Paltz to bring its record to 7-4 overall entering the final week of January. The end of January and the beginning of February saw Oneonta drop five of six games to fall below the .500 mark at 8-9. The stretch included a loss at Plattsburgh, a victory over Potsdam and four straight losses at Mt. St. Mary, Brockport, Geneseo and Ithaca. Oneonta snapped its los-ing streak with a 67-52 win versus Castleton State where Davey led the way with 12 points. The final three weeks of the season Oneonta went 4-4 including a loss at Brockport in the quarter-finals of the SUNYAC tournament. Seabrook scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but it wasnʼt enough to overcome the Golden Eagles. The women did receive a surprise on Monday, Mar. 3 when the got notice that they were selected to participate in the ECAC Upstate New York Tourna-ment. Their opening round opponent was the 22-4 Union Dutchwomen and the game was in Schenect-ady. The Red Dragons played an inspired game and hung in the entire 40 minutes and gave themselves an opportunity to win the game, which they did 68-66. A basket by freshman Melissa Donohue (Niverville, NY) with seven seconds remaining was the winner for Oneonta. The season for the Red Dragons came to an end three days later with a 79-65 loss in the ECAC semifinals to Rensselaer. Davey was the leader in her final collegiate game with 13 points.

Men’s Basketball

The 2002-03 menʼs basketball season can be described as streaky. The team kept going back and forth between winning and losing streaks where they ended the season losing its final three games including on the road at Oswego in the SUNYAC Tournament quarterfinals. The season opened at home with the Holiday Inn Tip-Off Classic where the Red Dragons won the consolation game to finish third. In the season opener Oneonta went into overtime with Hartwick before falling 96-93. Juniors Kurt Troyer (Albany, NY) and Shabron Bridges (Bronx, NY) led Oneonta with 30 points and 26 points respectively. In the consolation game it was Troyer who led the way with 23 points in a 79-63 win over SUNY Purchase. After a 65-60 road win at Cortland to open the SUNYAC schedule, Oneonta dropped five straight that carried into Janu-ary. Troyer and classmate Lesohn Reagans (New York, NY) each scored 17 points in a 65-59 victory at SUNY Farmingdale to snap the streak on Jan. 10. The Red Dragons good fortunes wouldnʼt last long as they dropped its next game 75-62 at SUNYIT to put their record at 3-7 overall. The streaks would begin with three straight wins over Oswego, New Paltz and Plattsburgh, but would go the other way with three straight losses to end the month of January with a record of 6-10. In two of the three wins Troyer would score

28 points while in the third win sophomore Anthony Negreanu (Woodside, NY) came off the bench to lead Oneonta with 18 points. Oneonta rebounded with four straight wins to begin the final month and even its record at 10-10 overall and 7-5 in con-ference play with two weeks left in the regular season. Troyer had back-to-back 25-point games in the first two wins and had 17 points in the fourth win, which happened to be a 62-53 vic-tory against Cortland. Bridges scored a season-high 27 points in a 90-88 overtime win on the road versus New Paltz. Over the final two weeks Oneonta lost four of its five remaining games and finished in seventh place in the SUNYAC. The lone win for Oneonta was a 79-69 victory over Brockport that, at the time, kept Oneonta in the hunt for a possible home game in the opening round of the SUNYAC Tournament. Un-fortunately the final two losses of the regular season dropped the Red Dragons down to seventh place and a date with Oswego. In the quarterfinals Oneonta ran into a red-hot shooting Lakers team that hit 16 of 25 three-point shots en route to a 90-72 win that would end the season for the Red Dragons.

