His winning time of 21.86 in the 200m was good enough to set a facility record as well. Bernstein was also the leadoff leg for the winning 4x400m relay foursome that concluded the meet. Bernstein was joined by a trio of freshmen in Joe Carr (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Thomas Wheeler (Rocky Point/Rocky Point) and Micah Patterson (Plattsburgh/Saranac). Matt LoPiccolo selected as Atlantic Region Coach of the Year

The USTFCCCA selected SUNY Oneonta track & field coach, Matt LoPiccolo, as the NCAA Division III Atlantic Region Men’s Head Coach of the Year. The award for LoPiccolo followed his Coach of the Year award from the SUNYAC after directing the men’s squad to its first indoor conference title in its history.

At the SUNYAC championships, the men garnered six individual conference titles and one relay title while collecting 153 points. LoPiccolo also had two athletes compete at the NCAA Division III championships hosted by

North Central College in Naperville, Ill.

This is the third time in LoPiccolo’s career that he has been honored as the Region’s top coach. He previously was honored in 2005 for women’s outdoor and 2006 for women’s indoor.

LoPiccolo is in his 13th year as a coach within the cross country and track & field programs at Oneonta. He was the head coach of both programs for his first six years before taking over as the head cross country coach while serving as the associate track & field coach until 2010-11 when he assumed the duties as head coach of track & field with the hiring of the current cross country coach, Angelo Posillico.

LoPiccolo currently serves on the NCAA Division III Track & Field Executive Committee as the Atlantic Region Representative. He has coached 36 All-Americans, which include three national champions. The program, which began as an NCAA recognized program in 2003, also eclipsed 100 SUNYAC champions this winter and currently stands at 107.

LoPiccolo has served as the meet director for three SUNYAC outdoor track & field championships, the ECAC outdoor championship in 2007 and the conference cross country championship in 2003. In 2010, he was co-meet director of the highly successful NCAA Atlantic Region Cross Country Championships held in Oneonta at Fortin Park. Prior, he served on the NCAA Division III Cross Country Executive Committee as the Atlantic Region Women’s Representative from 2009-2011.

Those eight play-ers were Stephanie Fiske, Jessica Hodes, Kristen Jerauld, Ashley Johnson, Kathleen Schlegel, Samantha Smith, Emma Wasser-man and Suzanne Wright.

The women’s soccer team was honored for the first time by the NSCAA for it’s academic accomplishments as a team. Oneonta was one of 497 women’s teams to be recognized across all divi-sions for having a minimum GPA of 3.00 or better as a team in the classroom. The NSCAA began recognizing teams for their accomplishments in 1996.

The women’s swimming & diving team was honored by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America as a Scholar All-America Team for the Fall semester, 2012. It was the third time in the last four years that the squad has attained the mini-mum 3.0 GPA required to be selected. The Team had an overall GPA of 3.05 for the Fall semester.

SUNY Oneonta Athletics hosts Kids in Sports Day SUNY Oneonta student athletes, representing men’s and women’s soccer, women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, and field hockey, hosted local children ages 4-13 for “Kids in Sports Day”. Male and female student athletes were able to engage young boys and girls in activities while continuing to build bonds. “I am proud of our coaches and student athletes who gave great energy and passion to this event,” said Ath-letics Director Tracey Ranieri. “It is a testament to the community spirit at SUNY Oneonta and we look for-ward to watching this event grow each year.” The student athletes of SUNY Oneonta enjoy every opportunity to mentor young, aspiring athletes. It was

another opportunity where they could give back in the same way that someone gave of their time to help them when they were younger. The children who participated in this free event were treated to loads of fun and skill learning as each team spent time teaching the skills of their specific sport.