Athletics Department Receives Community Service Award

Wrestlers Cited for Pit Run Involvement

For a second straight year, the Oneonta State athletics depart-ment was recognized for its outstanding community service when it received one of three National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators/Jostens Community Service Awards. The plaque was presented to SUCO sports administrators during the NCAA convention in Anaheim, Calif. this past January. The main reason for the honor centered around the wrestling teams involvement during the last seven years in Oneontaʼs annual Pit Run. “This award reflects on everybodyʼs efforts,” said Steve Garner, who traveled with Associate Athletic Director Tracy Ranieri to accept the award. “Itʼs so important that these students recognize the importance of service. Theyʼre here for a lot more than competition out on the field or out on the court.” For the last seven years, the SUCO wrestlers, under the direc-tion of coach Al Sosa, have entered the Pit Run - a 10K road race named after Ricky “Pit” Parisian, an Oneonta native and state trooper killed in 1994 while attempting to stop an armed robbery at a local supermarket. The wrestlers have raised between $514 and $1,700 over the years by soliciting sponsorship for their participation in the event. “Thereʼs a degree of expectancy and pride in their involve-ment in this event,” Sosa said. Sosa also noted that his teamʼs $1,705 contribution to the 2002 Pit Runʼs scholarship fund earned them a place on the event ban-ner that flies over the starting line, listing financial supporters. Laura Moan, the athletics department coordinator for Chal-lenging Athletes ̓Minds for Personal Success program, let the students who should be nominated for the award. The Student Athlete Advisory Council selected the wrestling teamʼs community service contribution.“It was student-driven,” she said, “and that makes getting the award that much nicer.”

RYAN RUMMERY RECEIVES NCAA POST GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

Senior becomes Third Athlete to Receive Prestigious Honor

ONEONTA, N.Y.-Oneonta State senior menʼs soccer player Ryan Rummery (Biggin Hill, England) was awarded a Postgradu-ate Scholarship from the National Collegiate Athletic Association for his outstanding achievements on the field and in the classroom. Rummery was one of 29 men to be so honored from the past fall sports season and is now eligible to use the $6,900 award towards his con-tinuing education after graduation from Oneonta. Rummery started all 17 games that he played in last fall and finished as the teamʼs leading scor-

er with five goals and one assist. He was a three-time Regional All-American and two-time Atlantic Soccer Conference All-Star including being a First Team selection in 2002. He finishes his four-year career with 68 starts in 68 games played with 28 goals and 17 assists for 73 points. Rummery had 10 game-winning goals during his career and led the team in scoring in three of his four years with Oneonta. He was a two-year captain for the Red Dragons and helped lead the program to three winning seasons. Academically, Rummery has been on the SUNYAC Commissionerʼs List and All-Academic Teams throughout his four years while being inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, which is the National Student Honor Society, as a junior. He was also selected by the College Sports Information Director of America as an Academic All-District 1 Second Team performer in the fall of 2001. The NCAA awards a total of 174 postgraduate scholar-ships in the fall, winter and spring in the sports for which the NCAA conducts championships. For a student-athlete to qualify, they must have an overall grade-point average of 3.2 and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to thee student-athlete, the institu-tion and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete must also intend to continue work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student. Rummery becomes the third Oneonta State student, and the second student-athlete in the last 10 years to receive this prestigious scholarship. The first recipient was Kathleen OʼReilly who worked in the training room as an undergradu-ate. The most recent honoree was Paula Polce who received her award in 2001 for her outstanding career as a basketball student-athlete.

Wrestling Duo Earn Academic Accolades

ONEONTA, N.Y.--Oneonta State wrestling brothers, Greg and Dustin Winn of Bainbridge, N.Y. earned honors as wrestling Schol-ar All-Americans by the NCAA Div. III Wrestling Coaches Association. This is the third consecutive year that Greg has been honored and the

first year that Dustin was honored. Greg becomes the second wrestler in the history of the program to receive the academic honor three times. The only other Oneonta wrestler to achieve this is Da-vid Regina who was honored in 1989, 1990 and 1991. He finished the season with an overall record of 24-12 and a team-best six pins. He was a place-winner at three invitationals and an All-New York State wrestler this season with his best finish being third at both the Monarch Invita-tional and the Petrofes Tournament.

Dustin competed at the NCAA Div. III tour-nament at Ohio Northern during the second weekend of March. He won his opening round match before dropping his next two in the consolation bracket, which ended his season. Dustin was a place-winner in every invitational this season with his culminat-ing honor was winning the ECWC champion at 149 lbs. that earned him his automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. He finished the season with a record of 30-8 with five pins. To be eligible for selection as a Scholar All-American, a wrestler must achieve a 3.2 GPA and have been a place-winner at the national qualifying tournament while wrestling in half of the team s̓ scheduled matches or have a winning percentage of 67% or better in at least 2/3 of the scheduled teamʼs matches.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving

The 2002-03 editions of the menʼs and womenʼs swimming & diving teams looked familiar with many returning athletes to both squads as preseason began in September. Newcomers for each, especially on the womenʼs side, enabled both teams to compete with a depth that they hadnʼt had in previous years. By the time the season was over both teams were able to challenge for the upper half of the conference with a great week at the SUNYAC championship meet. The dual-meet season began the first Saturday in No-vember at New Paltz with a loss for each team. The men were defeated 110-77 while the women lost 114-84. Freshman Sarah Millspaugh (Pine Bush, NY) was a double winner for the women in the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle events. The lone winner for the men was senior Matthew Hunter (Baldwin, NY) who took first place in the 50-yard freestyle. The rest of the opening month saw both teams com-pete at the Oswego Relays and the North Country Invitational with a dual meet against Plattsburgh stuck in between the two bigger meets. At Oswego the men were third overall while the women finished fifth. The men fell to 0-2 with a 122-72 loss at Plattsburgh while the women evened its record at 1-1 with a 121-79 victory over the Cardinals. At the North Country Invitational the women finished second overall with 393 points and the men placed fourth overall with 281 points. Millspaugh led the women once again at North Country with a pair of wins in the 500 and 1,650-yard freestyle events. Sophomore Jen Krebs (Greensboro, NC) also won an individual event as she took first place in the 100-yard freestyle. The top overall finisher on the menʼs side at North Country was junior Michael Reineke (Campbell Hall, NY). Reinekeʼs 206.10 points was good enough for second place in the 1-meter diving event. The two teams ended the first part of the season with

home losses to Utica College. Hunter was a winner in the 100 freestyle while senior Brian Jackson (Rochester, NY) won the 1-meter diving. Krebs won two events to lead the women on the day. The men came out of the break first with a seventh place finish at the Kumpf In-vitational hosted by Rensselaer. Hunter was the top overall finisher for the Red Dragons with a third place finish in the 50 freestyle. The first dual meets for both teams off the break were at home as both teams swept Skidmore and St. Rose. Sophomore

Bill Dergosits (Schenectady, NY) led the men with four individ-ual wins and two second place finishes. Krebs won three events against Skidmore while Millspaugh and senior Tristen Weaver (Ithaca, NY) each won a pair of events against St. Rose. The men registered one more dual-meet win prior to the SUNYAC championship meet to finish 3-6. The women went 2-2 the rest of the way to complete a winning season at 5-4. At the SUNYAC championship meet the Red Dragons brought home medals on both sides. The women scored 212 points and finished sixth while the men came in seventh with 204 points. Millspaugh led the women with six total medals from two individual events and four relays. The men brought home two medals in the 400-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.

Wrestling Season Summary

The 2002-03 wrestling team put together its second straight winning campaign this past winter. They continued to build on last yearʼs success that saw a nucleus of young, talented grap-plers perform well all season long. This year was no different as a few newcomers contributed to the lineup and impacted the teamʼs overall success. The season opened at the Monarch Invitational hosted by Kingʼs College and the Red Dragons came away with a second place finish out of 12 competing squads. Oneonta had seven placewinners led by the sophomore duo of Dustin Winn (Bainbridge, NY) and Rory Tobias (Binghamton, NY) who each took second place at 149 lbs. and 141 lbs. respec-tively. The next highest placewinner for Oneonta was Dustinʼs older brother, Greg, who was third at 125 lbs. The second weekend of the season was the Oneonta Red Dragon Invitational in which the team took third place overall out of 10 competing teams. Dustin Winn recorded another second place finish along with freshman Kyle Hauptfleisch (Franklin, NY) who was second at 165 lbs. Senior Blaire Surgent (St. Leonard, MD) was the next highest placewinner for Oneonta with a third place finish at 157 lbs. At the final Invitational of the season, the Red Dragons registered a third place finish at the Petrofes Tournament hosted by Messiah College. Oneonta came home with eight placewin-ners led by Hauptfleisch who was second at 1665 lbs. Both Greg and Dustin recorded third place finishes at 125 lbs. and 149 lbs. respectively while freshman Mike Briesemeister (Massapequa, NY) and sophomore Billy Cooper (Walton, NY) were fourth at 174 lbs. and 197 lbs. respectively. The dual meet season began in early January with the annual winter trip that took the team south to Pennsylvania. An opening loss to York College 21-12 was followed the next day with a 24-11 win against Ursinus College. The week on the road ended at Wilkes University for a tri-match that included Rhode Island College and New York University. The Red Dragons went 2-1 on the day with victories over RIC 28-9 and NYU 31-10 with the setback coming to the hosts 22-21. The middle weekend in February brought the Red Dragons to Buffalo for the New York State Collegiate Wres-tling Championships where they finished ninth out of 18 teams. Hauptfleisch was the top individual placewinner for Oneonta taking third at 165 lbs. while the Winn brothers both finished fifth in their respective weight classes and sophomore Nick Cas-tellano (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) was sixth at 184 lbs. The Red Dragons began the final month of the dual-meet season with a pair of wins on the road at RIT and Oswego. Oneonta won four of its final six dual meets including wins against Williams and Wesleyan to finish 9-5. At the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Tourna-ment the Red Dragons finished fifth overall and took home three All-Conference honors. Dustin Winn was the champion at 149 lbs. and earned automatic qualification to the NCAA Div. III Championship. He defeated the No. 1 wrestlers in Div. III at the time in the championship match 5-4, which also earned him the Most Outstanding Wrestler award for the tournament. Castel-lano (3rd) and Hauptfleisch (4th) were Oneontaʼs other All-Con-ference wrestlers.

ED O’MALLEY NAMED MEN’S TENNIS COACHAssumes Responsibility over Program after Retirement of Jim Baker

Oneonta State womenʼs tennis coach, Ed OʼMalley, was given the nod to serve as the menʼs tennis coach for the upcoming spring season. OʼMalley

inherits the highly successful program from long-time coach Jim Baker who retired in December. “We certainly thank Jim for the nearly 20 years of service in developing our menʼs tennis program to where it is one of the best in the Northeast,” said Athletics Director Steve Garner. “The student-athletes that have come through the program during his tenure have been outstanding, which reflected on Jimʼs ability to recruit and attract top students to our campus. He gave them all the opportunity to be a part of something special academically and athletically.” Baker began coaching the menʼs team in the fall of 1985 taking over for Ed Kassler who had guided the program since the 1960ʼs. In his first season he led

the program to a SUNYAC title and never looked back. During his 17+ seasons, Baker guided the menʼs team to 258 wins and an overall winning percentage of .748 along with multiple finishes in the top 10 at the ECAC Northeast Regional Championships. OʼMalley completed his fourth season as the head coach of the womenʼs team this past fall. He has recorded four consecutive winning seasons with the women including a 10-3 record last fall and has received a berth to the NYSWCAA Tournament the last three years. In 2000 he guided the womenʼs team to a school-record 12 wins and a second place finish at the SUNYAC Championships. His outstanding coaching performance that year earned him Coach of the Year honors in the conference and by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) as the Male College Coach of the Year for the West-ern Region of New York State.

MUJANOVIC SELECTED AS AN ALL AMERICANJunior Becomes Third Player to Earn Honor

This past fall the Oneonta State womenʼs soccer program received its third All-America selection when the National Soccer Coaches Associa-tion of America (NSCAA) selected junior Sanada Mujanovic (Centereach, NY) to the Div. III Third Team. Mujanovic, who was a co-captain last season, becomes the third womenʼs player in three years to earn national recognition for her outstanding play in leading the Red Dragons. The accolade for Mujanovic was the cul-minating honor from the fall that included being a First Team Regional All-American, an All-New York State and an All-SUNYAC

First Team player. She finished the season as the teamʼs second-leading scorer with 11 goals and five assists for 27 points. She started 23 games and registered a team-best six game-winning goals in leading the Red Dragons to their fourth straight conference title and fourth consecutive NCAA berth. After three seasons with Oneonta she has started 55 of 64 games played and has 23 goals and 13 assists for 59 points which places her third all-time on the career points list.
